I posted this thread a couple of weeks back http://www.collarchat.com/m_2332763/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#2332763 I've met the guy. As I've said before, I know very few Nobel Laureates are morons (and none in physics)- but I certainly can't say the same for some of the people on these boards. The reason that Obama's pick for DOE is getting noticed and Bush's wasn't? Because nobody in the science community had ever heard of Bush's first pick, Spencer Abraham, (he was a lawyer, not a scientist) and Steven Chu is a Nobel Laureate. From my perspective- any time Bush appointed somebody to a science post- my first response was - huh? Funny how with Obama's picks, my comment is- Hey- I know that guy/gal- and they've all been well respected, solid scientists. Also- Pahunkboy- acid rain has certainly diminished dramatically since the switch to low sulfate coal. There are no magic wands to fix the environment overnight. I'd also point out that brain damage from lead ingestion in children has also dropped dramatically since lead was removed from gasoline in the 1970s, and that overall air and water quality has been improving with EPA regulations over the past 5 decades or so. I could keep going- do I need to? Auburn- the debate about the science of global warming is now over. The recent IPCC report did that along with enough data on sunspot cycles to show that there's no correlation with climate change. Susan Solomon's recent talk at the MRS meeting in November certainly nailed the lid on that coffin. You wanna debate global warming? Well, you're now arguing with physics. Of course there are people that argue that gravity doesn't exist, the earth is flat, that smoking doesn't cause cancer etc. Feel free.... Sam
