Hiya, am wondering if anyone from you has experience with cats pulling out their fur? I am currently visiting my parents and one of their cats has quite a few blank patches on her body where the fur is missing. So I am "guessing" she pulled them out herself...on the other hand I took off her collar last night as she is incredible blank there as well (non of my cats was ever so blank due to hair loss at the area of the collar), so it might not just be related to pulling hair out by herself...has anyone experience of cats and such hairloss? I already asked typical questions e.g. if something might cause her stress, or if the food changed in case she doesn't get on with new food, but thats not the case...my parents are on holiday now (so I am their cat-sitter lol) and it's likely that my mum will go to the vet now once she is back. Any experiences, ideas or advice?

Good idea to take the kitty to a vet. Could be as simple as diet, and as complex as disease entity. I have a cat that has lost all her hair around her surgical site from being spayed. The vet has run every test known, we have swapped diets, tried cremes and steroids and nothing shows up. She just has a bald little belly. Healthy as a horse. Hope the same is true for you. mbmbn

Well, my mother just called now from her holiday destination and we agreed that I might go to the vet with her next week (as I simply know that my mum does take much more time with it at times), just have to clarify that this visit will be paid via a bill by her when she is back and not by myself on that day of that visit as I am burned out at present (waiting desperately for my student money in april...) despite that I have my own 3 furrys in UK which cost me a fortune at times lol

Hello Phoenixpower, Taking the kitty to the vet is the best move. Common causes include allergies to fleas or something else in the environment and pulling hair out due to nervousness or anxiety. Of course dietary deficiencies or various diseases could also be a cause.

yeah take the kitteh to the vet. My cat decided one day to pull her belly fur out from around her private areas, and naturally I was concerned and rushed her to the vet. In her case, it was a kitty Brazilian, since she doesn't have thumbs and scissors and such, but any other weird place or random reason can mean any number of things. Do you have mites/fleas in the area? Does kitteh get brushed regulualry? But yeah take kitteh to the vet.

My sisters cat has a bare belly. He has OCD licking his belly. She has seen the vet about it, changed diets in case it was food allergies, the cats have never seen a flea in their life. The vet decided it was probably just from nervous habits. Im not talking about just a patch here or there, if his tongue can reach any part of his belly you can bet its not got hair on it. He has had this habit for year and years and the only thing my sister can do is get him to stop when she sees him doing it. He only does this to his belly hair and has no other areas where he does this. I would still get this confirmed by the vet, since it is also coming out where he cant lick like under the collar.

Is the collar a chemical flea collar? Could be an allergy to the chemicals in that; such things can be pretty toxic. Best wishes, Davan

Wow thanks to your views, highly appreciated and thanks for the link Kirata, I never thought that there can be so many causes for loosing their fur...with this cat its just a bit weird as she looks like as if she pulled out her fur by herself on her tail and on her upper thighs from the back legs (so again in the area from her tail) but last night I realised then that her fur on the side of her tummy is thinner as well on some parts and underneath the collar as I already mentioned...so I will call the vet tomorrow and try to arrange an appointment...only have to clarify the payment method, but that should fine. The link from Kirata reminded me on one of my cats in UK where one of my boys came once home and a big chunk of fur was missing behind his ear...there obviously his enemy (a black cat which all my 3 cats dislike severely) pulled out a huge chunk of his hair behind his ear and I grounded him for 3-4 days until the open wound was healed a fair bit again...but there at least it was kind of clear why fur was missing and he is now fine again, whereas with her its not clear at all.

my two older lady cats are very sensitive to certain things in their food, we haven't quite narrowed it down yet, but they can eat meow mix of all things without hair loss and vomiting. everything else seems to cause them to scratch constantly and toss up all over the house. PM

You can get tranquilizers for nervous pets. I had to do that one year after my large dog tried to chew through a door. (4th of July fireworks scared him terribly) quote: ORIGINAL: winterlight could a nervous cat or dog need Prozac?

Both of my parents cats are in general quite nervous/careful. They have them since 4 years and were catched as kitten as their mum was a wild stray cat (their mum and the 3 kittens were re-homed, 2 of them here). They never lost their wild stray attitude and always need a while to get used to people again, when they haven't seen them. When my parents come back on friday they will take their time again to trust them...but as I said they have them now since 4 years and that's the first time that this cat has this fur issue and we have never had fur problems in the past 26 years with cats, which is why I posted it...

Gracious occasionally does this to a small patch on her right arm. Havent figured out why. BUt it's only once or twice a year.

thanks LaT...I am not often at my parents place (otherwise I guess I would turn bold) so I don't know how sexually active she is...or maybe its her attempt to look slimmer as she is...our heaviest cat we have ever had...phew...just called the vet, nope I can't go with her as they only want cash straight away...well, so she has to wait for next week as my few remaining euros I do need for my week here...despite that I don't even know how much she would charge...
