Obviously, you don't know what the Bushies did to McCain when they ran against him.  From Wikipedia:

"An anonymous smear campaign began against McCain, delivered by push polls, faxes, e-mails, flyers, and audience plants.[125][141] The smears claimed that McCain had fathered a black child out of wedlock (the McCains' dark-skinned daughter was adopted from Bangladesh), that his wife Cindy was a drug addict, that he was a homosexual, and that he was a "Manchurian Candidate" who was either a traitor or mentally unstable from his North Vietnam POW days.[125][135] The Bush campaign strongly denied any involvement with the attacks.[135]"

Also, the Bushies claimed that Max Cleland was not patriotic enough. I suppose they thought that losing only three limbs wasn't enough.

Which made it all the more surprising that McCain resorted to similar tactics.

I was actually happy McCain won the Republican nomination because I thought no matter who won we had a win-win situation.

Then he morphed into his evil twin from a parallel universe.

For me, the best moment of McCain's campaign occurred at the Alfred E Smith Dinner. There is a tradition for both candidates for president to show up to that dinner, make a few jokes and have a good time. During that speech, McCain said about Obama "I cannot wish him luck, but I can wish him well". For that moment, though I didn't agree with his policies, I had a great deal of respect for the man.

I find it a shame he could not continue to live up to that moment.

rulemylife: that's exactly my point! It wasn't McCain himself who fucked up his campaign... it was the party handlers who were pulling the strings of it. Do you really thing McCain chose Sarah Palin as his V.P. choice? He'd only met her once, and had a couple of phone conversations before the announcement! THE PARTY chose her as a way of appealing to the religious gun toatin' nutcase base. The Party were the ones who kept up this BS about Obama's birth certificate, about his "palling around" with Ayres, their claims of his being Muslim. (All of which led to the moment where McCain began to recover... when he corrected the nutcase lady in the red sweater about Obama being "an arab.")

As I said before, it was the same crap that ruined Bob Doles chances too. They turned the candidate into something he was not. And Americans can smell that kind of manipulation, even through their TV sets.
