Ahhh come on....what are you smoking????  It's a web site, it is not going to change the world.

People write what people write, with the good comes the bad, next thing you know, you will only want peole who agree, or disagree, then next you'll become a web site unto yourself, then a religion and you're right back where you started, well CM is not a religion.

It's a free web site, if you start putting up standards they will have to charge

I think the answer to your question is simple. We are all the product of our upbringing and life experiences. Since everyone lives a different life with different influences our outlook on the world around us will be different.

I thought you were ..." ready to move beyond slamming each other with our preconceptions" and ..."leave behind the swipes"

Good start

It's funny that you post this after my contemplation, on my drive to work, of a thread about female supremacy. Watching one person that believes strongly in it, lose all rational posting ability, while trying to argue their case with a man that identifies as gorean.

Now, I don't believe in either philosophy myself, but I know people that do, that I've come to regard in favourable light. I honestly do not see why the two parties have to disagree so vehemently. One is right for some, the other, for others.....and neither for most of us. Simple really.

Then, you go to religioun or gawd forbid politics! Again, it gets overly emotional, and personal.

So, I was trying to come to some sort of reasoning. In the past I have chalked it up to insecurity and fear. While that may be a huge part of it, I am not convinced it is all of it. I think it is even deeper.

We have these core values that are so strongly ingrained in our vision of who we are at a very deep level. I think to admit that there might, just MAYBE, be more than one "right way" threatens our very self identity. We feel threatened so we go on the attack.

Even more interesting, I think that in some things, we almost feel that we would be remiss if we didn't go on the attack. Like the thread about a Playboy magazine the other day. A devote Catholic was so passionate in their displeasure it was palpable. I felt that they thought if they didn't convey that outrage that there was some deep seated fear of almost........persecution, or "you will go to hell"......by not fighting for their cause.

It's almost a drive to fight for our beliefs to both feel a part of something, and save ourselves from some horrid fate if we don't stand up and defend.

In this environment, it is as though it would be almost a sin to give any validity to any other point of view, regardless of whether or not it has any effect on them personally. So they fight on, beyond all rationality. They cannot see their frenzy, nor do they care at that point. They are almost rabid with emotion to defend their cause.

To me, it's sad. It locks people into a zone where no light shines. There is no ability to educate, or broaden horizons. It is this type of thinking that causes most of the world's ills.

It does however, make for some entertaining reading at times.......
