Every place has "the hottest new movies", the "hottest new albums, (or videos) " and so forth. My buddy can get new movies, in some cases before they hit the theaters.

Well that's not what I want. I want old stuff. I already have a pretty good collection and will have more once this HD issue is cleared up. I actually did get another eighty to throw in there but they just won't work at the same time. But sometime this year I will probably pick up at least a 200GB. Then I can just clone to it and then [heaven forbid] finally defrag, because I actually don't have the freespace to do it right now.

At any rate, I want old TV shows, movies, obscure ones like some of the really corny scifi. All I have to have is decent enough quality to blow it up to my 36" screen and I will be happy. Even some of the old commercials for nostalgia's sake.

Now from what I've read, and correct me if I am wrong, these P2P programs whether Bearshare or Undernet or whatever, still access some kind of gnutella network. Or are there different networks ?

Problem with me is I don't like the new stuff.  I don't like the camera work in the best of scenarios and I find the effects to be too much. I can't think of a remake I ever liked, except for a few songs. Remade TV shows and movies are terrible IMO. What's more, sometimes I go searching for an old movie, only to find out I downloaded the (ugh) remake.

What's more is I want the file to do with as I please, not streaming. I want to be able to transfer it to another PC on the network or burn it to DVDROM, maybe even make an actual playable DVD from it.

I know you can't always get what you want, but if there is such a place I would like to know about it.

I get the new movies. Try a rental store. Sometimes they have the old classics.

IF they still make those then

1 terabyte costs 70 euro's or so...so why keep it small.

Bittorrent is a good way indeed..... just look for the 2 biggests trackers..they have most. (pirates in a bay and a mini nova )
Or get Bit Che a bittorrent search engine

Emule is not bad too.....just not as fast as bittorrent...but lots of things to pick from.

You can get an abbo on usenet or similar.

I prefer forums/blogs with rapidshare or megashare links

Piker.    I'm on a slow connection, and download close to 400 GB a month.  My video server has about 10 TB right now.  Let's talk about Sun's ZFS (Zettabyte File System ). for safety.

Your library. You would not believe what music and movies available for check out.  Many libraries have online card catalogues, so you browse what's available from home first.

I like the older stuff, too. What I can't stand is switching from one POV to another every half-second. I can't describe what I mean right now; I can't think of a good example. But it's really fucking irritating. It's a cliche-gimmick for lazy, unimaginative directors who all went to the same classes at UCLA.  The ones with the 2.3 GPA.

I'll have to check out those options, thanks all.

HK, I know what you mean, it is hard to put one's finger on it. Sometimes is seems like they want the piece to look like it was filmed by an amateur. Something like that.

I notice that a lot too on the old TV shows I burn to DVD off some of the cable channels. I think that for the most part, it was a matter of the directors trying to figure out how to use this new medium, television. I see a lot of experimenting going on in some of those older shows.

Panda, I saw a documentary on the making of the original Twilight Zone series. It was fascinating. The first episode Galaxy Man, I think was such a low budget producers would be drooling on their shoes today. The alien was in a wetsuit with oil and tranny grease poured all over it.

During at least the first season, they said the staff had to come up with something new each and every week because they had no episodes premade and stored up.

An interesting irony if y'all like irony. It seems that lack of color TV actually OPENED up a dimension for them when it came to special effects. The docu described how many of them were done with simple household items.

Seems like that type of creativity has largely been lost.

Aw, Term, I would love to see that. I'm a huge Twilight Zone fan. Of the original 156 episodes, I've got about 145 or 146 on DVD. It's a bit of a mixed bag (the bad ones are really pretty embarrassing), but the good ones still represent some of the best television ever produced. I'm going to really be keeping an eye out for that documentary. Thanks for the heads-up!

Yeah, you have a straight-on shot followed a second later by a shot looking down at the action followed a second later by one lookung up from the POV of a shoe... It's like watching a really irritating strobe.

What I find interesting about watching some of them is that you can see the directors were approaching it from the perspective of directing a play on television. The writers were still thinking like playwrights, and the directors were still thinking like theatre directors. They were trying to use the technology of the new medium to achieve effects that weren't possible in a traditional stage setting, and their technique was constrained by continuing to think inside the old paradigm. They were thinking of the television set as a stage. Once they broke out of that old paradigm, and started to understand that it was an entirely new medium, you could see the huge shift in their techniques, but the transitional period of the late 50s to mid 60s did have some growing pains. Kind of amusing to watch some of them now, with that in mind.
