Are there any outward signals or indicators people wear or display to demonstrate that they're part of the BDSM culture? I mean some kind of outward sign, apparent to those in the know, like the AA symbol or a Free Masons pin.

I've wondered if the 'rat tail' braids people used to wear were indications that the person was a sub, but I think it was just a fashion statement.

A popular piece of jewelery back when girl was in high school was bondage bracelets (bracelet with chain that was attached to a ring), that was back in the 80s.
Another you can see upon the body of erotic dancers. Generally a certain type of pic marked them as owned.
Now for some it was a fashion statement, but ear clips would mean that the individual was a slave if the initials engraved upon it were not their own.
Necklaces with locks on them like a pendent. Their dominant wore a similar necklace with the key to the lock upon it. Meaning they were someone elses property.
Then of course there is the ring around the neck that is welded together. Girl has only seen this once.
Even seen a girl wearing a pair of pants with a zipper that went from the front to the back with a lock upon the zipper. For the lock it had a key which of course was used only when needed but girl knew what it meant. That again was something girl seen back in high school.

There's always the triskeli symbol.

MisterMonster -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 12:53:49 AM)

What's the Triskeli symbol?

avinyl -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 1:05:00 AM)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BDSM_Emblem

eta: I don't often see the "copyrighted" design mentioned in that entry, but similar ones using more of a triple spiral design, somewhat like the ones in the "triskelion" Wiki entry.

MisterMonster -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 1:07:51 AM)

Oh, is THAT what that is!

I was, like, "I did't know bondage had such an Eastern flaire..." Ok, now it makes sense...and now I'm gonna keep an eye out for that symbol!

If you look at the Wiki entry for "triskelion", you can see more examples (see my edit above). Personally, I have a bit of a Celtic fetish as well, so either way, when I see that, I'm bound to have something to talk about with the wearer. [;)]

Oh yeah...duh...totally forgot it shows up over <---there.

Yup I have a tattoo of that, well similar mine is prettier :)

stella41b -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 4:34:14 AM)

Sure there is. But my being kinky or sub isn't a fashion statement, but part of who I am.

Bruises...

The best way I can find out that is reliable is to meet 'em at a munch or dungeon party ...

SassySarijane -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 6:47:47 AM)

There really aren't any absolute, tell tale signs in general society. Many things used to represent bdsm are also used as fashion statements. Also someone can have a submissive or dominant personality and not be into this in any way. Unless you meet or see someone at a munch or other event or outright ask them, you will never know for sure if they are into it or not.

Lashra -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 7:19:07 AM)

I have a bracelet with handcuffs on it that I wear sometimes. The guys who work for me guessed by my saying "Get your ass on it NOW or I'll get my whip out!"[;)]

I wear a "story of O" ring, and a collar.  Probably if you knew what a story of O ring was , combined with the collar, you would have a pretty good idea i was into bdsm.  However, i don't have to wear the "i live and love bdsm" sign - its way too bulky for day to day wear - lol.

No, just an indication that that person needs a haircut, stat.

There is nothing I wear that would pin me as a kinky person.

Sunnyfey -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 8:56:32 AM)

rat tail braid always looked kind of stupid to me.

but i digress.

Dont forget the Leather Flag http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather_Pride_flag
though that tends to be more with the Leather and LGBT communities. Tends to denote the kinky one in that subculture. but then again not all Leathermen (or women) participate in BDSM.

no catch all symbol for us really....

Check any New Age website and the triskelion symbol is quite prominent. Pagans and Wiccans associate the triskelion as a symbol for the triple Goddess aspect. Maiden, Mother and Crone.

Some still use parts of the hanky code to indicate their kink proclivities, some have tattoos, some wear pieces of jewelry that indicate their kink. Quite often when you are talking with a person many will subtly indicate if they are kink friendly or not.

MidMichCowboy -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 10:40:12 AM)

I was thinking of having some cuffs hanging from one side of my belt and a short tail from the other.

littlewonder -> RE: Tell tale signs (12/14/2008 10:51:11 AM)

I think outward signs are tacky to be honest.

I would rather just get to know someone as a person and take it from there. I figure if we don't have enough in common for a relationship at least we can probably be good friends.

My only "outward" sign is a bracelet but it's just an ordinary bracelet that Master bought me but it's extraordinary to me.
