How race relations are going in france ;)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/4417096.stm
http://riotsfrance.ssrc.org/

Civil Unrest in the French Suburbs, November 2005 On October 27, 2005, two French youths of Malian and Tunisian descent were electrocuted as they fled the police in the Parisian suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois.  Their deaths sparked nearly three weeks of rioting in 274 towns throughout the Paris region, France, and beyond (see maps, pictures, and graphs here.)  The rioters, mostly unemployed teenagers from destitute suburban housing projects (the cités HLM) caused over €200 million in damage as they torched nearly 9000 cars and dozens of buildings, daycare centers, and schools.  The French police arrested close to 2900 rioters; 126 police and firefighters were injured, and there was one fatality – a bystander who died after being struck by a hooded youth.

The French government’s response, if not swift, was predictable. Then Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy declared a “zero tolerance” policy towards urban violence.  A year later, when civil unrest again flared up in the same suburbs – on October 1, 2006 in Les Mureaux, Yvelines, again the result of an incident with the police – Sarkozy returned to the his “law and order” discourse.  The government’s response in November 2005 and since was amplified by a wide range of commentary that attempted to link the rioting to illegal immigration, Muslim separatism, and polygamous practices.  In fact, while most of the rioters were second generation immigrant youths, the underlying issues were far more complex, involving social and economic exclusion, racial discrimination, and most importantly the capacity of the French Republic to respond to these challenges while maintaining its distinctive model of and formal commitment to the social integration of individuals, no matter what their color or creed.

N retrospect, it was not a good idea to have left his pistol at home. Called to the scene of a traffic accident in the Paris suburbs last Sunday, Jean-François Illy, a regional police chief, came face to face with a mob of immigrant youths armed with baseball bats, iron bars and shotguns. What happened next has sickened the nation. As Illy tried to reassure the gang that there would be an investigation into the deaths of two teenagers whose motorbike had just collided with a police car, he heard a voice shouting: “Somebody must pay for this. Some pigs must die tonight!” The 43-year-old commissaire realised it was time to leave, but that was not possible: they set his car ablaze. He stood as the mob closed in on him, parrying the first few baseball bat blows with his arms. An iron bar in the face knocked him down. “I tried to roll myself into a ball on the ground,” said Illy from his hospital bed. He was breathing with difficulty because several of his ribs had been broken and one had punctured his lung. His bruised and bloodied face signalled a worrying new level of barbarity in the mainly Muslim banlieues, where organised gangs of rioters used guns against police in a two-day rampage of looting and burning last week. Not far from where Illy was lying was a policeman who lost his right eye after being hit by pellets from a shotgun. Another policeman displayed a hole the size of a 10p coin in his shoulder where a bullet had passed through his body armour. Altogether 130 policemen were injured, dozens by shotgun pellets and shells packed with nails that were fired from a homemade bazooka. It prompted talk of urban “guerrilla warfare” being waged on French streets against the forces of law and order.

Nothing new there, mon brave. But it's not because racism is rife in France that you shouldn't clear your own backyard: I thought it was all about showing those goddam Euros how things should be done, not the other way around [8D] .

a slightly different topic.  Don't you find it funny that Hispanics which are descendants of Native-Americans want to speak there language in the united states.  A language (spanish)of the people who initially conquered them ;)

Did i hit a nerve? You're correct that Hispanic isn't a race, but Latinos aren't Caucasians....they are a mix of races, largely descendants of Native-Americans  that mixed often  with white, and commonly African Americans.
Es Verdad....lo siento.
edited to add....if you read the link i included...it was including Blacks and Asians....i wan't trying to mislead or bullshit anyone.

Have you ever tried to learn German? You do know English and german are closely related, right? Well, I took 2 years of German at the Goethe Institute and I'm barely able to communicate in that language. English is much harder. English has a MILLION words. How easy do you think it is to go from a romance language to English? Whenever I hear such statements, I can tell the utterer has absolutely no clue.

BTW, it's "their", not "there".

During the past 7 years we would have a place called GITMO that would stop such things from occuring ;)

Hello kitten,

In part because the people who came here were not usually the ones who had wealth and land and power back home.  The practice of primogeniture caused many younger sons to see their fortune in the colonies.
Many of the people wanting to escape debtors prisons in Europe signing up as indentured servants to pay for their passage to America.  Add to that immigration by the millions of Irish Catholics who came during the Great Irish Famine who were poor and hungry and you get some sense of the colonies being filled with the rabble of Europe.

"In the early history of the United States, many European immigrants served a period of indentured labour in order to pay the cost of their transportation. This practice was common during the 17th and 18th centuries, where over half of immigrants worked off an average of three years servitude."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indenture

"During and after the "Great Irish Famine" (or Great Hunger; Irish: An Gorta Mór) of 1845-1850, millions of Irish Catholics came to North America. Many lived in Canada and the United States. Many Irish who left Ireland for America during the famine and subsequent years did not make their destination. Due to poverty, ill health and poor conditions a significant number died en route. As a result the ships they travelled on became known as coffin ships.[3]"

So let's have a discussion about "racial matters."  Our new attorney general has sent out the call, and we should all stand up and take notice.  Otherwise, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton may soon be out of work.  We have to keep this fight against racism perpetual.

Aww, man... I thought half the reason we elected the black guy was to get them to STFU already [&o]

Interesting. Thanks for the historical take, Ven - this explains a lot, I agree. I also think that America somewhat suffers from 'little sister' syndrome, feeling that she has to compete to be on par with her older siblings, and that one of the ways she can do this is to disparage them, whilst secretely pining to be like them *running for cover here* [8D] .

