Termyn8or -> What is CM ? (12/15/2008 9:25:02 AM)

I am starting to think it is like a morning newspaper for the kinky. That we are the writers, by invitation, which would explain a few things.

I just looked and there are 331 members and 1,431 guests here. That means that at this time there are over three times as many people reading our words as those priveledged to write them. Are we really that interesting ?

Perhaps so, notice where you are at this moment.

I see posts get pulled, that is simply the equivalent of an editor disapproving. We are not required to churn out X amount of articles per day, and we can get alot more politically incorrect than anyone could at a major newspaper. There is no pay, but for one those reporters don't make all that much, and for two we are not charged with covering this or that story. The topic is solely at our discretion.

However the topic can be removed, just as the editor can bounce a story that the author thinks belongs on the front page. Why ? Because there are a whole different set of factors in play on the other side of the desk, so to speak.

So think of it this way, if all the letters to the editor were published in your local Sunday morning newspaper, it would take a semi to deliver it, for each copy I mean. There has to be some selection. There was a deslection just this morning, about the shoe thrown at Bush, though it might have only been moved over to stupidity. I hope so because I was about to reply, something like "Put a foot in it". We can pick on politicians like no normal newspaper could. We can attack government actions like no newspaper ever would. We can expose conspiracies like no newspaper even should.

The main thing I realized about CM is that as a privedged one, one who can post at will, it is like I have a little slice of the power of the press at my fingertips. Of the 1,431 guests that were here when I started typing this, how many do you think are the same ones now ? And this is worldwide to boot ! This site probably gets 11 kagillion hits a month, and I hope those pennies add up to a good sum to help keep it free of cost.

Freedom is oft misinterpreted, because first of all, none of us have ever been free. As a minor example, you can be free of your electric bill but you will also be free of the bounds of electricity. I sometimes read the American Free Press. People come over and some ask "How come it says free and has a price on it of $1.50 ?". In that sense it means free of manipulation by advertisers and conglomerates who dominate most of the rest of the media. The AFP can be interesting at times, especially when you finally hear something on the news or read it in a local paper and you already know about it because AFP got the scoop. They also have a health section, in which I have seen them print two almost diametrically opposed articles on the same page. They have also published letters to the editor that were were critical of their own publication.

So this is kind of like that. I have corresponded with ex-members and they seem to share one opinion, that the moderators were unfair, or that they were biased. I have seen no evidence of that.

What I have seen is people running this site who are image concious, and want to let the world know that kinksters are regular people too, to get it through peoples' thick skulls, if you don't want us to do it to you, just don't ask us to. Like homosexuals coming out of the closet. They are on TV now (television that is). I am subjected to TV at times, the Tyra show, you know how hard that can be on a Man, but I am getting paid by the hour. Nonetheless, they explore all  that, now how's about we become a large enough contingent to possibly go on TV.

It has been done, but to my knowledge only on Jerry Springer, and I only watched that because my sister told me that she swears one of her ex beaus was on the show. This guy was the spittin' image of him as well, wearing a collar led around by a Domme. Other, tertiary information gleaned matched as well BTW, as well as his first name.

Kinksters don't need recruits, but we do need acceptance, that if caught, it doesn't have to result in a suicide or a slunking away from life.

I have long said that with a certain history of actions, intent can be determined. I believe that this site exists to combat the general negativity and stigma placed on the kink community by the "normal" people. Yes the normal people who will cheat you out of money and then go to church and put it in the collection plate.

Use this little glimmer of this awesome power wisely folks. People will be reading what you post from Finland to bumfukt Egypt somewhere. (nothing against Egpt, just a figure of speech, can explain upon request)

And I still hate the word 'awesome' , yet have used it four times this year.

Of course a discussion of why the yuan is pegged to the dollar and it's impact on world economics will degenerate into an argument about the cost of 1,000 tsetse flies in northern Tibet, but that's the way it is.

I have ranted, but right now I felt like unranting.

Rant away!! I don't mind. Yet, I doubt that many 'others' on the other side read them.  I wish, fresh meat (perspective) would be nice. As for it being like a newspaper, I don't know, other political boards and such have much broader opinions.  I hope some non posters (readers only) wouldn't come here (to this side) just to know what is going on in the world lol.  It would be scary to be that limited.

Musicmystery -> RE: What is CM ? (12/15/2008 9:41:29 AM)

It does seem like many posts are nothing more than "I read this news article," with "news" used damn loosely, including blogs, youtube, and position sites. It also seems that some are here to promote their undying position, threads or comments, and the facts or the reasoning are irrelevant to them.

I'd much rather see people post their reasoned thoughts. This, at least, invites discussion.

Those with positions to push should consider blogs. I finally blocked a handful of posters--just the same old day after day, and a waste of time, just as we filter junk mail, join the "do not call" registry, and report spam. On a blog, however, instead of forcing yourself onto readers, you must actually attract them. Sure, perhaps you'll be preaching to the choir, but frankly a lot of people here seem to prefer that. If, on the other hand, someone wanted to interest readers with opposing or alternate views, that would be it's own unique (and worthwhile) challenge, rather than repetitive assaults on a discussion forum.

You know it's not going to change. At least not anytime soon. After all, disagreements here are often "you didn't get my point" instead of entertaining the amazing possibility of divergent takes. And that's not even counting the replies that are the silly "Well, prove me wrong" fallacy, let alone those that are simply personal attacks right from the start.

But who knows. Things change. Maybe this will too.

Ah, hope.  That vain yet eternal spark that some seem to hold onto regardless of the proofs of history...... [;)]

In all seriousness, human nature - whether one be kinkster or not - doesn't much seem to change over the course of eons.  We fight, we fuck, we eat and sleep and die - and everything in between those passtimes is simply killing time waiting for the next one, or setting up the circumstances to facilitate the next one.  Even the Fighting is pretty much a facilitator for one of the others - usually either fucking or eatting - when the long view is taken.  (Of course, there Are exceptions to that rule, just as there are exceptions to nearly every "rule.") Such being the case, humans rarely apply Logic or Reason to any endeavor that they don't percieve (at least within themselves) as facilitating one of those passtimes.  And even when applied to those specific endeavors, what passes for "reason" with a large percentage of the population is strictly a matter of Interpretation by the Outside Viewer.

Yes, actually we are, now get used to it.  I can't even tell you how many people out of nowhere who have e-mailed me and said they read this thread or that thread.  Many more read them than actually speak up.

Still hard to believe.

Aren't there newspapers where you live? You're claiming multitudes of CM people email you about "news" items posted on the Off Topic Discussion Board?

If any of that's true, it's pretty sad.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: What is CM ? (12/15/2008 2:28:09 PM)

What is CM, or specifically the collarchat part of CM, it is a waste of good advertising dollars from my perspective. You guys are lucky I don't run it. There'd be at least 3 ads per page, of course, I'd try to make it acceptable by giving a portion of the proceeds to make a wish foundation or something, that way you couldn't complain about it.

Oh, I'd also have a real store attached to this thing selling everything from bunny slippers to 10 foot dildos.

Or people might just stop reading it.

Like the other stuff where people have to disguise links to in order to attempt to find readers.

Kind of makes you wonder how many "articles" are written by nude authors....or not...lol. Interesting observation about the members vs. non-members numbers in any case, hadn't really gave it any thought before.

Not multitudes, but I do have people that point me to stuff, esp if its UK relevent. Also the OP wasnt just about news articles and I have had messages from 'readers only' regarding other parts of the board.

whoosh as it flies overhead, unnoticed.  'what was that?' one might ask.  sarcasm, the great lost american art- rekindled by the musicman.
