Actually, I'm thinking before the end of February, since not all 303 million Americans work...

500 million/month (assume a 30 day month) -> 16666667 per day -> 694444 per hour -> 11574 per minute -> 192 per second

YES,YES, YES, I know she meant 500,000 /month, as corrected on Fox News Sunday, AS REPORTED BY THE NEW YORK POST:
In a Jan. 18 interview on "Fox News Sunday," Pelosi repeated that 500 million jobs would be lost unless Obama's stimulus package was passed by Congress. When host Chris Wallace corrected her and asked if she meant 500,000 jobs. "What did I say, million?" asked Pelosi, adding that it "feels like 500 million." "Some 500,000 Americans will lose their jobs each month until we have a recovery package," she said.  (http://www.nypost.com/seven/02042009/news/politics/pelosis_500_million_person_slip_153530.htm)

So, let's do the math again, with her corrected numbers:500,000/month -> 16,667/day -> 684/hour -> 12/minute, or one every 5 seconds.

in response to non-sequitor:
Hippie...no one said Bush did a great job in this thread...we're talking about Pelosi and the Democrats in this thread...we can beat up Bush/bush/shrub/chimp in another thread...oh wait, we've had that here for how many years already?  Seems like you are beating a dead horse, um bush....

OK,
This is degenerating into a   Tu quoque and a Red Herring and a non-sequitor

So how did Palin fit into this discussion?  Sure she might have been going for the funds, but hey, at least she could count.

You have some reading to do now so y'all can learn to debate a topic properly...or perhaps to learn new ways to change the direction of the discussion....

http://www.logicalfallacies.info/

and

http://www.fallacyfiles.org/

ed to add: non sequitor
and:

We can beat up on Palin and other republicans in another thread ;)

AMEN
I see a pattern here, the same people cannot maintain focus.
I guess they are amature debaters and believe they are masters of distraction, because they try their best to do an exercise in mental masturbation.

I sat here and re read your post, and now I am really pissed off.
it is not the job of foxnews to correct her or any one else.
This is where I keep saying we have no journalists in the USA.
Their job is to report what they say, our job is to figure out if they are idiots or not.
Some one needs to spank foxnews.

LOL - hijack a thread of yours? That will never happen. I've never met another man in my entire life whose got a talent for being as single minded as you! Trust me, any interjections of mine into any thread of yours is, at best, only a temporary distraction.

Don't believe me? If you make it even another 24 hours without another anti-Obama thread I'd be shocked right down to my pink fuzzy bunny slippers. (Well, cat slippers, but nonetheless, the point remains the same)

Really? I didn't see any mention of Democrats in your OP. Looks to me like you're just ridiculing Pelosi's gaffe. I pointed out Bush made gaffes, too.

Here's how that works:
Pelosi ------> gaffe
Bush -------> gaffe
Simple, ja?

I'm sure we're all thrilled that you googled and found a web site listing logical fallacies. That's an excellent start, and I applaud your scholarship. Now comes the hard part: understanding them.

For instance, "non sequitUr" means "it does not follow". It cannot apply, as there is no argument or conclusion. I made an observation. I didn't see the need to spell out the fact that it was an observation. Evidently an erroneous assumption on my part. I will endeavor to simplify things for you in the future.

Tu quoque, or "two wrongs make a right" is also not applicable as, again, there is no argument being made.

Whether there were deliberate misdirections, or if the thread simply meandered in the way that threads do, is a matter of opinion.

Actually, HK, you failed once more.  Keep working on it.  One day you too will actually be able to hold a conversation logically if you keep trying.  And perhaps be able to argue effectively.

Your basic premise fails.  It is a red herring since you bring up something that isn't relevant to Pelosi's failings...did Bush make her misquote?

It is a tu quoque because you are implying because Bush misspoke that it is OK that Pelosi misspoke and what she said wasn't wrong because Bush did so in the past.

I might give you the non-sequitur as OK, but actually, your implication that "mountains out of molehills" makes for comedy gold in a pathetic sort of way fits fairly well.    Or were you trying to say that your post of a link to someone else's video implies amnesia?

------------------------

Talk about making mountains of shit out of molehills. You guys are comedy gold, in a pathetic sort of way.
-------------------

I won't even get started with the ad-hominen nature of your posts, since that seems to be your M.O. based on the posts of yours that I've seen.   Besides, it is obvious to anyone who reads your posts.  Ad-Hominen attacks are always a spineless resort to divert a discussion from the topic...attack the person, not the issue.

