OK, granted, it's tempting to pile on and gloat about Russia's and Putin's come-uppance, but at the end of the day I think everyone can agree that having a stable, reasonably healthy Russia sitting right next door to the European Union is in everyone's best interests. Yes, they have only themselves to blame for the situation they've put themselves in, but they're still a very powerful and influential force in regional and global politics. I'm not really thrilled about any set of circumstances that makes them feel as though they're backed into some kind of corner. Because when they start to feel that way, they have a history of making rather rash, unsettling decisions to protect what they believe their interests to be.

Indeed Panda - we need to remember that if Russia turns off the taps, much of Europe goes without gas for its consumers and for its power stations.

But Russia needs the money.

It's the same with OPEC, they can talk a big game of slowing the supply way down but their member states need to pump more and more to make up for the shortfall they're experiencing due to the lower prices.

Russia might need the money - the guys who own all the wealth dont.

They could afford to stop trading a while and let the price rise. They dont give a flying fxxx about their country and especially about their people except as it suits their purposes or as directed by Putin.

But this is something a little different; they can hold Europe to ransom as they wish. Taps turned off today, even with the reserves being held, will mean no heating and power in a short time - well before seagoing tankers might arrive from further afield.
