It's ridiculous how tough it is. I 'deleted' my facebook for two years (after two years of activity on it) because I did not want to be tagged in photos anymore. People would tag me in things that I would purposedfully UNTAG myself from (and in some cases retag me even after I sent them a message asking not to be tagged). It saved my profile in the exact same condition (searching for it after 'deleting' still made it show up, I was still on my friend's friends list and my friends list and all other things were still intact. So I re-activated it, and then un-friended everyone, deleted all information, untagged myself from all pictures (if they're not friends with you they couldn't tag you and link you to the photo) and everything else to make my profile literally just 'exist', then changed the name to something silly (I think I chose "Speedy Gonzales") and reported the profile as a fake profile. THAT got them to delete it. When I joined it again recently using the same email I didn't even get a warning or anything (probably because it had been 2 years? I dunno) but I'm wary enough now of who I add and such, and the new privacy settings are wonderful.