Good luck...Study hard.  Maybe you can learn to use appropriate logic.   I brought up the websites for you and others because it seems that many folks need a refresher, or perhaps a first look, since I'm not going to send all your your very own library of "The Organon" to help with simple"True/False" logic, "A Rulebook for Arguments"  so you can learn the basics of  debate or even "On Bullshit", since that seems to be a favorite of yours.

If you want to discuss logic and argument, then by all means, start a thread about it.  It might help the discussion here to become intellectually stimulating and honest.  Instead of the current emo-args that go on now.
/end off topic

So, tell us about your thoughts on Pelosi's "gaffe" regarding the number of Americans losing their jobs each month, whether the 500 million she said or the 500,000 she was corrected by Fox News.

Do you think it is nothing?  Do you feel that we really will have that many people going out of work each month?  Does it make sense?  Did she mean jobs instead of people?   Was she just fearmongering or did she have something concrete to discuss?
After all, MarketWatch is that 35,000 more were claiming joblessness, bringing it UP to 626,000 unemployed  and on unemployment.  How do either of those figures relate to losing 500(Mor K) jobs each month?  Especially from the woman who is 4th in line to be the US President and has one of the most important jobs, guiding the Congress of the United States?

Or, do you think maybe this could have been put in Humor, except for the political fallout of her pronouncement?

Talk about not getting it.
Logical fallacies apply to rhetorical arguments. I assume you had a "Composition and Rhetoric" course at some point?

When no argument is being made, no logical fallacy is committed.
Again, I will make it very simple for you (And coldwarrior, since he seems to be in love with you).
"Bush is a moron" is a statement of opinion.
"Bush is a moron because he lied to us" is an argument.

One of these years you might figure it out. Have fun! Tschüß!

       I don't like Pelosi's social outlook or the solutions she brings to the problems.  I flat out dislike the tone and 'tude she brings to the discussion (see her speech before the first bailout vote).

     This?  THIS?  This is a dumb gaffe.  Given the oratorical talents of the prior Pres., is it really something to try and score cheap points with?

     Deep breaths, guys.

     One thing I am wondering about.  Is Obama going to have the clout to smack certain loudmouth Dems in the House into line?  If our new President can't handle Charlie Rangel, Ahmadinejad is going to piss on him, and tell him it's raining.

Of course it is something to make fun of...these are the people who claim to know what's best for our country.
Who are supposed to stay abreast of the things that affect all our futures.   She's not a newbie to politics. Nor to Washington.  And by her own admission, "in charge."  And she did use that figure on two separate occasions...just was given a chance to correct her statement by Fox News, of all groups.

So yeah, we need to be able to remind her and her supporters that she can't walk on liquid water.  (Note:  Solid water even I can walk on...some in the back yard right now!)

She needs to take care with what she says and what she does.  Especially at these times, if she wants her credibility to have value.   Otherwise she becomes the buffoon as various media and entertainment outlets beat up on her errors.   Imagine what Saturday Night Live could do if it wanted to do a sketch on this kind of thing.  It feeds Conservative Talk Radio.

And distracts from the real issues and the scope of those issues we face.

        Your first and last sentences seem a bit contradictory.  Not to mention what happens when something real comes along, and everybody is sick of hearing "wolf."

If I remember correctly US lost about 500,000 jobs in December 2008. Poor Nancy, everybody can have such a slip of tongue. There are many much more substantive issues Nancy Pelosi can be attacked for.

Of course, when you miss the middle, sure.  That's true of many writings.  That whole out of context" thing.

Let's reverse it....we face some serious issues and one of the main architects of a plan plan to solve them makes a gaffe.   What better way to help them get back on track than to pointedly out to them  that they are being watched.  So that they take it into consideration when they plan.  That they know they can't get away with anything, since they and their ideas are under scrutiny.

It is a time-honored method of our US political system.  Consider this from 1800:

"Jeffersonian Republicans (present-day Democrats) successfully challenged the single-party Government of the Federalists in a bitterly fought campaign between Jefferson and Federalist John Adams. It was the 1st election to employ name-calling-Adams was called a madman, warmonger, spendthrift; Jefferson was characterized as a radical revolutionary just waiting to set up a military dictatorship, and to confiscate all Bibles and replace them with his own version thereof." -- http://www.trivia-library.com/a/united-states-and-american-history-1800.htm

Humor, name-calling (shrub, chimp, B.O., Stinky), are all ways that, while not "fair fighting" are still ways to get someone's attention.  Beats a 2x4 between the eyes, a real knife it the back or bullet through the heart, though.

It would be nice to be able to elevate the discussion, as I've alluded to above...just doesn't seem possible with some folk.
