What is the true meaning of sex. Some would say reproduction. Others would say intimacy. Still others would say fun. There are very few (if any) things that people agree on. The "true" meaning of sex is definately not one of them.
Also, I'm more inclined to attribute the popularity of fetishes to freedom than opression. I'm willing to bet that their are just as many BDSM freaks (for example) in the Muslim world as there are in the Western world. It's just that if you live in a society where going outdoors without out a veil is enough to bring the wrath of the law down on you, how much chance do you have of going to the local play dungeon (or for that matter, even having a local play dungeon you can go to)?

And just where did those Puritan freaks come from? This is a very large, very diverse nation. Puritanism is just one one aspect of it. One aspect out of many. Don't let your biases cause you to focus on only a few aspects while leaving you blind to all the others.
LAM (to get things back on topic here), I've never heard of Joe Torre until you brought him up (baseball bores me and I know next to nothing about it) but based on what I read... Yup... He's an asshole.
