• NBC boss says Jon Stewart's criticism is absurd and unfair

NEW YORK (Reuters) – NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker fired back at comedian Jon Stewart on Wednesday, saying it was "unfair" and "absurd" for the funnyman to criticize CNBC and question its coverage of financial news.

"Everybody wants to find a scapegoat. That's human nature," Zucker said during a keynote address at a media industry conference. "But to suggest that the business media or CNBC was responsible for what is going on now is absurd." ...................................................

Stewart has blasted CNBC's reporting of the financial market meltdown, saying the channel was too cozy with corporate chiefs and key government officials.

The comedian has lobbed particularly harsh criticism at CNBC commentator Jim Cramer, and last week invited him for an appearance on the comedy show, where he hammered the guest for his coverage of Wall Street.

"Listen, you knew what the banks were doing, yet were touting it for months and months," Stewart said during his March 12 show. "The entire network was. Now to pretend that this was some sort of crazy, once-in-a-lifetime tsunami that nobody could have seen coming is disingenuous at best and criminal at worst."

"TERRIFIC" JOB

Zucker, speaking at the McGraw-Hill Media Summit in New York on Wednesday, said that CNBC's reporters and commentators had done a "terrific" job and the network remained a "go-to" place for financial news.

Yeah, ok.

A terrific job.

Anyone watch the Daily Show when they documented all the bad advice including Cramer's enthusiastic endorsement of Bear-Stearns, right before they collapsed?

"Heck of a job, Brownie."

(And Stewart never said that CNBC was the root cause of the problems... but he did accuse it as being a symptom of a much larger problem. CNBC is just the public face of that problem: unregulated, greedy investment firms.)

CNBC economy programs are exactly like J. Stewart describes. Jim Cramer runs basically Wall Street infomercial. Wall Street gurus always tell: "It is good time to buy stocks" whatever the real situation. Despite these problems, one can still learn a lot from these programs by using their own critical thinking and keeping "crap detector" running. So, I do not think Stewart has anything to regret or apologize.

It amazes me the credit that people give others by answering....The Democrats give Limbaugh credence by even discussing him and the NBC people give more credence with each mention of John Stewart. For people it can somewhat be assumed have some sort of brains they display otherwise often!

I don't know if you saw the Daily Shows in question, but they really slammed CNBC.

I think there had to be an answer, considering that their credibility is on the line.

I am well aware of the show in question....if he hadn't addressed it the furor would subside....why feed the fire?....

rulemylife -> RE: NBC boss: Jon Stewart's criticism absurd, unfair (3/18/2009 2:26:05 PM)

By that same logic, Cramer should never have appeared on the show.

And this whole thing started with Santelli's ignorant comments about subsidizing losers who couldn't pay their mortgages while being cheered on by the beneficiaries of those being subsidized by the Wall Street bailout.

I know....and have no argument.....just an opinion on the thinking of some who need better advice....

One of Stewart's consistent points about TV NEWS and reporting is that its sourced (controlled by the White House, Wall St. etc.) and its slanted towards being entertaining and uncritical. Investigative, critical, and in depth reporting is largely absent from the TV airwaves. (Despite the 24 HR news cycle.)

According to Stewart, both Jim Cramer and the financial reporting industry should have done a better job.

Stewart's position is hardly unfair or absurd, but what is surreal is how these observations only seem to be made on comedy central. That's what's bizarre about the American newscape.

Maybe Zucker should come on the Daily Show and get schooled too.

Go Stewart!

What's even more bizarre is that they didn't see this coming 25 years ago, when Comedy Central and CNBC didn't even exist.  Doesn't anyone remember all the "America is better off" BS that was so pervasive in the elections of 1984, '86, and '88?  Even though there were huge deficits and an official government policy of borrow-and-spend (not to mention outsourcing and the diminishing of our manufacturing and industrial base).  Why pick on CNBC when there's enough blame to go around for all the media, particularly the major broadcast networks who were sitting on their hands throughout the past few decades?  ABC, CBS, and NBC are more to blame than CNBC (or even Fox News for that matter).  Those networks should have done a better job warning against fiscal irresponsibility, privatization, and deregulation way back in the 1980s, but they did NOTHING!  Nothing, except make Reagan the Teflon President where he could do no wrong in the eyes of the media.  Any criticisms of the Administration's fiscal irresponsibility or recklessness were met with cries of "Traitor" and "Communist" and "go live in the USSR if you don't like the free market."  It's as if large segments of the population were in some sort of trance, with their minds controlled by the Cult of Ronald Reagan.  That's why they were often called "Ronnie Robots" in those days, because they acted as if they had no free will whatsoever.

I also saw shades of that during the Clinton Presidency, as he also had a devout following which thought he could do no wrong (even though his economic policies were not much different from Reaganomics).  Clinton was a Democrat in name only, as his economic policies and his support of NAFTA were more Republican-oriented than anything else.  Clinton shamelessly flexed the Democratic Party muscle against any wayward blue-collar Democrats who were against NAFTA.

As for Jon Stewart, why doesn't he put his own boss, Sumner Redstone, on the hot seat?  He's a much bigger shark and far more influential than anyone over at CNBC.

CNBC does not cover the financial situation well.  They are in bed with government and big business.  Just listen to what they say...
