Over the past few weeks, I've spent a lot of time debating, chiding and sometimes even poking my conservative fellow users. Now I'd like to take a moment to thank them.

One of the most vital signs of a functioning free society is a loud and spirited debate of public issues. It is not the shouting that should frighten us. It is the silence. It is only in a situation where differing opinions are aired, examined and argued that any progress towards either truth or solutions can be gained.

I know this is no easy task. I spent eight years in violent opposition to almost everything proposed or carried out by the previous administration. I voiced my objections and was called a traitor, a supporter of terrorism and anti-American. So I well understand that speaking the minority opinion is not an easy task. It is, however, a necessary one.

If nothing else, by speaking as the opposition you can point out things that supporters of the administration might well miss. Again, this is not an easy road to take and does often put you into a position of sounding as if you agree with the conspiracy theorists and fringe believers, yet it is a necessary part of the most basic requirement of a free society: The exercise of the right of free speech.

So, while my disagreement with you is likely to continue on most issues, I wanted to take a moment to thank you. Keep doing what you're doing. And keep in mind the there are some of us who appreciate Voltaire's wisdom when he said, "I may not agree with a thing you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it."

And now I will return to doing my best to make soda come out your nose, steam come out of your ears and my version of things come into your minds.

Wow, check it out! I was just watching Rachel Maddow, and her guest was Megan McCain... who is advocating a moderate stance, and actually picking a fight with Ann Coulter via her blog on "The Daily Beast." How cool is that? An honestly moderate republican... (here I thought they were long extinct.) Nice girl. Too bad she's about to be plowed under by the monsters that lurk inside the dark caves of the party she obviously loves so much...  yep, too bad... if the GOP really wanted to reform itself, and become electable again... they could do worse than her. Clearly!

Well ain't you just all magnanimous and shit...

In my oh so humble opinion, it was the tone of the dissent against Bush that put him over the top for his '04 re-election.  It was certainly enough to be that last straw for me when it came to voting for the Democrat by default.  I very much hope the Repubs have taken that lesson.

Gay marriage and the back-lash is why bush squeaked by in '04'.Just being an incumbent earns someone 5 points or more, depending.

He won by less that that.

Tone of dissent?lol

We were losing GIs by the dozen every week in Iraq in '04',for nothing more that bush`s ego.

What did you expect folks to do?

Cheer?

Good god.

Are you aware, O59, that what put Prop 8 (gay marriage ban) over the top in CA last November was the high black turnout for One Big Ass Mistake America*?  70% of black voters were in favor.

What were you supposed to do?  How about not alienate the middle?  How about not be so extreme in your abuse, that people got defensive on behalf of the guy?  Mighta worked.  Then again, your candidate really sucked.

*This showed up in my email today.  It's clever, but I haven't decided yet if it is over the top as a personal attack.

One thing I will say for you Spinner, you're capable of generating almost as much eye-roll material as my uncle, who is the most ardent conservative I've ever known. If you only knew how much like him you sounded, albeit from the opposing end of the see-saw.

It is something of a daydream perhaps that someday those who scream loudest at each other will eventually realize they have more body parts than a mouth and in the ensuing melee, what will emerge are people who can actually live together and mind their own business. I know. Pipe dreams. But someone has to have them.

I guess in the meantime, I'll do what I've done for the past 8 years, which is stand somewhere in the middle and urinate on both sides... unless they catch fire that is, then I'll happily sit down and watch them burn. Wouldn't want to waste a good piss putting out a useful fire.

By the way, I'm in New York this week, back again in a couple of weeks. If you want to have a sit down dinner and talk politics with a guy who doesn't give a  damn about either side, shoot me an email. Odd that a southern boy has to come north to teach these folks how to do things. Grin.

She doesn't seem to be worried about the 1400 jobs lost at Anheuser Bush so her family could rake in a cool  $17,000,000 in the InBev buyout...Sounds pretty typical of greedy Republican bastards to me.
