OK, granted, it's tempting to pile on and gloat about Russia's and Putin's come-uppance, but at the end of the day I think everyone can agree that having a stable, reasonably healthy Russia sitting right next door to the European Union is in everyone's best interests. Yes, they have only themselves to blame for the situation they've put themselves in, but they're still a very powerful and influential force in regional and global politics. I'm not really thrilled about any set of circumstances that makes them feel as though they're backed into some kind of corner. Because when they start to feel that way, they have a history of making rather rash, unsettling decisions to protect what they believe their interests to be.
