Status: offline 		Google's Rumored GDrive May 'Kill' the PC
The GDrive, unconfirmed by Google, is reported to launch this year, with tech news sites calling it the "most anticipated Google product so far." The Google drive would shift away from Microsoft Window's operating system, in favor of "cloud computing," where storage and processing is done in data centers. Users would no longer have to rely on their computers' powerful hard drives.

Status: offline 		I don't either J, but as technology marches on so do we.  When the technology we like just goes away.

No matter what if I am traveling on business I'm going to have to have a computer with me.  That is unless everywhere I go has one
I could use.  Just don't see that happening anytime soon.  If I have to have my own computer with me, why not have my own software, etc?

Status: offline 		This sounds like an expansion of a product AT&T marketed about 15 years ago where just the storage was handled in a data center, and this even refers to it as "cloud computing" like they did too.

Status: offline 		I actually like the idea of cloud computing.  But then again, I'm not resistant to change like so many technophiles I meet.  I'm also not paranoid about my privacy. 

I don't like having to keep up with constant changes in computers.  I don't like having to figure out technical crap that I don't understand when I want to purchase a PC or need it repaired.  It would be great to have something simpler.  I like the fact that so many applications can be found for free through cloud computing.  I like not having to backup all my files, and that my files are accessible anywhere with an internet connection.  It's a good idea.  But chill out, it's not going to destroy the PC.

Me, I have tons of downloaded mp3s on the desktop, but none on my new computer.

Status: offline 		Flying Cars folks this is the Flying Car Issue. The Idea is taking a dimension to a product that is not yet there. If we all had flying cars how owuld you regulate traffic and maintain order. The issue here is if everything is done in Data Centers what is the protection as now Hundreds of Thousands of computers will now share a processor and the information that it would process would have to be cashe stores somewhere who protects that? What happens if there is a Failure. Many people don't care about these questions and this is how I ended up with a Zen MP3 Player and when it broke I was SOL.

I am sure it will catch on to a core group of people just as Mac and Linux have.

Kill the PC? I dount it for the shear number of illegal stuff in the net alone the PC will be around for many many many more years it will just be packaged differently.

Google already has an online office suite....so an online o.s. will be a nice next step.
For companies it will be a nice solution.

I prefer to keep my stuff nicely local.

Status: offline 		cloud computing, aka application servers etc., is an idea that has been just about to take off for a decade. It's not going to become predominant for a very good reason, most computers aren't used for business productivity applications exclusively. Someone might buy a subscription for a word processor application but they will still want to play games, surf the web, stream videos etc. which don't work well under a cloud computing model.

Status: offline 		I love the concept and I cant wait for the roll out. I am sick of carrying around my laptop when travelling. What the G drive means to me is that I can buy one of those real small and light laptops and use it for travel (cutting out back and shoulder ache!) and still have access to all my documents (with out the bother of backing up everything to a USB key etc). I am just in the process of moving all my email to googlemail server so that I can access my Outlook from any computer. Happy days! Mega cloud computing fan here and I dont give a shit about paranoia!

and besides potentially illegal stuff some people have, what about totally personal files? would you want to put them in a place that others can have potential access to them via a hack or an unscrupulous network admin?

I dread the idea of 'Cloud Computing' for anything more than basic web-browsing and document storage.

Do you want *everything* on your computer available online for anyone who can crack your password? For the government to see with a simple subpoena? What if someone (illegally) installs a key-logger on a public computer? Bam, they have access to your computer and personal everything.

I'm not usually a privacy grasper, but in this case it makes me very uncomfortable. As a writer I keep copies of my current projects on my computer, as well as projects for friends that I'm alpha/beta reading/editing. Some are finished... do I really want to have my own intellectual property up on the internet, in a place where, if it's stolen, I'll have no legal proof it was mine when/if someone else profits from it?

Not to mention the capabilities for identity theft.

Before it becomes really big, laws are going to need to be brought up to date (pretty much around the world) to match the technology. Likewise, it seems dangerous to me to have it done through a third-party. What if they go bankrupt and shut everything down? Do you just lose... everything, with no chance to get it back?

No, I prefer local computers, thanks.

Status: offline 		What's on my hard drive stays on my hard drive (or my external, back up drive).  Sure, I'm going to store all my finances in a place where I am not the only one who has access to them *cough*, Or my legal documents.  Or my photos. Or all my music.  Or my work documents.  Nope, my laptop is light enough to carry around and my external hard drive has an auto-back up feature so all I need to do is plug it in.

Overhere..somewhere in the netherlands.. we go to docsis 3 anysoon. I already download with 2,5 megabyte per second( ~20Mbps). They expect this year to be at 6 megabyte per second. And with that we are still behind on scandinavia...where that speed was reached years ago.
For the next few years they see room enough to raise speeds more.
