The Sears Tower to be renamed as Willis Tower

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/03/sears-tower-being-renamed.html

no matter what the name - it will always be Sears Tower to me like US Celluar Field is Comiskey Park to this Sox fan

That is just wrong and pathetic in my opinion.  Sears hasn't been in business for over what 15 years, so the name is not really associated with a business - if it ever was, its simply the Sears Tower.  I can't believe this business is so desperate for attention they would do this.  That's all it is -- publicity and attention no matter negative or positive is always good i guess.  I would recommend anyone against this write to the company and tell them how sad this makes them.   I am going to write Mayor Daley also for his idiotic support of this name change and tell him to quit worrying about campaign funds.  Whoever sold them this and included naming rights needs to be smacked also. lol can you tell it irritates me.  I love Chicago and looking at the skyline and seeing the Sears Tower is always a moment of pride for me.  Not because of the business but because of the building and what it is to Chicago -- the Sears Tower.

It's just like Comiskey and other things that have had name changes, most locals will keep calling it by its original name. Who calls the south end of the Dan Ryan "the Bishop Ford Freeway" besides the traffic guys on radio?

Just wait.....that is not the only thing to be renamed...the friendly confines name is up for sale.  Ahhh..remember Dyke Stad. at Northwestern "in honor of the man we will never rename this place"  until someone offers us enough money.

tradition is the crap they sell to fans to keep them coming back, it's business, no more no less.

Seems I missed something. Sears didn't build it to 'house' Sears offices ? The same Sears that had been in business since the 1800's ? I believe Sears is still very much in business and just needs the cash similar to Chrysler selling the 'Chrysler building in NY. But then, I coulda missed something.

housesub4you -> RE: the Willis Tower?! (3/12/2009 12:39:41 PM)

It actually it was their corp office after it was built, then they moved everything out to their new home off I-90 in Shaumburg

DomKen -> RE: the Willis Tower?! (3/12/2009 3:25:04 PM)

Actually Sears is now merged with K-Mart, with K-Mart execs in charge from what I understand. Although it is still headquartered out in Hoffman Estates. There hasn't been any Sears offices in the Tower since 1993.

They might as well name it 'the Penis Tower' [&:].

How about the Big Willy Tower?

pahunkboy -> RE: the Willis Tower?! (3/13/2009 4:01:15 PM)

What a hairbrained idea!

The Hancock was the tallest building, until the Sears Tower was built.  It has nothing to do with "Sears".  It has to do with local culture and that much of the world knows what the Sears Tower is.    Didnt they learn with the Marshal Fields fiasco?

I had no Idea what the bishop expressway was.  I know/knew the Ryan, Stevensen, Kennedy, what is a traffic update with out the post office?

Of course they took the S curve out of LSD, and got rid of belmont rocks.  I think everyone should use a different name instead of the corporate name of the "institutions".

Next thing you know they will die the Chicago river, "bale out green" for the week.

Living in Chicago it is sad to see landmarks change names.  I know people who still call the ballpark Comiskey in lieu of "The Cell."

Things do change.  I am concerned about what will happen to Wrigley Field ...It would be such a shame to see them rename it "The Great Stimulus Ballpark."

pahunkboy -> RE: the Willis Tower?! (3/13/2009 4:11:45 PM)

I can see the tourist commercial.   Come to the onion marsh.  Chicago- Indian for onion marsh.   land of marshy environs, and pussy willows- topped off by the crowned jewel of the lake.  pussy willis tower.

and you thought willis was a charactor from a corny 80s sit com!   No.  just like a pussy willow on the prairie- willis tower reaches for the sky, on the onion marsh, on the lake.

come collect snails with us today!!

I agree.
I wonder if the sky deck.  whoopz. Willis deck will be the same price.   The Hancock was a better price at one time- for roughly the same experience.  I recall as a kid- in school we went on a field trip- the Hancock had just opened.

I moved from Chicago in 88.  When I visit0 and they talk about roads- a few were built since I left. So that and the name changes get confusing.

I understand the Manhiem is Lagrange, and Crawford is Pulaski.     (depending)

The Sears Tower is sort of special to me.  My first apartment that I live don my own, had a view of it.  Around evening  the lights would come on.  Then late evening the lights would go off.

That was a neat apartment.  Division St.(at the Kennedy)  3rd floor. The 4th floor had an even better view.
I think it was 1986 when I lived there.    It wasnt the safest area to look lost. (tho)

After that I bought a 3 unit in Logan Square.   I dont miss the tight space.  Impossible to park and nerve racking to do errands.   Funny a buddy seen me out and about. He said I ram around like I still live in Chicago.  lol
