Obama picks global warming expert as science adviser

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama's choice of John P. Holdren as his science adviser sends a strong signal that Obama sees global warming as an urgent problem and wants bold suggestions for action.

The Harvard University environmental policy professor has argued that the world already is experiencing dangerous climate change as a result of fossil fuel combustion. He's said there's still time to avert catastrophe, but only with a strong and rapid global effort.

At a recent talk in Washington , Holdren boiled it down to this:

"Without energy there is no economy. Without climate there is no environment. Without economy and environment there's no material well-being, there's no civil society, there's no personal or national or international security. And the problem is that the way we've been getting the energy our economies need is wrecking the climate that our environment needs. That is the essence of the problem."

..so it will be fixed the same as acid rain had been?   we still have acid rain.  ...you can add dead zones to ocean.   rather then grow to the most consumption, it is time to improve the quality of life. which is separate from wanton reckless consumption.

the issue is mute- it is simply an excuse to impose a global tax.

we need to leave the UN, the WTO, NAFTA, GATT, the IMF, as neusian,  we need to get back to states rights...and dump the mode of being a fricken colony of the new world order.

Gosh, we share some agreement on something. But you forgot to mention the carbon credit schemes...

And why is it that it seems like every time something like this is announced it's snowing in Las Vegas and there's a blizzard in New York, or there are record lows every place. [sm=news.gif]

I'd be embarrassed to admit that I didn't know the difference between climate and weather. [8|]

Well then, don't admit it, and save yourself some embarrassment.

I don't know about global warming.  I love the physical sciences, but I never did that well in those subjects.  I love listening and learning about our universe, but I would never pretend to be an authority on what goes on.  However, I am rational.  I can learn and compare data.  The idea of global warming sounds rational to me.  To my fellow conservative pals:  I'm sorry, I just don't aggree that it's a scam.  I say the same thing to my Christian friends that don't believe in evolution.

I don't know about Obama's science advisor, but I didn't know anything about Bush's or Clinton's.  I don't know who they were.

I don't recall anyone in the media making a big deal over who the Bush or Clinton science advisers were, or at what church they worshiped, either.

This was my personal favorite "Without climate there is no environment."

Please explain how an economy would function without any energy. If you can't, which you obviously can't, perhaps you'd be wise to stop slinging insults.

I used to work at a weather company (not the Weather Channel). The very learned and brilliant geekazoid scientists/meteorologists/weather gurus there, who knew a helluva lot more than me or practially anyone else about the weather, climate, and all that, were about evenly divided on the topic of global warming.

They pretty much all did agree that historical weather patterns show cycles of "global warming"...followed, as is the way of cycles, by periods of cooling, such as the Little Ice Age.

Obama's vacationing in Hawaii again...

You have to wonder what his global warming guru "science advisor" is telling him about his carbon footprint as it relates to repeatedly making unnecessary trips half way around the planet.

I can't have the SUV that I need to get around safely in the snow and ice but our glorious leader can fly his family and his aides and his secret service detail and a full press entourage to Hawaii so he can strut half-naked along the beach for a photo op...

What a load of shit!

Shirtless images of Obama cause stir online

WASHINGTON (AP) - Forget Barack Obama's staff making contact with a governor charged with corruption. What's got everyone talking is the president-elect's fine first form.

"FIT FOR OFFICE: Buff Bam is Hawaii hunk," the New York Post gushed on its cover Tuesday above a photo of the future president strolling without a shirt in Hawaii. The Drudge Report called him "President Beefcake" while TMZ said the president-elect is "still humble enough to do laundry—ON HIS ABS!"

The photos were distributed by Bauer-Griffin, a photo agency more typically found on the corners of Hollywood. Photographer Chris Behnke simply strolled along the beach to get the shot, said agency co-owner Frank Griffin.

Obama "wasn't hiding. He was completely out in the open," Griffin said. "We didn't by any stretch of the imagination expect to get the images we got."

Griffin said Behnke had gone to the beach to get general views of the estate where Obama is vacationing, but instead found easy access to a view of the first family hitting the beach. "We use the expression, 'He gave it up,' " Griffin said.

At least Obama is taking a vacation now, before he takes office. Bush was in the whitehouse only a couple weeks, when he then decided to take a whole month off!  We can just be grateful that he wasn't seen with his shirt off. Aside from that, who cares? He's taking advantage of some family time. In less than a month the man will have no life of his own any more. If it were me, I'd probably do the same thing.

Sanity -> RE: BRR! Throw another log on the fire & discuss this: (12/24/2008 3:47:34 AM)

Since Obama's been preaching that we Americans can't continue to eat all we want or drive our SUVs anymore, maybe he had ought to lead by example, and show us how it's done. How to reduce one's carbon footprints rather than wallowing in the same kind of luxurious lifestyle that he and his so-called "science advisor" claim they hold in contempt.

I posted this thread a couple of weeks back

http://www.collarchat.com/m_2332763/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#2332763

I've met the guy.  As I've said before, I know very few Nobel Laureates are morons (and none in physics)- but I certainly can't say the same for some of the people on these boards.

The reason that Obama's pick for DOE is getting noticed and Bush's wasn't?  Because nobody in the science community had ever heard of Bush's first pick, Spencer Abraham, (he was a lawyer, not a scientist) and Steven Chu is a Nobel Laureate.   From my perspective- any time Bush appointed somebody to a science post- my first response was - huh?  Funny how with Obama's picks, my comment is- Hey- I know that guy/gal- and they've all been well respected, solid scientists.

Also- Pahunkboy- acid rain has certainly diminished dramatically since the switch to low sulfate coal.  There are no magic wands to fix the environment overnight.  I'd also point out that brain damage from lead ingestion in children has also dropped dramatically since lead was removed from gasoline in the 1970s, and that overall air and water quality has been improving with EPA regulations over the past 5 decades or so.  I could keep going- do I need to?

Auburn- the debate about the science of global warming is now over.  The recent IPCC report did that along with enough data on sunspot cycles to show that there's no correlation with climate change.  Susan Solomon's recent talk at the MRS meeting in November certainly nailed the lid on that coffin.  You wanna debate global warming?  Well, you're now arguing with physics.  Of course there are people that argue that gravity doesn't exist, the earth is flat, that smoking doesn't cause cancer etc.  Feel free....
