MDragonfly -> Depression Article (1/20/2009 4:34:09 PM)

Hello All,
I am Katherine, Madam Dragonfly from the Albany, New York area. I am in the process of writing an article about depression in lifestyle dominant individuals. I am not sure what direction the article will take but I am soliciting anecdotes from others with regards to their own personal experiences with this mental illness. I would like input from both dominant and submissive types, as well as those in and out of relationships. I am looking for input on how it affected your dynamics and strategies that you and your partners used to deal with the situation. Privacy will be respected, I will only quote from a story if ok’d by the writer and their partner(s) and then only with pseudonyms.
I believe the article will provide insight and strategies to others as well as providing a way for me to examine my own feelings and issues with regards to my own depression. I will be collecting material until the end of February 2009. Any anecdotes can be emailed to me here
.
Thank you for your time.
Katherine

It means he has to be sensitive to my moods, just as I have to be sensitive to his. Just like in any other healthy relationship.

Specifically, it means I won't be very orgasmic when I'm feeling sad. Doesn't mean I am not willing to make him happy, but he has to accept it if I can't orgasm.

What is more intrusive is my anxiety disorder. When that acts up I have to have the right to refuse him because forcing me through it sets off a bad episode.

None of this is a big deal, it just means we have to be clear communicators. I have had to learn to say that I'm feeling very anxious and can't play but need him to cuddle me.
However, I've gotten help. I've been treated for the depression. I have a therapist. I know how to manage my moods. And that's the bottom line for anyone of any gender or orientation: do the appropriate things. See a good doctor. Find a competent therapist. Learn how to cope. And communicate all of this.

Just to clarify, are you only looking for responses from dominant oriented people? Not submissives, correct?

Also, I'm curious what you're writing this for...academic, personal use, bdsm educational, etc?

Sorry, missed that you wanted to know about dominants only. I'm a sub. But the same thing applies in any relationship. If this is a clinical depression, you need to get it treated. Medication and therapy and learning effective self coping mechanisms. Plus staying on top of the physical needs; sleep, water, food. No alcohol. And you need to be committed to getting well if you want your partner to stay with you.

You didn't miss anything. She said in the OP  "I would like input from both dominant and submissive types, as well as those in and out of relationships"

I believe that it is common for both Domme and sub to experience  a degree of depression after a particularly enjoyable union. With the intense UP of endorphin release etc, a balancing down may often occur for the following 2 or 3 days. I often expect it and tell my sub to anticipate such and just gently work through it.

Yes, but the article is about "depression in lifestyle dominant individuals", not "depression in lifestyle submissive individuals".

i am wondering if you are looking at depression in the form of a chemical imbalance. Does the endorphin release in some way contribute to a decrease of serotonin, an increase of the uptake, etc? If so...i can try to find an article i have about this.

Sorry, I read Dominasmartass's post and misread Des's.

OP -- Do you mean depression, as in a recognised medical condition such as "clinical depression" or "seasonal affective disorder" or "bipolar disorder", or do you mean the complex of emotions and physical reactions known in the vernacular as "sub drop" and "top drop"?
