As for the boiler itself, the actual power supply leads from the boiler into our electrical supply, but there is another cable coming from that and leading into their attic - and I can think of no other logical reason for it other than to assume they're tapping into our supply

The boiler would require a power source and a thermostat to control when it goes on and off. Could it be that the wire that goes into the party wall is the control cable for a thermostat located on the other side which is no longer used? i.e. are the flats converted from a single house type thing where the boiler originally supplied both areas?

Hi, Owner, we're going to do that in any case first thing, as well as telephone the electrical company that deals with our supply. As this work was done under the freeholder's instructions, we wondered if there could be any other logical explanation for the wires running through the neighbor's attic space.

Thanks for replying, Owner.

Try turning everything off,and I mean EVERYTHING.Clocks, wall chargers, anything that`ll make the meter turn.

Then check the meter. If it`s dead still, then you know at least that those mystery wires are not powering your neighbors lights and stuff.

I`ve heard of cross wiring between dwellings, rare but it happens. Also, cheap ass landlords will sometimes wire the common spaces and hallways of a building into a tenant/coop owner`s system. In essence, stealing power.

Do the test and don`t worry about them otherwise.

If the wiring job looks dodgy, chances are it is and that in a roof space withall that dry material is a fire waiting to happen. If the wiring is for the purpose of stealing electricity, your neighbour is not only endangering their own lives, but yours as well, as fire in a roof space spreads fast and burns down as well as up.

Me what I would do is say nothing, but get in the relevant authorities starting with a registered electrician, electrical engineer  or/and  your electricity supplier's  own workers. Get them to do a report on it, depending on the advice  of  the electrical people, see if you can get a fire inspector in or building standards people, (good idea, tidy your own roof space first).  Get as much information as is possible  to bolster your own case then have the fire hazard disconnected, if it is a fire hazard, that is a priority, your life. then take action from there. Get the wire cut short so it cannot be reconnected.

The chances are, if your neighbours are stealing your electricity and their power suddenly goes off, sure as like they will be up there to see what is going on, especially if the power is being used to drive arc lights for the growing of plants, their enterprise will demand it.

If you do suspect the growing of plants, a tip off in the appropriate direction for the sheer audacity of stealing from you might get their door kicked in and a visit from the fuzz.

As to the costs for the electricity used, once it is proved the electricity is being stolen, the energy company should write it off as far as you are concerned.

I had a situation similar in a rented property, our electricity bills were through the roof, and our phone bills, calls to places where we knew no one, Poland no less. One day I followed wires and found a wire running down to a car repair shop at the bottom of the garden. Looking over the fence I could see welding equipment being used and arc lights burning, a veritable industry going on there with a guy restoring old cars. Interesting that the electricity cable had another wire wrapped around it, that must be the telephone cable. On my side of the fence where the cable entered our wall there was an electrical switch, so I found the telephone jack and disconnected that and waited until nightfall where I knew the workshop was being used, the welding arc flashing and sounds of grinders cutting, the place lit up like a football stadium. Myself and my ex manned the switch and had tremendous fun switching it on and off at intervals all night, just hear the machines start up again and off went the power. Eventually they were looking over our fence, they knew where the power came from and it turned out to be the owner of the property we had rented, he was knowingly stealing our electricity and phone. The next day, the police and electricians were there to sort the business out and it turned out a previous tennant had ran up debts due to the unbelievably high power consumption there, we made it our duty to find all the ex tennants and let them know what was going on. Overmuch perhaps, but I am a scorpio, someone crosses me, I go for it big time.

MM I had that happen to me when I rented. The person knew what was happening and just laughed at it. I moved out and let the owner get stuck with the bill.

Our property is owned, not rented, so no moonlight flit for us, mi amor. I see a little of James Dean in you... (I'm not talking death) makes you all the more attractive.

Thanks to all that have taken the time to reply to me. The electricians (from a reputable firm) have just left my property. The cables through the loft seem benign to them and the way the wiring in the attic was done, there's no other route for them to go but via the neighbour's attic, but there's no real way of telling unless they have access to their side of the loft - it's just very unlikely that they are tapping into a cable. After testing everything it turns out that the likeliest culprit was a faulty oil heater of ours, which is pretty old. After isolating the source to the heater they worked out that it's costing us approx. £2 to £2.50 to run EVERY HOUR that it's on - so the heater's now gone and I'm now wearing a clean pair of underwear!

easy fix.  cut ALL of your power.

then wait for them to complain.   if they dont act any differently then the bill is all yours.

Dnomyar -> RE: Calling All Electricians - Advice Needed (1/26/2009 8:13:07 AM)

clean underware.  Now you tell us.

GreedyTop -> RE: Calling All Electricians - Advice Needed (1/26/2009 8:26:01 AM)

MissM... you wear underwear?

*disillusioned*

MissMorrigan -> RE: Calling All Electricians - Advice Needed (1/26/2009 8:36:53 AM)

I did today incase I  had to go up the ladder into the loft... Didn't want the poor bastard underneath fainting and letting go of the ladder, hon.

In all honesty, I'm a good girl, I wear clean underwear daily and every grandmother wants their grandson to marry me as they think I'd be the perfect christian wife for them - I'm an atheist, so what does that tell ya, greedy me ole mucker?

How's the man, how's you? How's the bed, ya broken it in fully yet? You're going ot HATE the bloody cold here, Greedy! wait til the winter hits ya here, you'll be wearing thermals that Pirate will have to forcibly remove in order to get his conjugals lol

GreedyTop -> RE: Calling All Electricians - Advice Needed (1/26/2009 8:41:58 AM)

I expect his body will provide me the warmth I need :)

Glad you're getting the electricity sortyed, MissM :)

MissMorrigan -> RE: Calling All Electricians - Advice Needed (1/26/2009 8:54:43 AM)

That is so romantic! Wait til ya experience a British winter... where people wake up with pubic hairs frozen together (we deliberately grow them to prevent skin tears), where icicles form on the upper lip overnight, where wearing something to bed is no longer an option but a necessity and where eveyrthing is done at double speed to generate some body heat - polyamorous relationships  are also a must.
