The story about the airline charging customers to relieve themselves in-flight brought to mind something I saw in yesterday's papers. Making toilet paper from virgin wood is a lot worse than driving [petrol-thirsty cars] in terms of global warming pollution."

American producers of the products maintain that there is ample choice for consumers, with recycled toilet paper - which involves less use of chemicals when manufactured - available widely in the US.

Good morning, RL,

I pay attention to quality before buying recycled paper products, toilet paper, facial tissue or paper towels. So far so good. Check to make sure the toilet paper is either single or double ply depending on your needs. Some septic systems and all outhouses/port-a-potties need single ply. Some of the larger chain stores carry their own house brands of organic, natural and recycled products and maintain a lower price that way. Seventh Generation makes a variety of household products for cleaning, laundry, dishwashing, diapers for unmentionables, feminine care products and paper products. Most natural food stores and some of the larger chain stores stock Seventh Generation.

At the risk of taking this thread south, I made some significant dietary changes a year and a half ago including: 5-6 small meals per day, reduction in processed foods, decoupling of carbohydrate-rich foods from protein-rich foods any one meal, vast increase in the amount of "live" foods such as raw or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables. The resultant changes in my digestive system have been better regularity and better stool consistency. This has reduced my overall use of toilet paper, although it wasn't my goal or intent. By the way, I've lost quite a few pounds too, so the big winners include me and the environment.

We could always go back to the out house with an old catalogue process but that might get a bit chilly in the winter months.

It's re-cycled or the corn cob for me, thanks.

I do have a strong preference for the no-wipe ghost turd, though.

the church i went to as a small person had a two-holer. i used to make my cousin go with me....to clear the place of spiders. cold was ok, spiders are NOT.

the only place i ever saw recycled toilet paper was at a health food store where it cost around $10 for 4 rolls.
sorry, but i can't afford that. =p if i can get 12 rolls for 4.74, then that's what i'm getting =p

i think part of the reason why a lot of americans DON'T use a lot of recycled products is become some of them are soooo heinously expensive!

Not always true, Rainy. Publix carries their own brand ( Green Wise ) of recycled paper ass-wipe and paper towels which are as good as or better than name brands. They cost about the same but, because they come from recycled paper, are better for the environment.

That's what I buy and the cost is comparable or cheaper than anything else.

But I haven't seen any recycled paper products anywhere but Publix and that's the only brand they carry.

And I can't believe I am so bored that I'm on here talking about toilet paper.

I have no experience of the ghost pecker, but I share your suspicion that they may be related.

Personally, I think one of many reasons that Americans don't buy the recycled toilet paper, is for whatever assanine reason many think that it is recycled from used toilet paper, not other papers. Another reason is that the first several brands of the recycled toilet paper were very similar to the ole corn cob, they were rough, and it turned lots of people away from them in the early stages, now they are better.

In my area the larger grocery stores have many of the recycled paper products, and they are not as expensive as they once were. They are much more comparable at this point both inn quality and price

Ghost peckers were first described in Jarhead (Swofford), which are peckers that stealthily screw your mate while you're deployed overseas....

Ah, thanks for clearing that up , thorny. I suspected that a ghost pecker, like a ghost turd, leaves no trace and even makes one wonder if it was there or just a figment of the imagination.
