kn0t4given -> pet peeves (12/27/2008 10:15:44 PM)

The most common sayings get on my nerves..... here is the number one on my list, the others are just fun ones i used to toy with when i worked in a restaurant!

I am trying to think...... this is the most common one and i am sorry you have an issue on thinking, but at least you have a problem you admit to.

Restaruant questions:
Do you have change?
A: no, your bill will always be exactly the amount of cash you have on hand!

Do you have water?
A: no, we don't wash dishes, wash our hands, mop, clean vegetables, have ice, serve coffee, or flush the toilets... but let me run out to the well and get you that glass of water!

Do you have the time?
A:  no, i am really busy right now standing here having the most erotic daydream!

Do you have a restroom?
A: no, you must hold it.

slaveluci -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 9:50:50 AM)

I work in a library and I swear the sarcastic retorts that I have to hold back are sooooo numerous[:D].  People will actually say things like "Do you have any books..........," or "I was wondering if you could tell me if you have this book..........."  I feel like saying something like:  "No, we don't have a single book.  You came to the wrong place.  You want the service station down the street" or "No, I can't tell you if we have that book.  We don't keep records of the books we have - we just pile them willy-nilly on the shelves and go searching through every single one of them when someone asks for something."[8|]

If they could only hear the voices in my head....lol......[sm=angry.gif]

People who walk into my stores on cell phones having a full blown conversation loud enough to be heard!!!!!....Then they wonder why no one tries to help them...
Get off the damn phone!!!!!

GreedyTop -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 10:47:51 AM)

Yeah, I hate that too, Mark.  When people come in to check in, I'll just sit here and continue doing whatever I'm doing until theyve finished their conversation.  Well, I make exceptions to that rule when it's a regular guest.. in that case, I just check them in without having to exchange a word.

SilverMark -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 11:02:27 AM)

I have been known to walk up behind them and VERY LOUDLY ask CAN I HELP YOU FIND ANYTHING!....[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]....oops! sorry didn't see you on the phone....

sirsholly -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 11:07:35 AM)

i hate it when cell phone users have loud, personal conversations

GreedyTop -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 11:09:27 AM)

*hides cell phone*

I honestly try not to be loud when I'm on the phone, but my voice tends to carry anyway.. so sometimes I'm probably louder than I need to be when talking on the phone.

Aynne88 -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 11:33:54 AM)

Please people, I have a potty mouth, but not in inappropriate places. I hate seeing some dickhead saying "Fuck" in the supermarket and some woman that looks like my mom gets all horrified. That is just ignorant. Restrain yourselves. I was at the pharmacy on Friday and the two girls behind me were fuck this and fuck that, I s l o w l y turned around and just stared. Really stared. Not even a dirty look, more like a "wow, I am completely blown away by your ignorance look." It worked. For god's sake, this is not your living room you idiots.

Second peeve, do NOT get an animal if you can NOT take care of it. My idiot neighbors have a dog that lives on a chain. Lives there, it makes me sick. I have called animal control on them, and the guy said because he has a doghouse and water he is not being abused. Jerks. I am looking at him right now out of my kitchen window, and it makes me so pissed off. Last summer he ran over here at least 4 or 5 times and I gave him all kinds of treats and let him just hang out, but the people down the street complained that he was loose, so now the jerks keep him chained 24/7! Argh!

Lordandmaster -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 11:46:38 AM)

Right now the one I can think of is trucks in the right lane who refuse to slow down for the traffic entering the highway.  Most people don't seem to know or care that you're legally required to slow down for merging traffic, and there have been many fatal cases involving trucks.

In FL, thats not the case: "
  • Merge into traffic when you can do so safely. You must yield right-of-way to traffic on the expressway. You cannot always count on other drivers moving over to give you room to enter, but do not stop on an acceleration lane unless traffic is too heavy and there is no space for you to enter safely. "

in fact, in the 20+ yrs of driving professionally, I cant think of a single state where that IS the case.  I could be wrong, laws may have changed, but I am doubtful based on the way highway entrances are designed:
    "
  • On the entrance ramp, begin checking for an opening in traffic. Signal for your turn.
  • As the ramp straightens into the acceleration lane, speed up. Try to adjust your speed so that you can move into the traffic when you reach the end of the acceleration lane.

You cannot always count on other drivers moving over to give you room to enter, but do not stop on an acceleration lane unless traffic is too heavy and there is no space for you to enter safely.
    "

I said slow down, not yield, and I know that truck drivers have been charged with failing to slow down for merging traffic.  I don't have time right now to look for specific laws (I'll do that later), but I found this in a Wisconsin driving guide:

    quote:

If you're in the right lane, allow other drivers to merge from the left lane into the right lane so that faster traffic can pass in the left lane. In addition, provide space for vehicles to merge into the right lane when they are entering a roadway from an on-ramp.

GreedyTop -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 12:18:15 PM)

thats not got anything to do with the speed, it's spacing.

  • Exactly right, GT.  Another driving peeve of mine is people that start to slow down a quarter mile before reaching the off-ramp.  You should turn onto the off-ramp, THEN slow down so as not to interupt the general flow of traffic.

Lordandmaster -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 12:24:57 PM)

OK, that means you need to slow down if you're not providing enough space.  How else do you provide space?  Wow, some people just want to argue.

There was a case in Allentown, PA, this past year involving a truck who was charged for failing to slow down for merging traffic.  I've been trying to find it.

Edited to add: Here's my other pet peeve.  Truckers who drive in the left lane even though they're not passing.  Now you're going to tell me there's no law against that either?

GreedyTop -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 12:29:54 PM)

The vehicle merging is supposed to yield the right of way to the traffic on the highway.  The highway traffic should not 'slow down to provide space' because that is considered unsafe, at least according to every highway patrolman I've ever known, and to every state I've ever looked over their drivers handbooks from.  Not to mention, just look at what happens when people DO slow down to allow merging traffic in during high traffic times.. traffic jams.

    Just sayin.

I've never seen this law... just the ones that say you have to yield to everyone else if you're getting on the highway.

    marie2 -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 12:37:31 PM)

I'm not usually a grammar nazi, nor do I claim to be anywhere near perfect myself, but my latest pet peeve is noticing how many people arbitrarily capitalize random words in mid-sentence.

    WTF is up with that?

Raechard -> RE: pet peeves (12/28/2008 12:39:10 PM)

I have the same problem when merging into traffic I can't understand why people can't get into the middle lane when coming up to a junction because what you end up having to do is come to a standstill because there is no gap in the traffic, with people behind assuming you are not having to stop so they end up hitting you.

It’s just being considerate I don’t see what difference it makes to people already on the road if they have to move into the other lane when they see a junction approaching.

People going full circle on a roundabout to jump the queue turning left also annoys me.

    and cyclists, wildebeest etc. [:D]
