I'm so glad Obama's trying to reach out to Muslims.  It's very refreshing to see a US President takes steps like this.

It may help with the marginal ones.
But, I seriously doubt it will have any effect on the al qeada types.
I'd rather see him "reaching out" to Americans who are stuck working for substandard wages.

I seriously doubt this, too - but that's not really the point. The tiny minority of 'Al Qaeda types' are a lost cause. It's the vast majority of moderate Muslims that we need to build a bridge with.

i think reaching out to the middle-of-the-road people is a great idea. it doesn't take much to send someone down a good road or a "bad" road. and i think by attempting to bridge the gap between "us and them" there will be fewer of them going the al qaeda route.
there isn't much we can do about them, but i think reaching out to the ones who AREN'T at that point would help keep some of them from getting there.

Agreed as long as it's done with dialogue and not Tax Dollars.
That never works and those things always seem to become "permanent."

I am glad that he is reaching out to Muslim moderates who are the majority and not violent like Al Qaeda or the Taliban. The actions of the violent extremists have caused heavy casualties in the civilian
populations around the world are those people sick of the suicide bombings and fighting and assassinations.
 
The U.S. needs to start an open dialogue with the Muslim world and President Obama is going about this in the right way.

It's always good to have a leader that can understand the benefits of diplomacy over physical force.

I think he will be better received, especially if he's about to come from an angle of cultural and religious understanding without acting as if he's having to handle people lacking rationality with a trigger fuse. (Which is how the West in general has treated the Muslim/Arab population since our War of- I mean ON Terror has begun)

...despite what some may think, by closing Gitmo and this latest initiative, Obama has probably reduced the number of terrorists in the next generation by more than 50%. It's all very well being safe today, but being safe tomorrow is a good thing too.

Bill Clinton already tried this approach; it didn't work.  Obama can kiss up to these people all he wants.  It isn't going to make any significant difference.

I'm having mixed feelings about this move. I suppose it can't hurt, but I'm glad that he clarified that we back Israel and always will, as he reached out ..

I think the best thing to do with President Obama is simply to watch him closely. Maybe over time, I'll feel more secure and comfortable with him. I don't know him right now and since I didn't vote for him, my confidence in him is wary and uncertain. Time will tell, I guess.

I think most of us would agree that Obama reaching out to muslim moderates has always been  a good thing. It continues work that other administrations have tried over the years in Iran, Indonesia, and Pakistan. Where he would go wrong, in my view, is if he initiated talks with the extremists in Iran withhout pre-conditions as he suggested during the primary.  However, the campaign is over and now HE has the reponsibility. He is President and  I'm also willing to give him time but watch him closely.  My biggest concern at the moment is not Obama but Pelosi and Reid who represent the extreme example of the "Peter Principle".

I don't just think it's the right choice, I think it's the ONLY choice.  We can't keep putting our noses in the air and pretending we are better than everyone else.  He might not be able to reach the fanatical, militant muslims (no one seems to be able to reach those people in ANY religion), but by beginning to heal the rift perhaps he can curb their growth and influence. It's a start.
