Every state will have different laws. Where I used to live it was quite legal to carry a gun in a car. What was illegal was for that weapon to be hidden unless you were licensed for concealed carry. The only time I was stopped with a gun in the car was for a seat belt violation. Yeah, I don't wear them much. Cop stops me. Comes to the car. First thing I tell him is that I have a weapon in the car. Not the second thing, nor the third, the first. I didn't want him seeing it before I told him, didn't want him "finding it", or anything else. The stop went well. He didn't even write me a ticket. Cops are people, albeit people who have been taught to look for suspicious things and suspicious actions. They're also people who have to consider every car they approach might be the one where a gun is pulled or used. Being calm, showing respect generally defuses most of that upfront. And sometimes, you may have to defuse the situation up front. It's not the time to get into a pissing contest. To the OP, if judges and legislators don't kill the amendments outright, society will. Anyone who served in the military knows that you swear to defend the Constitution from all enemies, foriegn and domestic. I tend to think we have a lot less to fear from foreign agencies than we do those that operate within our own borders and are either damned well intent on protecting us from ourselves, or deciding what is appropriate for one to think and say. There's more outcry over someone being offended these days than someone committing treason.
