Funny, it didn't help me get a job that I had applied for many years ago.
Being a Coast Guard veteran got me that job.
All the lady who was interviewing me wanted to talk about was what I did in the Coast Guard!
Says me; "Oh, I have a degree in Business Administration."
Says she; "That's nice, so what else did you do in the Coast Guard?"
She couldn't have cared less about my degree.
And on my first day on the job my boss told me,"forget whatever they taught you in college, we're going to teach you *our* way and they did.
I thought to myself; Shit! I think I just wasted four years of my life!"
Given the choice between the two I think I'd rather be a military veteran than only have a college degree.
Look at all the govt. jobs these days that "require" a degree.
Twenty years ago those jobs were "secretarial" jobs!
Today they pay $80k and have "titles" but, they're still "secretarial" jobs, paperpushing jobs.
It's called "feathering your nest." Bueracracy run wild!
Those jobs should be paying $40k per year and no "titles."
They simply don't "require" a degree to do them!
I do think that all this "degree" stuff has obviously gotten out of control.
If colleges and unis had their way *everyone* would have a "degree" and there'd be no-one to empty the wastebaskets and mop the floor.
And, most importantly there's *the law of supply and demand.*
This economy will chug along very nicely on having 20% of the populace being college educated.
We simply don't need 50-60% of the population having a degree.
Where are the jobs for them?
We put a man on the moon when only 15% of high school grads went on to college.
For every 100,000 blue collar workers we lose we also lose 30-40,000 white collar jobs. We really do need to get out of these "free trade" deals!
As I've said before I could take out an ad in the paper for 100 house painters and I garauntee you 30-40% of the respondants are going to have degrees in sociology, psychology and political science.
As for me, I'll be doing this for my own knowledge and to review a lot of things that I've simply forgotten over the decades.
I think we really do need refresher courses as we get older just to maintain our skills and also we need to keep learning new things to keep our minds sharp.
