Animal House meets Mayberry

MONTAGUE, Texas (AP) - For months, perhaps longer, the Montague County Jail was "Animal House" meets Mayberry. Inside the small brick building across from the courthouse, inmates had the run of the place, having sex with their jailer girlfriends, bringing in recliners, taking drugs and chatting on cell phones supplied by friends or guards, according to authorities.

The story indicates that the doors to two of the groups of cells didn't even lock. Interestingly, though, it appears nobody ever tried to escape!

Yes Sheriff Joe!! He makes prison exactly what it should be. A very undesirable place to be. Prison is supposed to be a punishment, not a vacation at taxpayers expense.

Joe ROCKS!! Which is also the reason he's been re-elected so many times.

I'd have to agree. With all the negligent deaths that happen at that prison... as well as that shitty prostitution sting that was under his guidance, I don't think he should have ever  been reelected.

Sheriff Joe is a con himself.

Bring in a con-man to run a jail?  That makes no sense.

Maybe he escaped conviction, but he's as innocent as O.J.

Sheriff Joe is a disgrace. He is a sadistic asshole who should be incarcerated himself for violating numerous rights of people. Last I checked, there was still this thing called "innocent until proven guilty" (even though Bush tried like hell to do away with that).
No one is saying jail should be a country club, but most prisons and his type especially have a rate of recidivism which means nothing is solved, it costs tax payers a fortune, the cycle perpetuates itself and on and on and on. Its pathetic.

It's not a prison, it's a county jail.  County jails are mostly filled up with people who couldn't afford to bond out.  So, they're innocent people.  We have a presumption of innocence in this country.  The people that are actually convicted and doing time in a county jail are either waiting to go to prison, have committed some low-level crime that only required less than a year, or they couldn't afford to pay a fine.

Joe Arpaio is a complete asshole.  He harrasses journalists with his deputies (it's well documented).  He has had his deputies harrass opposition politicians, including those that dared to run against him.  His little crew of macho asshole deputies raided a house and burned it down with tear gas canisters.  While it was burning down, a little dog was trapped inside, and they refused to allow the homeowner to get it.  Guess what?  It was the wrong fucking house.

Fuck Joe Arpaio.  I had a friend that did a few months in there for a low-level, white collar crime.  I have nothing but contempt for him.  If any law enforcement official deserves to be called a pig, it's him.

That Sheriff is a turd of the most astronomical proportions - a certifiable deviant. I bet you he creams himself at the mistreatments he imposes on the prisonners. Surprising it's actually legal, really.

Considering the eloquence of the last few posts, what more can I add to the subject.Joe the sheriff is indeed an asshole, hopefully one whose 15 mins. is about up.

I have a little problem with the concepts of electing sheriffs (,and district attorneys, and judges). Should those people not be professionals, who do a job to serve justice? I don't feel that having to be popular to get re- elected helps with that.

But as I am not living in the US, I might very well be overlooking something. Can somebody explain the system and its merits to me?

I'd rather an elected Sheriff than an appointed one. He/she is the most powerful individual in the county, hands down.

A Sheriff in Wyoming a few years back stood on his hind legs and protected his constituents by barring Federal law enforcement from abusing citizens in his county. A Sheriff, or deputies, can arrest a Judge that is not acting in accordance with the law, or ruling contrary to facts and law.

Being elected by the people he/she is representing is I think a better way than appointment.

As for the presumption of innocent until proven guilty...  That sounds nice, and warm and fuzzy but it doesn't work that in practice. The bias, disadvantage and disability imposed on anyone charged with a crime/violation quickly overcomes that sentiment.

And the election of sheriffs sounds all warm and fuzzy too, until you see how far an arsewipe like Arpaio went just by riding the wave of populist bullshit.
