ScooterTrash -> Pay as you go driving? (2/20/2009 7:42:20 AM)

Anyone see this crap? We would pay more for better mileage vehicles (hybrids, electric, etc.), just so the government can go after the lost tax money (gasoline tax) by charging you by the miles driven. If this would ever come to be, I suspect a bit of a revolution....ya think?

Termyn8or -> RE: Pay as you go driving? (2/20/2009 8:20:35 AM)

So we went from the proposed email tax that has been thoroughly debunked, to the money rental plan actually proposed by someone at the gov or the fed, which would never happen because it would be political suicide, to this.

This one sounds a bit more serious though, they probably mean it. If not enacted via computers in cars, maybe it'll be at charging stations for electric cars. One thing is once they set their sights on your money, they seem to find ways to get  it.

What about bicycles ? They use the roads  as well, they just don't tear them up. Perhaps I should shut up before they get any more bright ideas.

With the cost  of alternatively fueled vehicles in the near future, this is yet another huge disincentive to buy one. Just what we need.

But remember something I've been saying for a while, it  is their money, they printed it and now they want it all back. All of it.  What possible other conclusion could one draw ?

Well, let's see. Obama just signed a bill giving him and everyone else in the world access to all of our medical records. So why not a little government GPS unit attached to all of our vehicles too? Why not.

If they stop taxing gasoline as anything more than income for the companies and public transportation were exempt... I don't see the problem.

You (the person with the Hybrid car) would still be missing a lot of costs by not needing much gasoline (in comparison) in the first place. I have a friend who owns a Prius (they're purrrrty) and gets gas maybe once a month... but his car is still messing up the roads just as much as my dad's Pacifica, and HE gets gas at least once a week (sometimes more); this is just to go to work and home (they both live about the same difference from their respective work places).

And the simple truth is that cars *RUIN* roads. That's what the gas tax goes into, first, to repair... the roads (or, that's what I was told in school)!

If you're going to mess up the damned roads, you better be willing to pay for the privilege, in my opinion, or else be willing to take public transportation or long-distance transportation which would actually become cheaper (and create more jobs for vehicle technicians and operators etc.)

EDIT: to add a 'than' and also:

I wouldn't support a GPS system, of course, but monitoring mileage wouldn't be a big deal.

CatdeMedici -> RE: Pay as you go driving? (2/20/2009 8:44:16 AM)

You didn't think they were going to dole out $780B out of the goodnees of their heart without a bonafide means of getting it back did ya?

Its called your 50 lbs of flesh.

Monitor my mileage all day long, and you'll probably end up owing ME

TGIF Scooter,

I read the article and that sounds like a poorly conceived idea that would be very difficult to implement and enforce.  It is much easier to set up cameras on highways to monitor the traffic flow than to chase down every automobile owner and require them to install a tracking device.  And what branch of law enforcement would want to be hassled by more paperwork and wasted time and more importantly how would the states pay for such enforcement?

I think it more likely that we will see increased tolls for specific stretches of highways and roads along with the usual tolls on bridges.

Which would be illegal, then.

They tend to throw people who do illegal things in jail.

Humm as I suspected, a history of paranoia..[8|]

Judging by the Obama administration, dodging taxes is practically my civic duty!

I'm not paranoid you're uninformed.

quote:

What didn't come up during the president's first press conference was how one section of the convoluted legislation--it's approximately 800 pages total--is intended to radically reshape the nation's medical system by having the government establish computerized medical records that would follow each American from birth to death.

Billions will be handed to companies creating these databases. Billions will be handed to universities to incorporate patient databases "into the initial and ongoing training of health professionals." There's a mention of future "smart card functionality."

Yet nowhere in this 140-page portion of the legislation does the government anticipate that some Americans may not want their medical histories electronically stored, shared, and searchable. Although a single paragraph promises that data-sharing will "be voluntary," there's no obvious way to opt out.

I'm reading your medical records remember, I don't make this stuff up.[8|]
People used to die whilst waiting for blood tests to come back telling those treating them what blood type they were. I obviously draw the line at selling this information to insurance companies and that is the obvious risk and must be prevented at all costs.

Lucylastic -> RE: Pay as you go driving? (2/20/2009 3:18:58 PM)

Just an update on this....
The Obama administration will not support a policy of taxing drivers based on their mileage, the Transportation Department said Friday after a published interview in which Secretary Ray LaHood called it an idea "we should look at."

First you claimed I was paranoid because I was aware of this part of the "stimulus bill" and you obviously weren't..

Now you're trying to claim that you've always known that the great Obama intends to keep us all from ever dying by collecting every bit of medical data we ever generate.

You're funny...   [:D]

No that was me joking I read such a thing in your medical records and it confirmed what I thought from previous experience.

It's funny if you think Obama cares you are prescribed Viagra, the truth is this information is useful to two types of people: those treating you and those insuring you. No one else cares that you broke your leg aged eighteen pole dancing.

Oh yeah and those selling you stuff, forgot those.

Unless you're, say, a Republican governor of Alaska running for VP?

Medical records can tell all kinds of people all sorts of things. Say you're filling out the forms to purchase a gun. Ever had a Xanax? Ever abused drugs of any kind? Ever entered treatment for alcoholism? Let's check and see...

Or how about this - Ever asked your doctor an awkward question?

This law will discourage that. It's like a GPS chip in your car so government can track you "for tax purposes". If its there, its going to be abused.

Small government is good government, but there are those who will never be happy until there is a camera on every street corner.

For God's sakes.....don't say anything negative about the man though!!!!

"An Oklahoma City man has had his anti-abortion bumper sticker confiscated by police who told him it represented a potential threat to President Obama.
A report in the online edition of the city's Oklahoman newspaper said police later returned the bumper sticker, which said, "Abort Obama Not the Unborn."

In every gun control discussion I've been involved in someone has told me extensive checks are made for things such as mental illness, are you saying that isn't the case currently? Bad example to convince me since I don't want anyone with guns roaming the streets let alone alcoholic or drug abusing gun owners because such people generally find someone else to blame for their misery other than themselves i.e. it's the wife or the ex boss.

Or how about this - Ever asked your doctor an awkward question?

I don’t see my doctor much and when I do I’m sharing him with hundreds of other patients, therefore I want a system in place that ensures the information he needs to know about me is to hand. He does not know me personally in this day and age that would be a rarity unless you lived in a low populated area.

Like I said recently small government would assume everybody had the same shortlist of things they want the government to regulate, be it guns, corporations, welfare, transport etc. Therefore as everyone has a different list of things they want their government to get involved in, small governments tends to be limited to the islands of the pacific where government funding is problematic in any case.

Sanity -> RE: Pay as you go driving? (2/20/2009 4:24:20 PM)

But in our case Obama says "We can't be out of money - there's still checks in our check book!"
