Sometimes group leaders do it out of spite, It sounds silly I know, but the age of a certain tea party group was changed to 25, because the group leader felt that by making it 25 most people would have moved away from their parents and matured by then.

I've often wondered about this but have assumed that it is to circumvent any consumption of alcohol by those under 21. I am incorrect?

I can see that  some never mature

That is a great quote and would make a fun sig line.

She's of the generation that has pretty much always embraced their strangeness. If only I'd embraced my inner Ziggy Stardust as easily as shes' embraced her inner Dita Von Teese *chuckles*.

As serenekitten stated, the Maine TNG group is open to anybody 18+.  Though the majority of our members seem to be between 24 and 30, some of our newest members are in the 18-20 range.  It seems they are far more comfortable beginning to join the kink community up here starting first with people of similar and/or close ages.  The only time TNG Maine restricts ages to 21+ is if the venue requires it (at bars, e.g.).  We try to hold the best part of our activities in locations where 18-20 y/o's would be welcomed, that everybody may participate.  As somebody else pointed out, we'll not be able to remain in TNG our entire lives--much as we might wish we would never get any older than 35--so TNG Maine encourages its members to check out and get involved with the larger kink community of Maine/New England.  We also remind TNGers that there's a lot we can gain from the older/more experienced kinksters, if we simply try.  Many of our members do participate at events with the older kinksters in this area, and most feel welcomed and fairly comfortable at events with "the older crowd."

On the other hand, you'd be surprised how many young people in the TNG group I belong to listen to bowie, springsteen or even neil diamond.

There is something that does interest Me though.  It isn't really worthy of a thread of it's own, (someone changed My mind on that) but I'm curious about the different insights that might be had.  It's only going to apply to those who are under 21 or partners with those in the 18-20 bracket, past or present.

More and more, local BDSM communities have started up TNG groups.  Still, a lot of kink groups are twenty one and over only.  Of the four that I belong to, only one allows members at eighteen.  The same is true of the club that I frequent most often.  Only people twenty one and over are allowed.

I realize that not everyone is interested in public play or in being involved in the kink community.  However, if that is part of life that you enjoy, how have you dealt with this obstacle?  If you have had a hand in starting new groups, or changing the rules of existing ones, I'd be interested in hearing your experience with that.

I'm not into bdsm communities, but a lady friend of mine was. She was 17 and obviously not allowed to partake in any activities. But she was on a college campus and had no problem finding people with similar interests who were willing to tie up and abuse a teenage girl.

I think young male doms would be the most hard hit by their age...oh god, I really hope this thread doesn't open up that can of whining worms.

The way Black Rose and some other TNG groups handle it is -- if one partner is over 35 and the other is under, the one who is under 35 "sponsors" the older partner as a guest.  When both are too old, they transition to the main group or another local group that allows those over 35.  That's assuming they aren't part of both already.

...that's sad.
