Depending on the age of your house--old ones "breathe" as they say causing the beams to expand and contract, water in pipes etc. Newer houses "settle" especially houses with wood floors, they need to settle with the changes in heat and cold---that will go away in time.

A few things we do, we have electric candles in the windows or strategic areas of the halls to create a warm glow and a night light--it makes the house cheery at night and causes a mental relaxation and can act as a deterrent to any  break ins if that's a worry--they have the ones that go off in the dawn and come on at dusk.  Also make any dramatic changes in heat or cool at least one hour before bed---then most of the creaks happen while you are watching the last of your tv or reading before bed.

Cat,

I haven't seen any really nice electric candles. Do you have any links, or the store name where you got them?
I adore candles and get the small tea lights and place them in glass or crystal containers.

Little Miss Modern, You will get used to those house-settling noises over time and soft music is a soothing way to send you into dream-land.

Re: Break-ins. I have two metal screen bolting doors. They allow air in, are hard for anyone to see in, although you can see outside easily and they block intruders. They cost around $100 and are worth their weight in gold. I asked the owner and he paid for the doors.

Good luck, please let us know how it goes, ok?

ME

It`s heat and cold,mostly.

Wood moves and it squeeks on other wood as it expands and contracts. It`s natural.

My gf`s house( during highschool) would sway in a strong wind. You could feel it.

On the 3rd floor, it was freaky-scary.

When the temperature drops dramatically below freezing into the single digits, my house makes such loud pops and cracks, some of them sound like gunshots. It scares the hell out of the generic dude that lives there (ex military and kinda noise jumpy) and the dogs.

I grew up in a big noisy old house so it's comfort sounds to me. I sleep right through it. (Unless it causes the largest dog to jump on top of me to be consoled.....Ufta!)

My wood floors are noisy, fat cat walking on em doesn't help, but it is from heat/cold and moisture. I would sleep like a rock even if there was an earthquake. I somehow wish my bed made noises though.

In my house, I am the demonic soul sucker and I am usually pretty quiet. So no.

As for the OP's house, we might need a road trip with the ghostbusters to get an accurate assessment.

Will this road trip involve alcohol?

Well duhhhhh, of course!

And Cheetos. It's not a proper road trip without alchocol and Cheetos.

Yaaa, I could even dig out my black wool cape to give a certain "rider of death" affect.

(Rider of death, or whatever that character is called..........oh yeah!!! The Grim Reaper!!)

i moved in here on october 9th, or something like that.

i'm still not used to it.  the train tracks that are a couple blocks away are quite busy at night, and with my desk facing away from the door, i feel like... weird... but i've got one of those rooms that you can only arrange one way, really-- due to the way my closet and such are set up.

i'm an easily frightened person.

i sleep just fine when my boyfriend is here... often we go to bed really early because it's the best night's sleep i get all week.

when i'm home by myself, it's a combination of being online and being scared that keep me awake.

i have a roomate, but they're never here.  when they are here, they come in and out at the oddest times, which wakes me up wondering if i've locked the door or not-- or if someone has managed to unlock it.

My bed settles-- which is the sound that freaks me out the most.  The apartment itself, I'm pretty used to, because when I lived with my parents, we moved into a brand new house and it had all kinds of settling sounds all the time.  It never bothered me.

But when I lived completely on my own in my apartment a couple years ago, I wasn't bothered by anything-- maybe I was at the stage in my life where I thought I was invincible.  I guess in that sense, being freaked out is part of growing up...

-- Aileen-- it took me like 3 hours and several episodes of "Suite Life of Zack and Cody" to get that picture out of my head... and even then, the only light off in the house last night was the one in my room... MEANIE!!!

You need a dog.

Mine keep the monsters away pretty well.

Try turning on a radio just loud enough to help cover all but the loudest noises.  I've been on my own for over 10 years now (and um-less for about 3) so am sorta used to night sounds, but every so often i still get kinda spooky and that's all that helps.

Sweet dreams.

I agree with getting a dog.  But on the rare times when she decides to bark at seemingly 'nothing' in the middle of the night it completely freaks me out!  Probably just a deer out back or something, but ... it creeps me out.
