Does anyone know anything about fasting...how long you can safely fast and what suppliments you should take while doing so, etc?

Thanks

mistoferin -> RE: Fasting (12/16/2008 6:16:39 PM)

I do a 15 to 21 day fast every spring. It really depends upon your overall health and what type of fast you are going on. People with certain types of compromised health issues shouldn't fast at all. Another factor that weighs in heavily is the reason for the fast in the first place.

puella -> RE: Fasting (12/16/2008 6:17:34 PM)

Yikes, you go without food for two weeks???

mistoferin -> RE: Fasting (12/16/2008 6:22:38 PM)

Yes, and I have been doing so every year for the last 25 years...and I have studied the subject extensively. It's not a light undertaking and I do not do it without much thought, care, preparation and monitoring.

puella -> RE: Fasting (12/16/2008 6:25:12 PM)

Woah, good for you... I get nervous thinking about giving up sweets during lent! lol

mistoferin -> RE: Fasting (12/16/2008 6:31:37 PM)

LOL....I understand. A big part of the prep going into it is getting your head "right". This is not something that I believe you could get the proper and necessary information about on a message board. Sure you could get some feedback but there is a lot more that needs to happen before doing something that extreme.

Im just curious and tell me if its non of my business. I am wondering whats your reason for fasting, to clear out your system, religious reasons, or perhaps to lose weight. I have that about doing a fast to flush my system, with plenty of suppliments, juice, ect.

pahunkboy -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 4:53:25 AM)

OMG Erin,  you ROCK!

I go from lean to bloated all the time. I keep all sizes of pants... as my weight changes often.

But more to the point,  in a world of disequilibrium,  then, you find equilibrium,
I bet it clears your mind.   But I cant picture me doing it.  WHen I am low on sugars, I get ... weak.

housesub4you -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 4:58:47 AM)

We fast for religous reason, by we; I mean my wife fast's so basically I do also.

Though it is never all food, it is only certain foods over a period of time.  Basically before Easter is the big fast for a couple of weeks.

I have a friend who fast's to lose weight, but most health experts say this is not a good way to maintain a healthy weight.  She will only drink juice for 2 weeks and looks like hell in the end then just puts the weight back on.

I've gotten in the habit of doing a fast and a body detox at least once a year.  I've done three weeks and had no issues with it outside of a headache the first few days.   I do it mainly as a cleanse, not for any religious reasons.  My advice to the OP is to find a good natural health food store near you (NOT GNC) and pick their brains.  There are all kinds of regulated fasts out there and they can help you pick the right one for you based on what you want to accomplish.  Everyone should do a fast/detox at least once a year.  Our bodies absorb so many toxins on a daily basis that it's necessary to clean that crap out of our systems.  Fasting is a perfect way to do that.  You'd be amazed at what sits in an average adult's colon.  [&:]

housesub4you -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 5:36:03 AM)

This confounds me.  You can do the same thing with eating a healthy diet. However in a quick interent search, the only people who promote detoxing as a health issue have something to sell you about how,to use to detox your body.

Promoters of detoxing are vague in their definition of "toxin". This is either because a) a toxin comes in so many different forms or b) by keeping the definition vague, the detox promoters can attract a broader spectrum of customers.

The general theory is that our world is full of toxins and our bodies can't get rid of them fast enough. If the toxin alarmists were right - most of us would be dead right now. To legitimize these claims, toxin theorist ought to be able to provide before and after blood analysis showing noticeable differences in liver enzymes, levels of antioxidant vitamins, and levels of aluminum and other metals.

But none do this.   It just seems like alot of people are making a lot of money off this and offer nothing but there own studies as proof they work

subatheart77 -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 5:41:39 AM)

8 days every 3 months or so... Water. Started when I was a teenager (in the 60ies) but at the time oly 3 days. Normal life. Nothing to do with weight loss, more of a cleansing process.

ItalianSMistress -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 5:44:02 AM)

Just wanted to put in my two cents....

Even with health issues, you can fast, it just has to be more carefully monitored.  For example, I am a type 1 (juvenile) diabetic, I take up to six injections a day, but I still fast over Lent, as I am also a strong willed Catholic.  On Good Friday I dont even drink water until after nightfall.  You just have to research and make sure that the fast you are doing is safe, and what to do in case of a problem with a health issue.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 5:48:29 AM)

Look at the rise in cancer rates...especially those linked to toxin exposure.
Lymphomas, leukemias.
I have personal experience with the benefits of fasting.  Someone very close to me did a sixty day fast/detox after being diagnosed with a very aggressive lymphoma.  He did all of this before he started chemo.  The side effects from the chemo were minimal..hair loss and he felt incredible throughout.  He remodeled a bathroom and installed wood flooring in three rooms all during his chemo schedule.  His bloodwork throughout remained incredible.  He did not detox/ fast during chemo because he didn't want to counteract the effects of the drugs, but I can tell you that every single nurse in the chemo room stopped by, sat down with him and asked him what he did since they saw an incredible difference with him as opposed to all of their other patients...and he was not one of those super healthy people in terms on nutrition before all of this started.
How can it be wrong to put optimum things into your body?  The detox supplements were liquid and plant based...not man made.  The juices we drank were organic and fresh pressed every morning.  You can't open a bottle of Welsh's grape juice and expect the same results as a fresh pressed organic carrot, apple, celery, red cabbage, beet, and ginger juice.  People have been fasting for centuries...healthy cultures do it regularly.  I know that I feel incredible during and after.

