MzMia -> Thoughts on Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary? (1/14/2009 3:45:24 PM)

Should the fox be guarding the hen house?
I am not real sure about how I feel about Timothy Geithner these days.

Should someone that "forgets" to pay his taxes be the Treasury Secretary?

The jury is still out for me about this man.
I DO want to see him have to pay a big fat stiff penalty like all of us would have to do.
Geithner mess has to be resolved now - CNNMoney.com Talkback

Let it be known, even though I certainly am an Obama supporter, I don't blindly accept
every move or decision he makes.
Anyone else thinking a little bit about foxes guarding hen houses when it comes to Geithner?

It is very important post and Wall Street, bankers, and US Congress can not give it to a person they can not trust (meaning high level corruption should be preserved). This leaves probably only a very small pool of high ranking professionals who are part of the elite to be considered. As all of them are involved in some kind of fraud Geithner stealing just a small amount of money (according their standards) may be the best candidate.

Sure - He's a monetarist and a Kissinger protege. Need I say more....?[;)]

In all honesty Mia, your gut feelings have not betrayed you ; Geithner is a disciple of the ''Night of the long knives'' unfettered free-trade/free-marketeering/neo-liberal school of thought, which is usually unaligned with your more non-traditional, neo-republican type administrations.

Anyways....like I've always said from day one - It's not Obama that I dislike, its all the phony, white-shoed, hundred-dollar-haircut crackers from Wall Street that surround him and have plagued his candidacy from the onset.

The man is an embarrassment to the Obama administration.  Richardson and now him..who's next?  I guess the vetting process focused more on sins of the flesh (with good reason given the history) when they should have also asked about "inadvertent" hirings of illegals or "inadvertent" failing to file proper taxes for four years! And this by the man who is being asked to serve as Treasurer of the United States and "big boss" of the IRS.  Gimme a break!

I think a new set of candidates for that position need to be vetted and recommended.

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses.
MAYBE, he is the best person for the job!

He appears to only be guilty of a few "mistakes".[;)]
Given the current DIRE economic
situation, IF he is the best person that can be found for the position, so be it.

Seems to me that any one up for the position should have paid their taxes, at a minimum.  Seriously.  Are we now at a point where the "best" we have for a job can't do what millions of Americans do?  The amount of penalties and liens that would be placed on the average Joe Schmoo if he attempted what has occured here would be mindblowing.  And this guy's gonna get rewarded with a nice big paycheck from the American people (the ones he's screwing, by the way) and have his tax problem swept under the carpet.  It's all very sad.

edited to add...I was keeping an open mind with Obama and his ideas of "change".  If this is his definition then we're fucked.  Same shit.  Different guy.

Lucylastic -> RE: Thoughts on Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary? (1/15/2009 5:17:40 AM)

definitely a dodgy option

servantforuse -> RE: Thoughts on Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary? (1/15/2009 6:08:02 AM)

This is the " change " that all of the democrats voted for. Those taxes were not paid until he got nominated. What a joke..

Even Jim Cramer on "Mad Money" doesn't like him for any number of reasons!
No, he needs to hop the "C" bus into obscurity.

...BUT-  there was no way ..e could have known.    and it will never happen again.
with him being uneducated, not a product of the school system. why would we think he is to pay taxes?   I swear (gag) the GOP stops at nothing in the name of partissanship.  glunk.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Hi Mia

I agree with Aileen- if this guy is the best we can do- better get a shovel- a big one.  We're in deep sh*t.  I'd rather find somebody a little bit lower profile and a bit more honest.  These guys have got to set an example, otherwise, why should any of us pay our taxes?  If the candidate for treasury secretary can't publish his/her returns from the last 20 years- maybe we can post the job on Monster?

Many are going to watch Tim Giethner, to say the least.
I agree with everyone that says, "Is THIS man the best man
we can get for THIS job?"[8|]

Basically what Aileen said here. Read some bogus article the other day how his tax mistake was just so common. Yeah, let me owe what, $34,000 in back taxes, I don't think I'd be hearing the same tune.
Just a feeling there...

