Sanity -> Bush, Obama to tag-team lawmakers for bailout cash (1/12/2009 7:06:59 AM)

Isn't this nice...

I've been saying for a while now that Obama is just "Little Bush Jr." in a lot of ways. Sure, Obama tosses the far left a bone once in a while but ya know what? So does Bush.

And the one thing that I truly can't stand about W is the fact that he's fiscally very Liberal.

Gaaa...   [sm=gaah.gif]

Here's the article:

Bush, Obama to tag-team lawmakers for bailout cash

WASHINGTON – A request for the remaining $350 billion in financial industry bailout funds could come as early as Monday as the Bush administration and President-elect Barack Obama tag-team uneasy lawmakers for the money.

A vote in Congress is likely soon, possibly this week, several senators predicted after a briefing from Obama economic adviser Larry Summers on the Wall Street bailout, as well as on Obama's separate plan for roughly $800 billion in spending and tax breaks to spur the economy.

President Bush just completed his last press conference.  With respect to the $350 billion second part of TARP he said that he would ask for it if Obama wanted him to do so...or if Obama wanted to wait for his taking over the Oval Office...He threw it totally into Obama's lap to make a decision as the next President of the country.
And you are right, Bush has been a disappointment in his fiscal policies and never using his veto to challange the Congress.

I disagree.  A classic liberal is one who expands government social services.  Bush has expanded government spending with his insane Iraqi war, with the bailout of the financial services industry, and arguably with the bridge bailout of the auto industry.

But who's getting the perks?  Not the poor and downtrodden that  a liberal would spend it on.  Instead, it's going to six figure suits that made indefensibly bad decisions and $80K/year union employees.

Bush believes in a government of the privileged, by the privileged, and for the privileged.

Just spending money big time does NOT qualify one as a liberal.

Sanity -> RE: Bush, Obama to tag-team lawmakers for bailout cash (1/12/2009 6:05:42 PM)

Are you kidding me?

Bush never vetoed a spending bill, including the huge pork-laden highway bill that included the "Bridge to Nowhere". He threw what, a hundred billion  at Katrina? He started the new prescription drug entitlement program, threw more money into the African Aids fight than any other president... the list goes on and on and on. Even his war spending was aimed at helping the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, which under any Liberal president, liberating fifty million people would be hailed as the greatest most noble Liberal-minded deeds imaginable...

Sanity, I think that you may not have gotten my point.  You seem to equate "liberal" with "big spending".  I am trying to state that liberals will fund things that meet their own aims, not just funding for the sake of spending.

Another point is that I consider the Bush/Reagan method of spending without paying for it right away (spend and borrow) to be worse than tax-and-spend because if you don't feel the pain right away, it's easier to spend more.

Sanity -> RE: Bush, Obama to tag-team lawmakers for bailout cash (1/12/2009 6:46:55 PM)

Liberals tend to believe that whatever the question, bigger government and more government spending is the answer. Free health care, free housing, subsidized this and mandated that.

Fiscal Conservatives are the exact opposite, and Bush is no fiscal Conservative.

What conservatives tend to believe, that government isn`t the answer but the problem, is what killed our economy.

I think we could have used a slightly larger financial regulatory force.

A well staffed SEC would have gone a long way towards limiting the damage.

Out-sourcing FEMA? Well we know what happened there.

All we have to do is cut Haliberton`a no-bid contracts off  and we`ll shrink gov. back to Clinton era levels.[:D]

Actually, Reagan was the first to buy without paying.  Bush elevated that to a mad rampage.

And who's to say that Bush did NOT expand the government?  He created DHS.  He used contractors such as Halliburton and Blackwater to expand the government "off the books".  Note that he did NOT expand social programs.  Just the non-social services stuff.

Sanity -> RE: Bush, Obama to tag-team lawmakers for bailout cash (1/12/2009 8:54:19 PM)

Sorry, but you're just totally wrong. Bush increased spending in every possible area, including practically every bloated social program there is.

Name one he managed to cut... I'll bet you can't do it. In fact,

quote:

President George W. Bush is now on his way to becoming the first full-term president since John Quincy Adams (1825-1829) to not veto a single bill. The result is a congress that has been completely unconstrained in satiating its appetite for pork and corporate welfare. In response, Democratic challenger John Kerry has maligned alleged spending cuts and called for even higher taxes and spending. The consequence is that we now have two parties competing to see which can grow government faster.

From the massive increases in agricultural subsidies in the farm bill of 2002, to the new Medicare prescription drug entitlement of 2003; from the 47% increase in the defense budget, to the 80% increase in education spending, George W. Bush has demonstrated that “limited government” is not part of his political vocabulary.

http://www.independent.org/newsroom/news_detail.asp?newsID=31

Please note, that includes all kinds of social programs. I don't know where you've been getting your information but you might want to try broadening the selection of reading materials you consume, or perhaps try turning the channel occasionally.

That's Bush. As for Reagan:

quote:

George W. Bush is increasingly being compared to Ronald Reagan. It's true that like Bush, Reagan came to Washington with an ambitious plan to cut taxes across-the-board and increase defense spending while containing federal spending. And Reagan, indeed, lightened the tax burden on the American people and oversaw a massive increase in defense spending. Thus, given Bush's recent push for more pro-growth tax cuts combined with increased defense spending for the war on terrorism, the analogy is tempting.

But at this stage in his presidency, Bush's dismal record on spending when measured against Reagan's nullifies that temptation. Better yet, in light of Bush's spending it looks like it would be more accurate to compare him to Jimmy Carter than to Ronald Reagan.

Let's look at the facts. Compared to the same point in Reagan's first term, not only is Bush a bigger spender than Reagan, he's a big spender in his own right. Adjusted for inflation, total spending under Bush's watch will have increased by 14 percent as opposed to 7 percent under Reagan. But more indicative of Bush's spending problem is the run-up in discretionary spending under his watch. Discretionary spending represents funds for programs that Congress has to allocate for on an annual basis and it is the type of spending that the president has the most influence over.

Now, it is true that a sizable portion of this discretionary spending goes toward national defense. Bush will have overseen a 21 percent increase for national defense -- pretty much equal to Reagan. However, the major difference between the two men is discretionary spending not related to national defense. Whereas Reagan was able to reduce non-defense discretionary outlays by 14 percent, Bush will have overseen a rise of 18 percent -- a whopping 32 percent difference between the two men.

"He used contractors such as Halliburton and Blackwater "

I hear that the private contractor/mercenary force is equal to or greater than the known number of GI`s and support staff.

Note to pseudo small-governmenters,all that counts as growth in government.

We also know that they`ve been ripping us of to the tune of billions by these connected private contractor crooks.

Damm the press for informing us about that![:D]
