I think I'll just let this one lie here like a rotting corpse lest folks get the impression that AIG carries all the blame. I personally don't see the reason for such an uproar over 165 million when we've pumped 170 billion into the company, but why let a good uproar go to waste?

Let me know when the pitchfork and torch division is mounted up. Someone bring one of those magic 8 ball things too. I don't think we'll get more straight answers out of it during the witch hunt, but at least we know it's a game and not complete bullshit. In case you're not sure what BS is, it is when a politician has his mouth open. Chris Dodd first denied, now admits, and waves a vague hand towards administration officials.

So who knew what and when? And how much bs are you being fed?

No point in quibbling in only $165 million...after all, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) once said "Why quibble over $200 million?"

Now, I think the whole AIG mess is, well, a mess.  I feel they should have been forced to seek protection under Chapter 11 and reorganized.

A simple example:  You give a guy $100 to buy food for his family.  He does and has 9 cents left.  He gives that to his kids.   Do you ask for the 9 cents back?

Of course, $200 million of $700 billion is less than a penny of that $100....

I've given up HOPE on actual CHANGE in D.C.  Different day; different scum.

That's actually kind of sad that we've gotten to the point that $165 million is regarded as something not to be troubled about.

Everything about it is sad. Having said that, I've felt since day one that the bitching and moaning over this money is more of a distraction than real anger when talking about the men and women in DC. I can almost see the glee bouncing around at such a perfect stage opportunity to appear to be at least somewhat accountable with your tax dollar and with the economy by coming down hard on what clearly offends anyone with a brain. After all, if you can focus the anger on the quibble part, you not only avoid the non-quibble monies (I thought it was Barney Frank who uttered the infamous quibble remark, but if it was Chuck Schumer, so be it), but you can also let your righteous indignation flow in synch with voters while still bending them over for a good old fashioned fuck. One of those migitgating factors that let you keep them looking the other way while you took part in the real economic rape.

It seemed a slip of idiotic porportions to not tie at least some provisions onto billions of dollars in bailout money. Even with my disdain of political types, I never suspected the language was purposely removed. Call me naive. I thought it just one more example of the complete lack of oversight Capitol hill has been evidencing over tax dollars for years now.

Silly me.

One more thing that gets my temper and then I'll let it be. The article read something like "didn't name sources." I'm quite sure he didn't. What it should have read was, refused to name sources. I cannot imagine a reporter passing up on asking the question everyone would want to know in regards to an issue that has so many of the voting public ready to tar and feather Washington.

I bet war rooms in the respective parties have been up all night with one side trying to figure out a way to deflect this thing, and the other trying to come up with ways to exploit it.

In all the flap and flail, ain't no one really giving a shit about you or your money. Damn I despise politicians.

Well, it's still less then the 12 Billion that went missing in Iraq.

From what I watched yesterday the Feds knew about this in Dec, so what's his name (Guiltner) has some explaining to do, sure he was not in charge then, but you think they would have told him when he took over, plus he was in NYC when all this was taking place.

As for Dodd, I think the next election will take care of him, I wonder who else pushed to have the Snow Amenment taken out....

OVERSITE??????? What oversite? Bush et al; just wanted the bailout, no oversites, just give em the money........Now we have a 'Stimulus PLan'...tax credits to the masses if they purchase a house or a car.....please; why not just give everyone a lump chunk of change...I'm sure you would be more than happy to receive half a mill; I know I would.
They got Billions for failing...then bonuses for doing a great job managing failure. I dunno.....I just don't gety it.

You are dead on Sir.....why didn't anyone of those great, knowlegeable, political media experts raise conforntation starting with the Florida escapade, to the Iraq war.....to the Bailout. Now, they are all knowlegeable in the economy but before,... Bush reigned ....as dictator, and the media just went along.

More and more I am coming to the conclusion that type of action is the only type that will effect positive change. :( 

Elected officials seem to be unresponsive to the citizens.

My local school district "lost"  2 million a few years ago. Never found it and no one seems to be looking. Its everywhere, in all areas of government. We are so screwed. :)

There are several aspects.

One is that there is a very strong sense that the average American, with a household income of $35K, is being asked to subsidize suits with six figure incomes.  Another is the very concept of a bonus, which should be given to top performers when their companies are doing well, not greedy incompetents who have flushed their companies down the toilet.

Keep in mind also the tremendous public opposition to the bailouts, which were claimed to be necessary by a bunch of idiots that don;t understand how the economy works.  And the fact that the provision to limit bonuses got stripped in a closed door session that nobody knows about.  Very bad timing for an Administration that pledged openness.

Well, Vanessa, we don't have to be.

If enough of the citizenry would become informed and grow something that resembles a spine it is possible to turn things around.

I have not, however, seen much in the past several years that  indicates the citizenry is "waking up."

Right, which is why I'm distressed when people like DomKen in another thread say -

"It sure doesn't mean anything. Foreign aid in the US budget is closer to 20 billion than it is 100 billion. last year if was approx 0.16% of the US budget."

.16% or not...20 billion is still a lot bigger than $165 million.

Not a challenge, but simply a question:

Are the people getting the bonuses the same people who set up the derivative schemes of packaging bad mortgages that basically caused much of the problem?

In other words ... are we blaming the right people?

When it was 1% of the budget that was found to be pork, then 1% was nothing, when it's 1/10th of a percent, That's a (3) 0 difference not 2 so it's a tenth of 1%, in the bailout then it's real abuse?