CrazyC -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 5:58:26 AM)

There are many ways to detox, so you really do need to know why you are wanting to. My body has forced me a couple of time to go on a fast this last year when it was detoxing from working with rieki, and when i was getting a massage everyday because of school. I had to keep an eye on my water intake, my iron, and force bread down me occationally since all i was eating was fruit and veggies. The fruit and veggies were usually in juice form.

We can also detox by taking certain cleansing herbs, teas, and fruits and veggies that can be added to your daily life. Also massages can help detox. Aileen, I know a great massage move that will help clear up anyone's colon. :) And everyday exercixe is a excellent way to detox your body on a daily basis. I hope this helps.

When I fasted it was partly to lose weight, or keep it off. Actually I am thinking of doing it again just because I feel heavier. I never weigh myself, I go by how I feel.

So I have only done three to five days, and, don't laugh, during that time I drink beer. It is an excellent diuretic.

Though I do it chiefly for weight management, I am not ignorant of the other possible positive effects. But since weight is a concern, I am very careful what I eat when the fast is over. At that time I go for the most nutritious food I can find, for example a plate of macaroni and cheese is not going to do it. I want meat and veggies. Something with onions and garlic and seasalt in it or on it.

Given the fact that I began my second fast today, this thread really grabbed my attention.

I'm a fasting novice.  My first fast was about a month ago.  I did a juice (veggies and fruit) fast for 4 days.  This time I'm just doing a 3-day, because I have to bake cookies over the weekend, and I know I won't be able to resist sampling.  After the holidays, I plan to do a longer fast.  Not sure I could last for 30 days, but I'm going to shoot for a 2-3 week fast in January.

From the reading I did beforehand, it is recommended that you don't go from never having fasted to a really long fast.  They recommend a 3-5 day first, then a 10 day, then longer if you want.  And if you plan on doing a water fast, they recommend a juice fast first.  Not sure if there is any validity to this, but it's what I read.

My experience with the 4-day fast was a headache on the first day (so far this time, I don't have a headache, but it's only 11 am).  On my second day I seemed to cough a lot.  And in my reading it said that one of the major ways your body eliminates toxins is through your lungs, therefore I wasn't surprised when this occured, I figured it was working the way it was supposed to.

Surprisingly I didn't feel sluggish at all.  And the first 2 days I did feel hungry, but it wasn't a torture, just a bit of discomfort that I considered pretty bearable.   By the third day my body seemed to have shut down it's appetite, so the third and fourth days were a bit easier than the first two.

I can't really report any feelings of great transformation (but that's probably because I only did it for 4 days).  I did feel energetic afterwards and somewhat healthier and more inclined to eat a diet of mostly vegetables and whole grains. I felt like I didn't want to screw up my newly-cleansed system with meats and other indigestable garbage like white bread and refined sugar. In fact, last night was the first time I had meat in over a month, which is a long time for me, since I used to consume red meat on a regular basis. So, I would say that doing the fast definitely left me more inclined to eat a healthier diet in general.

There was also this strange feeling of power...not physically, but mentally, like wow, I can't believe I haven't eaten in two days, three days, four days. etc.  I was really skeptical that I would last a day, so when I saw the days going by me without eating,  it felt empowering on some strange level.  I'm looking forward to doing a longer fast next month.

The worst part of the whole thing was cleaning the juicer 6-8 times a day.  This time around I am using V-8 Fusions, which is a blend of vegetable and fruit juice without any added sugars.  Surprisingly the taste and texture of it is pretty similar to what came out of my juicer when I was using the fresh fruits and veggies.  It's probably not as beneficial as fresh fruits and vegetables, but I'm going to see how it works out for me, since cleaning all the parts of that juicer multiple times a day is a real hassle and not something I see myself doing for 3 weeks. I tried juicing some ahead of time, and bottling it for the day, but it didn't stay homogenized, and it was somewhat squicky to me for some reason.

LostCatgirl -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 9:10:48 AM)

my grandpa used to fast every tuesday so i started to fast every monday and i have to say that my body felt better so then i started eating only organic food and WOW!!! i feel like i could run a marathon (not that i would im too lazy ^_^), my weight dropped and i could breath better (i'd been having trouble with my lungs),everything got better. i still fast every monday and alyays wanted to go longer but i read somewhere the if the body goes 3 days without food then you'll die so how do u do it without dying???

housesub4you -> RE: Fasting (12/17/2008 9:55:52 AM)

It's 3 days without water, not food.  You can go about 7-10 days without food depending on your body fat.  Me, off my beer belly alone I could go 3 weeks without food
