Well you dont have a job until you receive a paycheck.  Another Obama Team screwup.

General Zinni gets undiplomatic treatment from Obama team Wed, 02/04/2009 - 5:22pm
When retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni told the Washington Times that he was offered the job of U.S. ambassador to Iraq before being passed over in favor of diplomat Christopher Hill, he did not say that one of the outrages of the experience was that his friend of 30 years, fellow former Marine Corps commandant and now national security advisor James L. Jones, had offered him the job, and then failed to tell him when the decision was changed."Jones had called me before the inauguration and asked if I would be willing to serve as ambassador to Iraq or in one of the envoy jobs, on the Middle East peace process," Zinni told Foreign Policy. "I said yes.""Then two weeks ago, Jones called," Zinni continued, "and said, ‘We talked to the secretary of state, and everybody would like to offer you the Iraq job.' I said yes."The [vice]* president called and congratulated me," Zinni said. Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asked for a meeting last Monday night, Zinni said. He said he went to the meeting in her office at the State Department, where Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Williams Burns were also in attendance."She thanks me, asked me my views on Iraq," Zinni recalled. "She said to Burns and Steinberg, ‘We've got to move quickly, Crocker is leaving, we've got to get someone in there and get the paperwork done and hearings... Lots to do to get ready to go." Zinni said he expected a call from Burns the next day. Not hearing from him, he called him. "To make a long story short, I kept getting blown off all week," Zinni said. "Meantime, I was rushing to put my personal things in order," to get ready to go."Finally, nobody was telling me anything," Zinni said. "I called Jones Monday several times. I finally got through late in evening. I asked Jones, ‘What's going on?' And Jones said, ‘We decided on Chris Hill.'""I said, 'Really,'" Zinni recalled. "That was news to me."

Ahhhhhh....Obama got elected...The Sky is falling.... The Sky is Falling.......

LaTigresse -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 4:13:28 AM)

I don't know this particular military whatsit and Generic Dude is still sleeping so I cannot ask him about him.

I have to wonder if something questionable didn't come up in the vetting process, and to avoid further brew ha ha, they changed their mind. With many military people being what they are, arroganceis always a factor and that, along with a bruised ego, could be driving the mouth at the moment. Only speculation of course.

Orrrr, someone screwed up. Can't say without allllllllllll the facts.

Can I ask a question. I mean its been what a month, will the amount of posts like this continue or will it taper off? When Bush first got into power did it taper off? Because though I remember there being a lot of negative threads about him down here but it seems that there are so many more about Obama

Colouredin; when Bush took office in 2001, I heard nothing but accusations of election stealing.  Democrats did nothing but insult him, and seize on every single word he said.  I'm talking about pre-9/11.

I know a lot of folks are enamored with the new POTUS, but he doesn't get a free pass.  He is subject to just as much scrutiny as any other elected official.  If it ruffles the feathers of Obama supporters.....tough shit.  What's good for the goose....you know the rest.

I know that he got a lot of crap, but what I wonder is if it calms down. I agree that when someone runs a country every action can be disagreed with

Lucylastic -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 5:54:39 AM)

Gmorning Coloured, the short answer is no it wont taper off.. the long answer is(in my humble opinion)back in 2001, hell even four years ago, the interwebs had news and forums, but blogs have exploded in the past few years,  more and more people are connecting to news and views that just werent available or popular, its reaching a much wider audience than ever.
Opinions are a like assholes, a dime a dozen and all occasionally stink. Ignore those who make you crazy, listen to the ones who make some sense, and otherwise take what you want and leave the rest. You will learn a lot  even if you dont agree with them. Some are obnoxious, some are funny some are mind warping,  and some make ya go hmmmm(on all sides).
Hide is a great tool tho for those who just make  your eyes rolll
ending hijack as I have nothing to say to the topic

I don't know if it's wise to be putting Generals or Admirals into those kinds of positions.
I think putting an Enlisted person in that position would probably be a better management decision. Much less ego problems.
Also they wouldn't tend to try to make the position into something that it's not and create a feifdom where none should exist.

MasterShake69 -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 7:12:09 AM)

usually the vetting process is used before you congratulate the guy that he's got the job.  Especially having the VP do it.
If that's not the case, then we know what's gone wrong with Obama Administrations vetting process. They are waiting till the very last minute to do it.

LaTigresse -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 7:33:39 AM)

Hmmmmmm, waiting until AFTER offering someone a job, before vetting............maybe Obama's team did learn something from McCain's.

OR.....in a show of bi-partisan good will, they hired some of McCain's, out of work, staff!!![:D]

That would explain everything.

Owner59 -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 8:09:07 AM)

It`s obvious that Zinni doesn`t support the mission.

Which now is,to leave Iraq ,ASAP.

A president needs commanders that support the mission.

Coldwarrior57 -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 8:11:52 AM)

Well , this is a fine line, Every one that works for the US gov serves at the pleasure of the Pres,
he can say who he wants and doesn't.
This does show some real bassackwards thinking on the new pres's way of doing things.
Perhaps this is how some real lack of planning, Doesnt look good for the next 4 years.

Owner59 -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 9:07:37 AM)

Considering the last 8 ,define "good".

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Sorry Zinni you don't get the Iraq job (2/6/2009 2:38:35 PM)

Hiya Limey tart,

It will not taper off. It did not taper off with the Dem cheerleaders aginst the Reps and Bush (though it was actually deserving most of the time with Bush), and you will not see it taper of now with the Rep cheerleaders. It has nothing to do with right or wrong, it has to do with the arguement itself. It is a cycle, kind of like other bad behaviors and emotional reactions are.

BTW, I enevr thought you were as young as you are with how you portray yourself on the boards.

Take care <swats you on the ass>

The criticism(or praise) has to have some basis to be relevant, some sort of truth for there to be any traction.

When cons used to complain that Clinton was a liberal(or an ultra liberal),it never really mattered cuz it wasn`t so.

Even cons have a hard time defending bush and/or Reagenomics.

Us Clinton, them bush,us Clintonomics, them Reagenomics......it must really seem unfair. But in the reality based world, fair and unfair does`nt give a shit.Math, results, success or failure don`t care what side they`re on and are apolitical.

Criticism is part of the deal.A suspicious, curious and unrelenting examination is a necessary evil.A healthy skepticism and speaking truth to power(when true) will always be a part of living together.

These are the people who we allow to run things and if left alone, are almost guaranteed to fuck-up.
