Yesterday on Yahoo.........................

http://movies.yahoo.com/photos/collections/gallery/1440/the-13-most-iconic-villains-in-horror-history/fp#photo13

Some pretty good ones here but the most evil villain that pops into my mind was not in a "horror" movie, per se, though it was pretty scary to me:

What say you all?

Where was pinhead and all his weird creatures?
Where was the clown from it?
Most of those shown weren't scarey in any way to me.

It's not about being scarey, it was about being an iconic villian.  I would replace Regan with Pinhead though, because it's villians and she wasn't one as such.

Well it was not really an article as much as it was a PR piece.  Just somebody paid to get their clients work in the press, and of course it goes to the front page of Yahoo (for a price of course)

No I did not read the article, it's the same as every othr PR piece before the next Hollywood award show

This is Darcy

As a major horror movie fanatic, I'm a little surprised to see Regan on the list, as she isn't the villain of the piece, though she is iconic.

I'm also a little surprised not to see Pinhead there (as Missturbation pointed out), as along with Jason, Freddy, Leatherface and Michael, he is one of the most recognisable and important villains of the last few decades.

As for what constitutes iconic, I tend to agree that an iconic villain doesn't have to be scary as such. Take Norman Bates - he's not scary, but instead is actually a mixture of being polite, likeable and pathetic all at the same time.

There's also the question of what constitutes a villain, too. I suppose the reason that Frankenstein doesn't appear on the list is because he's not really the villain of that particular piece. But what of the Mummy, Dracula and the Wolfman? All certainly iconic, but villains? Hmmm. The Mummy perhaps, as it (they?) could be seen as avenging spirits. Dracula, almost certainly a villain. The Wolfman, though, a victim of a curse and so therefore not accountable for their actions? Again, tricky.

Along those lines, is Jaws really a villain? I think not. Merely an evolved killing machine doing what comes naturally. The same could be said, too, of the Aliens, and also of one of my favourite and iconic horror movie 'villains', The Thing, in all its various guises.

Nevertheless, an interesting article.

Well, since the title was "... Iconic Villains in Horror History", I think scary is more or less assumed.

In regard to The Exorcist, true, the girl was not the actual villain, but the demon did his dirty work in her form and the permutations thereof, so it is her image that becomes the villain. We have no other way to picture it. I think the error is in calling the villain by Regan's name, as you are correct that she was not the actual villain.

It's such a personal choice: it's like ranking "the most beautiful women in the world" or "The sexiest men" or "the best world leaders"... so much is left up to your own criteria.

Me?Who would I pick?

Hanibal Lecter

Dracula

That woman who recruited rape victims to be suicide bombers.

Ed Gein

John Wayne Gacy

George W. Bush (and his cabinet)

Hitler

hbs - I would rather them go for the statue than Regan.  Horror doesn't have to be scarey so it would be an incorrect assumption.  It just has to be - well - horror.  Horror inspires dislike in something, not necessarily fear - but it can.  Horrible is where the adaptation of the word comes from.  Frankinsteins Monster isn't particularly scarey - in fact he is quite a sad charachter, but the thought of a dead bits sewn together and wanting to be touched and loved might invoke a certain sense of horror for some.

Steven - yes, I did kind of go 'Chucky'?  also.  He just makes me smile, and I cannot even see 'ghost' as scarey since seeing snippets of scarey movie.  I just cannot picture him in the same light ever again.
But I guess they are kind of iconic in their own right.  Mind you, I find the statues in 'Dr.Who' far more higher on the list for me, but then they might not be classed as horror really.

There list has only one that I would count, and that is Jack Nicholson from The Shining.

Others I would have to include are
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Jack Nicholson
It: ( I can never remember the guys name  )
Hellraiser: Pinhead
( though If I was to be completly honest...pinhead was really coooooooooool...in an exciting kind of way )
Primevil
and Keifer Sutherland in this one movie ....I can't remember the exact name but I think it was Dark City...that fucking movie gave me chills

Yes. I am almost positive that it was called Dark City, but I will not swear to it.
That movie just gave me goose bumps all around.

edited to add:
Yes, that's the name of the movie

Jumps up and down

Pennywise...
how can you forget such a name

The clown in IT is Penywise

Anyhow...I am conflicted on my choices....

I love villains in movies, because without them, you can't really have a "good guy" and still have a good plot line

However, I need to ask Irishmist, wasn't Jack more the Hero? and Nurse Ratchet the villain?
