I really enjoy the Les Stroud hosted program, Survivorman.  He's informative, and he gives good, practical advice for wilderness survival.  I'm not so much a fan of Bear Grylls and his show.  He takes really, ridiculous risks.  You'd get killed if you followed half of the things he does on his show.  Do you think I'm wrong with my critique?

Anyway as someone that enjoys the outdoors, I'd thought this would be a fun discussion.  I just happened to be watching Les Stroud tonight on Discovery, so I thought of doing this thread.  Discuss.

humbledude64 -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/27/2009 11:41:19 PM)

I watch both shows now and then.  They are both good, but I give the edge to Bear for he is more entertaining... and that's the purpose of TV.   I mean, he swam under the ice in Siberia.  How cool is that?   Very, very , VERY cool!   Plus, his accent is easy on the ears.
I plan on using none of the techniques shown.  My idea of roughing it is no room service.

I have to agree with humbledude.  Anytime I watch television, I am looking to get farther from reality.  Entertainment is a much higher priority.  Another vote for Bear Grylls.

To each their own.  I just find many of his antics to be ill-advised.  Eating bear shit and drinking your own urine are good ways to make you incredibly ill or kill you.

RealityLicks -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/28/2009 3:36:32 AM)

I can't compare them because I haven't heard of survivorman  but--- there was a scandal over here because Bear apparently gets choppered out to a five star hotel every evening.  He is an ex-commando and I suppose has good survival skills but that's how it's sometimes done in TVland.  Btw, do you have Ray Mears?  He's the big fat dude who shows you a more mellow, contemplative way to survive with nothing but a knife, a flint and some tarp.

Vendaval -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/28/2009 3:38:28 AM)

Does Bear eat raw meat and shit in the woods?

Vendaval! Shocked you can even spell a word like that!                                                                                                                           Ray Mears clip - chilled survival in the Candian Rockies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvRR5MTBBQI

Ah, that phrase is a common US joke and the temptation was too great to resist.[:D]

I always get those mixed up.  You're right, it's the pope that's Catholic and the Bear that shits in the woods.

That's right. In the UK, they just bait bears before Shakespere plays.

Both shows are pretty ridiculous.

Step #1 to survival: Don't get caught in the wilderness.

RealityLicks -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/28/2009 6:55:45 AM)

Ray Mears is a little more grounded in reality and shows what seems to the layman to be genuine woodcraft.

But the wilderness is where it's at!

He takes risks that I wouldn't take, but then again I don't know what he's getting paid. I think the point though is to relate to the audience the sort of things that may be required in order to survive through extreme circumstances.

It's interesting to me, and kind of fun to almost gag while watching some of the craziness he forces himself to endure for our edutainment.

What beats me is why these channels seem to love putting these programs on (along with the weird foods programs) during the dinner hours...

Crush -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/28/2009 8:00:00 AM)

I watch them both and give "real" survival points to Les.

( I even have a SPOT now, because of his recommendation so when I'm out, even on my motorcycle, I've a quick way to summon help most anywhere in the world.Never needed it in Belize, but I had it there, just in case. And I was able to just leave it in tracking mode, so family could follow our traverses and we had a map of our journeys afterwards for our memories.)

Bear is interesting, but there are so many other skills you can use without resorting to some of the things he does.  Lot of wasted energy sometimes...the one thing you can't afford in the early stages of survival.

I haven't seen Mears' show, but it sounds interesting.  I'm all about low key bubba-style survival.

Vendaval -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/28/2009 2:53:03 PM)

Hey, the advertisers need to hit the right target audience so they wait until the bread winners come home and everyone is zoning out on TV and not talking to each other.

When you postulate "Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls", do you mean which show do we prefer, or which one do we think would win in a fight to the death? Cuz if it's the latter, that's one TV show I might like to watch.

eponavet -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/28/2009 6:51:50 PM)

I love Survivorman.....and i HATE Man vs. Wild.  Bear Grylls has been busted so many times faking shit that i just can't stand watching his pompous ass do anything except bust it! [:-]

I do know who Ray Mears is, but I don't get his program on my selection of cable channels.  I have watched him on Youtube, and I found it informative.

RainydayNE -> RE: Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls (2/28/2009 8:27:25 PM)

les stroud wins hands down.
bear grylls is terrible. =p he has a crew that helps him all the time and YES he does take some insane risks. =p i actually learn interesting stuff watching survivorman :) haha
one of the few times i've sat through man vs. wild, there was a screen that said something about bear having the help of his crew to build a bigger, better shelter =p
