One advantage of pay-to-play is that a local professional dungeon probably has a greater variety of equipment you can use on a submissive (clamps, suspension, whips, chairs, benches, etc.) and the submissive (or Domme) will likely be extremely experienced, so you can learn greatly just by play acting an hour or two with her.
The other advantage of such local professional play sites is they offer a wide variety of women whom you can pick from at will from their catalog. For example, in my local area, there are two such pay-to-play houses within a few miles of each other, http://www.thegatessm.com & http://www.backdrop.net each with a good handful of choice submissives to choose from.
Of course, the big disadvantage, by far, is the lack of any real emotional involvement - which kills the whole effect for me but if you can suspend disbelief, you can certainly have an enjoyable time while learning the ropes with a very willing and open partner. Just remember, like all pay-to-play activities, they always try to make you feel like you're superman, so, don't let your ego be built up when they tell you that you're the best they've ever seen.
