.. A recent chatroom (not on CM) shout suggested that because Obama did not win a majority of white votes, that this is evidence of white racism in america... so following that logic, since Obama won 43% of the white vote, if you assume that 100% of that 43% are not racist, and 100% of the remaining 57% are racist, you get a maximum of 53% of white americans are racists. Continuing in that vein, Obama captured 96% of the Black Vote. Using the same principal, if 100% of those voting for obama are racists, then American Blacks are 1.7 times more racist than American Whites. So it appears that either American Whites are almost twice as racially tolerant as their Black countrymen, or the original premise that "anyone not voting for the other race's candidate must be racist" is flawed....

If a white voter living in Chicago votes at 30 mph and a black voter in Detroit votes at 20 mph while an Asian voter in California votes at 36 mph...

This would take someone that possesses a certain level of intelligence, has an open mind as well as a knowledge about race, voting trends, opportunity, and eductation to sort this out. (amongst other variables)

Your overall conclusions of how people voted is simplistic at best. This is the best I can do on such short notice and still avoid moderation.

I said essentially the same thing when I first heard those stats.

"Tonight the numbers are in and 96% of blacks voted for Obama..."

I told a friend of mine "if the tables had been turned, every headline in America would be talking about how blacks hadn't been given a fair shot" or "More proof of how racist whites are".

Not a peep.

Hey, guys, blacks vote Democratic. Always have. 90+% of the black vote has always gone to the Dem Pres candidate.

The GOP has slipped in support among Hispanics and the youth as well.

If the GOP wants to sit and cry that all those mean blacks are racist, well and good. But after the shellacking they took in November, I think they should do some serious introspection instead.

American Presidents are generally elected on plurality of votes and not by the majority of American votes anyways because a significant percentage of the American voting age population does not vote.

I don't agree that had the majority of White-Americans voted Obama would have lost. I think the majority of White-Americans (at least within a certain age range) were pro-Obama.

It ought be noted Obama was no ordinary candidate also. His color or "racial" background aside, the guy is one of the greatest orators in U.S. political history, and certainly outclasses any man or woman in U.S. politics today in delivery of speechcraft.

True. Since the 1960's that has been true. Prior to the 1960's the majority of Black-Americans were Republicans. The Black vote left for the Democratic party when Robert and John Kennedy helped get Martin Luther King released from jail.

As for social issues like Gay marriage, the majority of Black-Americans remain staunchly conservative, whilst still voting Democrat.