Clearly it was not a case of simply "forgetting" to pay:

quote:

Geithner’s Mistake on Tax Is Common, Experts Say
By TARA SIEGEL BERNARD

The question being asked around Washington on Wednesday was this: Shouldn’t the man chosen to run the United States Treasury — which oversees the Internal Revenue Service — have had a better understanding of what taxes he owed?

The Senate Finance Committee disclosed Tuesday that the Treasury nominee, Timothy F. Geithner, had failed to pay more than $34,000 in taxes for Social Security and Medicare when he was a senior official at the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2003, including a small payment in 2004 after he left.

Mr. Geithner acknowledged that he received all of the paperwork, according to committee documents. And he is familiar with payroll taxes, because he has paid them for household employees in the past, as well as for his personal consulting business.

Still, several tax experts said, it is an easy mistake for an employee of an international organization to make.

This is not your normal situation between an employer and an employee,” said Saul Brenner, a tax partner at Berdon, an accounting and advisory firm. “Did he make a mistake? Absolutely. But it appears that both he and his accountant made a mistake.”

American companies and their employees typically split payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare: each pays 6.2 percent of the employee’s gross income to cover the Social Security piece, along with an additional 1.45 percent for Medicare.

But the I.M.F. is a tax-exempt organization. Its employees who are not American citizens do not owe these taxes. Still, I.M.F. employees who are American citizens must pay these taxes, just as if they were self-employed.

Self-employed individuals are responsible for paying all of the taxes on their own, and must file an additional form with their 1040 tax return when they do so. The I.M.F pays its employees a tax allowance every three months that covers the employer’s portion of the taxes, and routinely provides employees with a quarterly breakdown of that allowance.

The Senate documents said that Mr. Geithner had prepared his own taxes in 2001 and 2002. However, an accountant reviewed his 2001 return and also failed to catch the mistake. In 2003 and 2004, he used an accountant who advised him that he was exempt from self-employment taxes.

The I.R.S. has noted that many employees of international organizations, including foreign embassies and consular offices, have made mistakes in filing their taxes. For example, an I.R.S. notice in 2006 said that up to half of such employees had incorrectly filed their tax returns, making errors like failure to pay self-employment taxes. The I.R.S. offered a one-time settlement to resolve these issues.

“There was so much confusion about these and related rules that the I.R.S. offered a settlement initiative,” said William Massey, senior tax analyst in the tax and accounting unit of Thomson Reuters. “The error is not uncommon, as the statutory provisions governing this situation are very convoluted.”

“I have read that he relied on his accountant and that could have been an easy mistake for the average accountant to make given the complexity of the code sections involving exceptions to exceptions,” Mr. Massey said.

The Senate documents indicated that Mr. Geithner had used tax software in the past, but did not make clear whether he had used it in 2001 and 2002 to prepare his returns. Even if he had used the software in those years, tax experts said the software would probably not have warned him that he was making a mistake.

Good article Cagey..thanks

It's a shame that as talented a man as Geithner could try to defraud the government (and all of us who pay these damn taxes).  To make it even more clear, the IMF "grosses up" the quarterly income for taxes.  Simply put, if you make $25,000 a quarter in income and owed an estimate of
$7,500 in taxes, the IMF would pay such an employee $32,500 so that they would NET $25,000!  Nice deal if you can get it...but I guess that
wasn't enough.  As far as pleading ignorance, every foreign employee of the IMF receives a quarterly newsletter advising them of their responsibility
to pay taxes owed.
Although I would prefer another nominee, I don't think it's a deal breaker for Geithner.  He is an experienced financial guy and the country needs that kind of person in the job.  I would suggest an anual audit of his taxes be done by the same IRS that he will be responsible to manage.  I'm more concerned about the nominee for Attorney General, but that is another thread.
