I've been on Second Life for a little while now and I know that there are a lot of people there. I'm curious to know, are any of you on Secon Life? If yes, what do you think about it? What's your name there?

Oh..and feel free to add me..my name there is Erica Karu

Yes, I have an account on Second Life, a piece of land on an island alongside a lovely BDSM ranch, two slaves and more toys that I can reasonably fit in a dungeon and I and Mine are designing more all the time.  I find it is a very powerful tool for maintaining a long distance relationship IF you have a good imagination and some technical savvy. It is far superior to any chat room BDSM RP, that is certain. However like any tool, you need the patience and commitment to learn to use it properly.  It takes a month or so to really understand how to do things and I am still mastering some of the design skills even now and I have been involved nearly a year and a half.

I will say that there are a lot of folk here who do not think much of it, and all I can think is they are not doing it right.  There is more than a handful of threads concerning it, (like this one) all of which have far more comments deriding it than promoting it which tells me that people who understand Second Life and its uses are a rarity.  Don't let that stop you though.  I don't.

I was on SL for a while, and I found that most of the people there who thought they were into BDSM were just children who had no idea what they were doing, and who thought that because they called themselves a "top", that means that everyone in SL should respect them and call them Sir or Ma'am, regardless of the other person's experience or age.

So, to SL, I call bullshit. Too many children who hide behind the anonymity of the internet and the attractiveness of their avatars.

LMAO.. you say that like you only find that in second life!
Plueeeeeeeeese.
This sir maam bs is everywhere.
Second life is no different as each person in there is HUMAN, and prone to be who they are, regardless of where they choose to be that way.
SL, CM, Alt, Bondage, ect.. people will be true to form.
If they are full of bs, it doesnt start or end in an online junket.

I have met more than a few people who do this, I DO this, and have since I was not of legal age..  And I play SL, now that I am well above the age of consent.

I am on SL, under the name Azure Sharple.
Feel free to add me if you wish.  One of the clubs I belong to has offered the use of their place for special events, talks, discussions, play ect, and I am considering organizing a Singles night in February.

Well, let's face it - those who are hiding behing the internets can act any way they want and learn nothing from it. Although I love the fact that we can hang out on forums and such on the net, places like SL are nothing more than a breeding ground for childish roleplayers who sit at their keyboards and ACT like they know what they are doing, when they really have no idea what D/s is actually all about.

Now, that is not to say that there are some legit D/s players on there - but I find it not worth the effort to find the few diamons in the rough.

it is true..that it is "humans" who make it.
I guess the name..second life..is what people sometimes dislike.
Like ..and some propably do..have it as life.
I don't care..it is their life....but it sounds a little weird..a second life.
IF some one enjoys it...then it must be good for him/her.

LOL once again I state.. and you think that only happens there?
Hell man.. where have you been?  The internet is FULL of that sort of crap.  People pretend to be male, female, bi, sane..  and with nothing stopping them, they can be what they want.  Yes, I agree on that score, but I find just as many pretending online in normal forums, (lord save me from the one true wayers), as I have found there.
I do think that if YOU find it too much bother, that you should not be on SL.  And I assume that it would be the same anywhere, CM, Alt, ect.  Ferreting out the fools takes work.  I find that people are worth work, when you find one that suits.
*just my two cents*

I joined there back in June of last year under the name "Utopia Quandry" (oops I realize now I spelled quandary wrong when I signed up...ha ha). I joined at the request of someone who said it was a lot of fun but I never could get into it really and I found it a bit confusing on how to get around the place. Maybe I should check it out again.

I find it humorous to the extreme that this thread has been moved form "General BDSM Discussion" to the "Off-topic discussion" section.  I guess that the mods have weighed in with their opinion concerning whether SL is a legitimate gateway to the BDSM experience.  You would think that those who help to maintain an online community with it's own set of chatrooms would be less hostile to a virtual reality counterpart.

...but it's not real? It doesn't really have anything to do with bdsm, it's a game. Why would it be anywhere other than off topic discussion?

I would agree to an extent as I am not one who does the online submission thing.  However, in the case of SL, it is not just a game.  There are things there that can enable some degree of playing over long distances.  And if you are in a long distance relationship, those toys do work.
Look up Xcite sometime.
I heard about them a couple of years ago but didn't know how they could be real.  But all it takes is a subscription, a computer with a USB hook up, and an avatar who is equiped.  Pinch a nipple?  Yes, it can happen.  Make vibrators work, 2000 miles away?  Yep.  Want to shock someone?  There are electro stimulation devices.
People scoff, but there are people doing things which were strictly in the imagination before these.. games.

I didn't realize that moving a thread was considered hostile.

Oh but it is.  When this thread was moved to the off topic forum, what that move said was that the mods (or the mod who moved it, rather) were opposed to the idea that BDSM activities could take place within the context of a virtual environment.  Otherwise why take a thread about the practice of it in SL out of the General BDSM forum.  After all, if they considered it legitimate, then it would count as general discussion of BDSM along with the other random BDSM related topics there.  They are hostile to the concept of SL having BDSM applications and took actions to minimize the association.  The discussion of the validity of virtual environments with respect to BDSM is apparently frowned on, though not against the TOS, which is why the thread was moved and not simply deleted outright.
