mistoferin -> Food gifts and Jar mix recipes? (12/16/2008 11:05:31 AM)

Thought I would ask everyone what kind of food gifts they enjoy getting and giving. I'm especially interested in finding a few new Jar mix recipes...I love those things.

With winter here, I think soup or chili jar mixes would be nice.

greetings mist  :)

as to receiving, well, i like treats and i am not much of a baker/sweets-maker.  so i love receiving home made cookies or something similar that are not standard.  i mean, for example, i can whip up a batch of chocolate chip or no-bake oatmeal myself.  but if someone has taken the time to make something unique and special (my personal all time favorite is 7-layer cookies), that present is da BEST.

i don't cook, really, so giving a gift of food is not really something i would do so i cannot help you there.

Merry Christmas pretty mist :)

I have a cookbook on the computer...this recipe looks good.

Chocolate Velvet Sauce in a Jar
1 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup light corn syrup
12 ounces high quality semi-sweet chocolate bars, chopped*
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  1. Combine sugar, evaporated milk, butter and corn syrup in heavy 3-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a full boil (15 to 20 minutes). Boil 3 minutes; remove from heat.
  2. Immediately add chocolate pieces. Beat with wire whisk or electric mixer
  3. To serve, remove cover. Microwave on HIGH, stirring every 30 seconds, until warm (1 to 1 1/2 minutes).
Makes 3 (8-ounce) jars . *Substitute 1 (12-ounce) package (2 cups) semi-sweet real chocolate chips.
Variation: Omit vanilla. Stir in 1 to 2 teaspoons
of your favorite extract: mint, raspberry, almond, rum, etc. Tip: Tie ribbon on jars and attach gift tags with serving directions.

I like receiving the jar mixes that don't require me adding anything except perhaps milk or water.  If I have to add eggs, butter, etc., I won't do it... I'll ask around and give it away... even though I love to cook.  I know, makes no sense.

Microwave play dough looks good.

I have given homemade whiskey-cream liqueur, assorted bite sized fudges in a tin, and redwine with glühwein mix before. All were recieved quite well. Sadly, nobody other than me does the homemade gift thing in our family/friends. I appreciate the thought and workd that goes into those much more than a generic store bought something.

sub4hire -> RE: Food gifts and Jar mix recipes? (12/16/2008 1:52:08 PM)

I do both each year.  I'm the chef of the family...so I've always been the one to make the seasonal favorites as well.
Since moving here nothing seems to have changed a whole lot.  I'm the chef among our friends as well.

This year I am making caramel apples to give to everyone.  Been looking for ideas and flavors.

This site has a lot...I guess I've found what I am seeking.

If you lived closer I'd love to trade off tasty goodies.  As it is I don't eat any of what I make.  It is so time consuming making it.

You should dip some of those caramel apples in chocolate.  They are sooo good, my aunt does them for her church fundraiser.  You need to use apples that are tart, otherwise it doesn't have a good effect.

OttersSwim -> RE: Food gifts and Jar mix recipes? (12/16/2008 2:11:38 PM)

I make my own habanero hot sauce:

1 cup water
1 cup good quality apple cider vinegar
3 carrots sliced
1 onion sliced
6 cloves garlic sliced
1.5 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
6-10 habanero peppers cut in half - seeds and veins removed (wear gloves for the Love of God!)

Put ingredients in a saucepan.  Simmer on medium heat for 20 minutes until all is softened and your kitchen smells of hot vinegar!

Let cool

Pour into a food processor or high speed blender and blend into a smooth liquid.  Jar or bottle immediately.

YUM!!!!!  This has really amazing flavor and while it is hot...is not blisteringly so...at least not for me...[;)]

I used to manage the bakery at a large apple farm and we made gourmet caramel apples that were just amazing! Several very famous people placed an order every year that they gave for gifts. It always amazed me that people ordered them because they were really pricey....$25 a piece.

We started by making your traditional caramel apple and then when the caramel was set it was dipped in chocolate (white or regular). After it was dipped in chocolate it got rolled in a variety of things in all kinds of combinations. Mini M&Ms, crushed Oreos, assorted nuts, Reese's pieces, those nuts that are coated in cinnamon and sugar glaze, sprinkles. You can really use any type of candy, dried fruits or nuts that you enjoy...just crush or chop. I like those honey cinnamon almonds that you buy for salads. After rolling in whatever combination you choose then we would drizzle them with the opposing color chocolate....if we used regular chocolate for the dipping we would use white chocolate for the drizzle and vice versa. You can even color the white chocolate. After they were well set they were placed in a cellophane bag and tied with a pretty bow. They are gorgeous and really yummy!

These recipes are great...keep 'em coming!!! I'm getting a lot of awesome ideas. Someone just sent me one for some really great sounding biscuits...I hadn't even thought of something like that.

Parmesan Herb Biscuits Mix In A Jar

3 cups self-rising flour
1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon dried basil leaves, crushed
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves, crushed

Blend all ingredients well and pour into a cellophane bag or jar.

Instructions for gift tag: 1 cup milk or buttermilk 1 stick butter, melted Jar/Bag of Mix Combine all, blend well. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 12 min. on greased cookie sheet.

If it's not a cooked item, I will not make it.  I will admire the nice jar, say Thank You Very Much,  and regift it! [:D]

Yep, those are the type of apples I am making.  4 to a person...tomorrow if I can scrape enough free time together its apple day.
Got a good idea for a pumpkin spiced apple.
I used to buy them in Lake Arrowhead in California.  About 7 bucks an apple but well worth it.

mistoferin -> RE: Food gifts and Jar mix recipes? (12/16/2008 3:24:12 PM)

I saw pumpkin flavored white chocolate at the local "make it yourself" candy shop. There used one of those flavored candy oil that come in the tiny bottles. Other than that you could dehydrate pumpkin and then grind it in an electric grinder, add some pumpkin pie spice. I think if you added it to chocolate you would probably have to thin it with a dab of Crisco though.

Vendaval -> RE: Food gifts and Jar mix recipes? (12/16/2008 7:18:30 PM)

These recipes sound amazing folks!  I try to avoid sugar over-load and prefer to give and gift nuts, cheeses, dried fruits and teas/coffees.

sub4hire -> RE: Food gifts and Jar mix recipes? (12/16/2008 8:19:50 PM)

This apple was made with..caramel with white chocolate.  Crumbled graham cracker crust and coarse sugar with pumpkin pie spice.  They supposedly sell out each and every year.
