I am looking for suggestions on purchasing a strapon for my girlfriend.  I'm looking for something that is comfortable, stays in place and has the ability to switch to different size dildos.  She wears size 14 jeans.

I think that this one is pretty nice - Terra Firma Harness.  Very adjustible and comfortable.  You can change the ring that holds the dildo, so it will accommodate virtually any size.  The straps attach to the ring holding the dildo rather than to the pad behind it, so the dildo is held in place very securely.  I prefer the two-strap design to the butt-floss design.  I think it's more comfy and secure, but that may be just me - I find that butt-floss feeling really irritating, but other women may enjoy it. 

The one I have has nylon straps rather than leather, so I can throw it in the washing machine.  I don't see the nylon version out there.  I really like the practicality of the nylon, but I suspect that most of the harness-buying public prefers the aesthetics of the leather.

Many women's accouterments are labeled "One Size Fits All".  Women know that what this actually means is, "We Only Make One Size".  That's dandy if the item is stretchy socks, gloves and hats, but for pretty much anything else, it means if you're smaller than a size 6 or larger than a size 12, it's unlikely to fit.

The FeelDoe as well as Nexus can actually be used without a harness (Though, for anything vigorous and for greater freedom of movement, I could recommend a harness).  I was displeased with the non-leather harnesses available, so I designed one myself, went to my loval bdsm shop (Chained Desires in Baltimore, MD: they may do custom work at a distance, so you can contact them if you wish), explained/sketchedout the design, and they made it for me in a thick vinyl material.  The biggest issue I've run into with off-the-rack stuff is the lack of firm buckling and items slipping.  Now, if she's okay with leather, you're more likely to be able to buy off-the-rack.  Best wishes,

Take a look at the various types, models and styles available.  I suggest both Online shopping and going in person to an adult store where you can view the products up close and talk to an employee or two.
 
You can buy the harness by itself and a separate dildoe or a kit that includes both.  Some are fabric and others are leather; size, stability and quality differ.

Doc Johnson Vac-u-loc is a great range, none budge, intact, and you can add different sized dildo attachments as you progress with your anal traning.

Also, a good leather harness is a great investment, I have snapped a few not-so-good harnesses in the past, that cannot survive the vigorous hip movements [:D]

Start small with the strap-on dildo's too, and always go for the soft, rubber latex kind, and stay clear of the hard plastic type.

The last time I went strap-on shopping, I picked out a Nexus.  Yes, it can be used with or without the harness, but I'm a harness kind of gal.  (Some tend to 'fall out' at the female end during the more aggressive encounters.)  Since I happen to enjoy watching the boys suck it, I wanted one that would be enjoyable for the mouth as well as it's main purpose.
 
The other one is a less popular brand.  It's big selling point for Me was the vibrator in the harness.  It's not a Doc Johnson's, but it does have interlock for various attachments.
 
Just a side note to the OP.  Make sure this is something the girlfriend wants.  Otherwise, it's not a gift for her, it's a gift for you.  If she doesn't want it, she's never going to use it.

Yes, actually.  It does.  Many strapon harnesses are made for people with small hips.

I have a Nexus, and will eventually get a Share, just for some variety...  I made my own harness from panties and rubber O rings.  It fits me perfectly, doesn't move, and doesn't create odd bulges the way the harnesses do.

Of course, IF I could afford a sparkly lime green harness, I would get one!

definitely discuss with your girlfriend the purchase beforehand or it will not add to your relationship. in selection consider the practicality of cleaning it as well. some need special cleaning and others are dishwasher safe. search on line for types and variety and when ever possible see on in a store as the pics don't always measure up. also consider other options like a dildo with a handle or one that mounts to a fixed object. personally i also like a tail plug it is fun to have in and play with, mine is a brown fox tail. enjoy the journey and have fun

I have the Jaguar from Aslan Leather.  It rides rather low on the hips.

It accommodates different sizes of dildos and looks VERY nice. I'm still 'tweaking' it to decide how to make it fit best - I dont really have hips so I have to cinch it way up. The entire problem may be that I'm just not shaped like the form they designed it on.
 
The Jag is VERY nicely made though!

i appreciate everyones comments.  There have been several great suggestions, i just need to decide which one to surprise her with.

As noted, we have discussed this and this is definitely something she wants to do (ALMOST more than me, almost <G>).
