DominaSmartass -> I feel compelled to ask..."Did you read the &%$% OP?" (1/16/2009 5:56:30 PM)

Jumping off other "I feel compelled to ask" threads, I have to ask you all have you ever read through something and seen people's responses and they have little or nothing to do with the OP/thread topic?

Do you feel the need to point out their obvious oversight to them? Or just keep going, disregarding their post?

DesFIP -> RE: I feel compelled to ask..."Did you read the &%$% OP?" (1/16/2009 5:59:53 PM)

Frequently the thread takes a different turn around the bottom of page two. Sometimes even earlier. But that's how conversations between friends go, you start discussing what kind of pizza to order and wind up arguing over Grissom leaving CSI. People tend to digress.

Personally, as this is an open forum board, while it is nice to stay within the given topic, as in any  r/l r/t conversation it can take on an entirely different direction depending on the folks varied responses.

Then again, too often i see posters coming on to tell other posters what it is acceptable to post, when it is or is not acceptable to post, ordering them to stick to the OP, ordering them to cease and desist because they do not care for the content of their posts or calling them names or questioning their character due to what they have posted.

If you do not care for a subject because you consider it to be too personal, do not care for the contents or the poster, just quit reading it.

Posting to tell any given poster that their post is inappropriate or childish or overdone is a job for the mods, not for other posters.

You cannot control (other than moderation) what other people choose to post. It's noticable that things go off on a tangent because it is a forum board and you can read what was said before. I don't see people whinging about tangents in real life discussion.
My opinion is if you can't handle thread hijacks or tangents on a thread you create don't start threads. Or you could just ignore the hijacks / tangents and read the posts and respond to the ones which are related.
I really can't understand why people get their knickers in such a twist about stuff like this.

Well said misst. Quite often a topic discussion will bring up other points which are related to the OP, it may not be specific to the question but it is related: just like a verbal conversation between people. Still a mite ticked that Gris left CSI.

There was a hilarious example a while back in the Mistress forum, something to do with whether or not men were necessary. Really separated the readers from the non.
I just ignore them. I've been on teh Intarwebs for too long not to.

I thought we had gone off topic there but we haven't [:D]
The link is that it is a crime to go off topic according to this thread and that CSI is about crime. Bingo - do i get a prize?

Knickers are the root of all evil. Without them we wouldn't be able to get them in a twist and noone would care that things went off topic [;)]

I read it and move onto the next post. Why make a big deal about it? If you don't like what someone has written just skip it and move on.

Oooopppsssss...hijacking again, my apologies to the OP.

Nah, i really don't wear them because anything that close to my parts is misinterpreted as a party invitation.

Loliita -> RE: I feel compelled to ask..."Did you read the &%$% OP?" (1/16/2009 7:48:34 PM)

Is anyone else watching Battlestar Galactica? I'm not into science fiction but I enjoy this show. it's different.

LOL....

I know what you mean DominaSmartass. What bothers me is when people make your op say what they want it to say rather then what it really says. I'm new here but I've been on non kink related forums before and I see this all the time.

CdnExplorer -> RE: I feel compelled to ask..."Did you read the &%$% OP?" (1/16/2009 8:03:13 PM)

That drives me nuts Loliita, especially when what they want it to say is a foundation for them to launch an attack against the OP. It's like if they can't find anybody who deserves to be ripped apart they'll twist things around so that someone fits the bill. It's a kind of negativity I find hard to stomach.

marie2 -> RE: I feel compelled to ask..."Did you read the &%$% OP?" (1/16/2009 8:11:12 PM)

I read the OP.  But sometimes I don't read the subsequent posts.  Sometimes I say something and post, then skim back over the other responses and realize someone already made the same point.

I know what you mean, I think.  It's not so much about the tangental stuff, as it is about people who just jump in and post something to the OP without having read it.   And you can usually tell because they're refering to something vehemently that wasn't even part of the OP but rather a sentence or two they picked up from the responses, then they piece it together but they have it all backwards.

DominaSmartass -> RE: I feel compelled to ask..."Did you read the &%$% OP?" (1/16/2009 9:34:00 PM)

All good points, but not really what I was asking. I should have been more clear or given an example. For example... ;)

If an OP says, "This happened to a friend of mine and I'm trying to be supportive and what would you do in this situation"

and then a poster or many posters down the line reply with "I can't believe you did this/let someone do this to you" and so on and so forth, completely ignoring the context of the OP... that's what I mean.

ETA: FR - not actually in response to Marie2 because you did in fact interpret my OP in the way that I intended. As did Lolita and CdnExplorer. The rest of y'as, out with ye!
