"Police opened fire on an unarmed couple during a routine traffic stop late Tuesday night because one officer "thought he was shot," a high-ranking Salinas Police Department official said Thursday."

The vehicle ended up riddled with bullet holes and its rear window shot out... but not a single one of the rounds that the cops pumped into it hit the couple.

How does somebody... think... he's been shot? What thought process would lead someone to "Hm, wonder if I've been shot.... yeah, I think maybe I have been..."? I've never been shot, but I'm having a very difficult time imagining any circumstances in which, if I hadn't been shot, I would form a deeply held opinion that I had been.

I thought I had been shot once, but I actually had been stabbed.

possibly hit by a piece of road debris, maybe a small rock, those suckers can hurt!
the marksmanship, while good for the unarmed couple, really speaks badly for the cops involved.

Sure, I can see how someone who has suffered some sort of traumatic injury in a stressful situation could reach the conclusion that maybe they've been shot, but.... how does someone with no injury whatsoever decide they have a gunshot wound, and be so certain of it that they empty their clip at someone?

Thought he had been shot? OK, maybe the word THOUGHT was used a bit loosly here, IMAGINED may have been more accurate.

As for their marksmanship, obviously they (cops) have been watching too much TV. Seems even with automatic weapons everyone misses 99% of the time there.

Doesn't the whole incident just give you that warm fuzzy feeling of security, knowing we have folks out there to serve and protect us....NOT.

It's possible that he meant he thought he'd been shot AT.

Just as a side note ...How many times have we seen trained police officers in gun fights shoot and shoot and shoot and never hit anybody? Yet gun proponents can't seem to see how their, untrained ownership of weapons, can be dangerous.

Those missed rounds have to go somewhere.

My thoughts exactly,it seems every time there is a tragedy, perhaps a school shooting some one voices  the screwy idea that more guns would have lessened the carnage.
In all these scenarios the "good armed samaritan" allways hits what he/she is aiming at.Which is truly remarkable marksmanship considering ,one could assume, this would be the first time said shooter is under fire.

I thought I was a cop once, in a traffic incident and had just been shot...but it turned out I was actually in my kitchen making a tuna fish sandwich.

(Had to buy a brand new fridge the next day).

When I was 18 years old I was hunting and crossing an open field. I was with about six others.  Some fool a distance away fired at us; probably to make us jump.  The sound a really close rifle bullet makes is scary(probably a 30 06).  When I looked up after the bullet had passed I saw a number of the others looking down the front of their bodies seemingly looking to see if they had been hit.  Another was running his hands over his body as if to see if he had been hit.  For a second the others did not know whether they had been shot or not.
