How much time are you going to be there? Having been born there in the South Bay and lived there many years, I can tell you that there is a TON of things to do and places to see. If you're going to be in The City proper, check out some of the various districts that have such wonderful history and personality like the Castro or Haight-Ashbury. Visit Fishermen's Wharf and have fresh out of the oven San Francisco sourdough bread. Visit Ghiradelli Chocolates if you love chocolate. If you enjoy wine, you can go either north or south for some fabulous wine tasting. Napa or Sonoma counties north of SF have great wineries as well as if you go south to Santa Clara, San Benito or Santa Cruz counties. (If you go south, check out the Winchester House in San Jose or the Tech Museum, since it's the heart of Silicon Valley.) For wineries, I really recommend Bargetto Winery in Soquel, just south of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is a fantastic place on it's own, and it's on the way as you head down the coast to Monterey. They have a wonderful assortment of reds and white, in addition they are the winery that makes the world-famous Chaucer's Mead. They have the most delicious dessert fruit wines as well. Try the Ollalieberry or Raspberry wines, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... paired with chocolate, you can't go wrong! And of course, all this is on top of Alcatraz, the clubs and great restaurants. I lived there for many years and was still finding new things to do all the time. It's a great area.
