deviantdetroiter -> Is reality TV a reflection on Americas fascination with D/s behavior? (2/9/2009 4:56:48 PM)

I've been working from home for the last few months and have been watching way too much TV with this crappy weather, but was noticing how most of the reality TV shows are primarily D/s relationships to some degree. Granted most of the reality shows appear to be anything but SSC.

Rock of Love - A bunch of women competing for the attention of one man and degrading themselves in the process

Charm School - You have Sharron Osbourne using VA on the women to improve their behavior, and providing homework assignments

I'm sure there are others, but I only made it through VH1's line-up before I decided I should get rid of the DVR.

No it's more a case of "you can sell shit if it's marketed correctly" winning out.

It's only solidified the idea that the masses are indeed asses.

Nah, just pandering to the lowest common denominators in our society and getting the easy money.

Doubt it we live the D/s lifestyle day in and day out and we have yet to watch our first reality show.

This kind of crap infuriates me.  I am an engineer by profession, and I like to think of a product that has value.  But the modern economy drives the cost of production to darn near nothing, and adds marketing to sell something of little intrinsic value.

Examples:
Breakfast cereal, which is basically sweetened grains.
Rap music, which requires little music or talent.
Reality TV, which requires no writers.
Sodas, which are sweetened water.

I think it's a reflection of America's complete and utter stupidity more than anything else.

not just america.  At least Japanese reality TV is good for a laugh...but I bet they laugh just as hard at ours.

Humanity in general is the problem.  Those that make it, those that eat it.

I believe someone mentioned something about lowest common denominators of society. . .I have a few words for this man (and his uppity wife): Get lost and stay that way.

You want to see D/s in reality TV? Watch Hells Kitchen, The Dragons or The Dog Whisperer(sigh) omg! or It's Me or the Dog (the BBC version- she looks JUST like a Domme right out of a magazine)  Other than that I haven't really noticed it. You will see a lot of power play going on and see how easily people can manipulate one another. You will see a lot of drama over nothing and bad behavior.

Even so I can't help  myself.  I love reality TV. I prefer the newer types of shows that usually call out manipulative underhanded behavior instead of promoting it. Well I'm sure they ADD those people to the mix to make good TV, but they never win.  I've seen quite a few where the participants really challenge themselves and learn a lot and gain a lot of poise and confidence from the shows.  I guess I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.

I believe this sums it up quite well.

I also believe that reality tv feeds a hunger in people to live vicariously through others. They can feel involved in something without getting their lazy ass up off the sofa and actually DOING.

I've only seen a few reality programmes, when my daughter has stayed the weekend. A few were humorous in a pathetic way. Like seeing Ozzy Osborne babbling on and on in his drug fried way. Seems there was another that she watches and I ogled hot naked chics but my morning brain isn't telling me what it is at the moment.

The closest I get on any regular basis, is Anthony Bourdain, on the travel channel. He experiences travel much the way I like to, his descriptives fit how I think. And since I don't have his travel budget I have to live vicariously through his programme.

Otherwise, it's National Geographic, History, or old movie channels, for the most part. I enjoy learning, what can I say.