Vendaval -> RE: U.S. Attorney General thinks America is cowardly on racial issues (2/19/2009 8:25:34 PM)

You are welcome, kitten.  Americans were thought of as rough and uneducated by Europeans for a long time.  Of course there are Australia and New Zealand and the whole penal colony approach but that is another thread.  [;)]

Muslim TV mogul Muzzammil Hassan's alleged beheading of wife, Aasiya Hassan, may be 'honor killing' By Fred O. Williams
THE BUFFALO NEWS Tuesday, February 17th 2009, 10:13 AM
The gruesome death of Orchard Park resident Aasiya Zubair Hassan — who was found decapitated — and the arrest of her estranged husband are drawing widespread attention, as speculation roils about the role that the couple’s religion may have played. Muzzammil Hassan, 44, was arrested Thursday and charged with second- degree murder after telling police his wife was dead at the office of their television station in the Village of Orchard Park. While Muslim leaders have urged against applying cultural stereotypes to the crime, advocates for women linked the killing to attitudes in Muslim societies. “This was apparently a terroristic version of honor killing, a murder rooted in cultural notions about women’s subordination to men,” said Marcia Pappas, New York State president of the National Organization for Women. She decried the scant national media attention paid to the story, which broke the same day as the commuter plane crash that killed 50 people in Clarence. While domestic violence affects all cultures, Muslim women find it harder to break the silence about it because of a stigma, she said. “Too many Muslim men are using their religious beliefs to justify violence against women,” she said.

http://www.voanews.com/english/archive/2004-11/2004-11-16-voa70.cfmTV Report transcript Muslims in America come from many countries and have diverse backgrounds, but they are united by their desire to practice their religion in peace and to replace the negative image many non-Muslim Americans have about Islam.  In this report by Carol Pearson  we meet three very different Americans who practice Islam.Muzzammil Hassan came to America from Pakistan 25 years ago. He became a successful banker in Buffalo, New York, near the famed Niagara Falls.   While he and his wife were happy to be in the United States, they were upset by the negative perceptions of Muslims, and particularly how this perception might affect their children.   That is how they came up with the idea of Bridges TV.  Mr. Hassan's wife challenged him to start it.Mr. Hassan hopes Bridges TV lives up to its name by uniting American Muslims and by helping non-Muslims overcome the negative images they may have of both Muslims and Islam.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,437502,00.html
Almost a year after two teenage girls were found dead — allegedly executed by their father — in the back seat of a taxicab in Texas, the FBI is saying for the first time that the case may have been an "honor killing." and her sister Amina, 18, were killed on New Year's Day, but for nine months authorities deflected questions about whether their father — the prime suspect and the subject of a nationwide manhunt — may have targeted them because of a perceived slight upon his honor.
The girls' great-aunt, Gail Gartrell, says the girls' Egyptian-born father killed them both because he felt they disgraced the family by dating non-Muslims and acting too Western, and she called the girls' murders an honor killing from the start. But the FBI held off on calling it an honor killing until just recently, when it made Yaser Abdel Said the "featured fugitive" on its Web site. "That's what I've been trying to tell everybody all along," Gartrell told FOXNews.com. "I would say that's a victory." But some Muslims say that calling the case an honor killing goes too far.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. . .

My generation was told by the education system, the court system, the political system, the medical system, and scientific community, as well as my parents along with the community that the color of a person's skin did NOT matter.

I believed this.  Hence, I do not think about person's skin color or "race" unless it is pointed out to me.

Now however. . . the color of a person's skin DOES matter, so we need to talk about it.

Instead of race being something that we do not judge people by, it is something that we need to focus on about them.

I do not know about everyone else, but this does not seem like the best way to "fight racism," to me.

The new AG's comments were not aimed at whites...they were aimed  at blacks to keep the pot stirring, to incite more activist actions,in my opinion.....Remarks maybe even to pave the way for a discussion to give "reparations" to the great great grandchildren of slaves. Nothing coming from this White House would surprise me.

The surprise might be to them when the backlash against their dysfunctional policies and programs builds.  Santulli's blast at Obama on CNBC is just the tippy tip of the ice berg of growing outrage among the folk out there who are not racist, don't even think of race, pay their taxes and mortgage, and are being screwed royally.  Can you believe it has been only a month since Barack's inauguration..and taken only a month for him and the democrat party to poison the landscape of America with liberal/socialism?

LadyDay1979 -> RE: U.S. Attorney General thinks America is cowardly on racial issues (2/20/2009 2:59:19 AM)

I would have to disagree with what he said. I think the US better than the other countries that I have lived in. They have along way to go!

LadyDay1979 -> RE: U.S. Attorney General thinks America is cowardly on racial issues (2/20/2009 3:02:27 AM)

You are so true! I tell people that all the time, and they think I am crazy.

LadyDay1979 -> RE: U.S. Attorney General thinks America is cowardly on racial issues (2/20/2009 3:07:06 AM)

My friend, and I love her dearly, says the same thing. We get into several discussions about race, and she is not racist at all. I do not agree with a lot of her views, but I respect her opinions and we agree to disagree.

The biggest cowards of all were the 100th Congress who did not want to rattle their black constituency by passing the Civil Rights and Responsibilities Act of 1964. The Act they did pass has created a 45-year stimulus package for blacks that rewards them, or at least shields the blow, of their own bad life choices.

Pat Buchanan is not my spokesman, but he is the first to put a pricetag on that 45-year-long stimulus package... $40 trillion...
