If I explained to you how Dec.23, 2012 - 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 3 Kankin - is not the end of creation but simply the end of a "Long Count" calandar cycle and the beginning of a new calandar cycle, would you accept the fact that there is nothing mystical about that date?

Maybe you didn't hear, but the Mayan words under the last date shown on the fabled 'End of the World' calender have finally been translated. After many years of study by a army of Mayan civilization experts they concluded that just below the last date on the calender stone are the Mayan words words:
Continua no outro lado - lanç por favor sobre a pedra.
(Continued on other side - please flip over stone.)

heartcream -> RE: Hopi and Mayan Prophecies (12/8/2008 2:48:20 PM)

It will be intersting if the Mayans do write their book. For me personally having looked into the calendars as much as I have been able to come across, the Mayans have depicted and recorded Rhythms of Time. One calendar depicts a longer period which we are coming out of now and then there is another somewhat shorter one which is the next phase we enter. This information is perhaps not correct and there is likely much more to it, I would love to know what it is all about.

I find all this stuff mystical, it inspires awe in me, feels spiritual, usually transcends human understanding, concerned less with material things.

It would be totally wild to experience a pole shift that takes only 20 or so hours to happen. The thought of it is frightening as well as riveting.

Did they have one that said, "White man come, take over, er - that's it."
If you find one warning people not to buy a betamax I might take them seriously.

That's the problem, Tweed, yes, they did, and for more than one group's first contact with the Conquistadores.  To the day.  How many times can you read, "by coincidence, the Spaniards arrived on the day the locals had assembled to meet their arriving gods," before you figure there might be something at work besides coincidence

It would be a lot easier to disregard the end of a calendar cycle if they hadn't nailed their own demise so accurately.

DomKen -> RE: Hopi and Mayan Prophecies (12/8/2008 7:19:01 PM)

They gathered to meet the arriving gods since the "gods" had been conquering the border towns on the way to the capital and showing off magic, i.e. guns, along the way. And there was no fulfilled prophecy indicating they were due to be conquered.

The long count calendar was just one of several different calendar systems the Maya used for measuring time for various purposes. The long copunt isn't even the one that measures time farthest into the future. It is simply the one most commonly seen when dealing with dates into the future at the time of writing. The long count doesn't even end in a couple of years but simply adds a digit much like western calendars did on Dec 31, 999.

The entire industry of making a big deal of the long count calendar is the creation of a couple of new age types who have gotten very wealthy selling lies to the gullible. Neither of them can even read Mayan and both have been shown repeatedly to have no clue as to how the mayans did math.

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: Hopi and Mayan Prophecies (12/8/2008 7:24:47 PM)

I hope the calendar really is the end. (not really, but in a way it would be kind of entertaining to see)

heartcream -> RE: Hopi and Mayan Prophecies (12/8/2008 8:19:28 PM)

I dont believe the 'end of world' is going to be the planet blowing up. I did think that for many years but now I dont think it will play out like that in the end.

Apparently the Mayans used a base 20 system 10 fingers and 10 toes ("A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya", Linda Schiel and David Freidel, 1990 William Morrow and Co., NY, NY pg. 78). The Mayan conception of time is not the Western conception of time. (I think this interesting enough to require a separate thread).

Actually they used a base 20 math and a base 12 math as well as possibly some other bases. We have trouble making sense of a lot of their inscriptions.

They used a relative calendar based on the crowning of th elocal monarch which was fine for recording most dates in the short term. They then used an absolute calendar for calculating when to hold festivals and ceremonies related to specific astronomical events. The long count calendar was a much longer ranged calendar used primarily for stuff like comet appearances and the like. The even longer ranged calendar is used so rarely it is hard to figure what it was used for.

*the moral of the story is never take a job writing date conversion software for an archaeologist.

Isn't there also a timeline upon the pharoah's chamber walls.
What of the Revelations? (Not a christian, but girl has read it plus a few other religious texts, esoteric and occultic sources over the years)
It might be interesting to know that if take a look at the latest pictures of depth sounding, there is a portion of antarctica that matches the description given by plato. It is my own personal theory that there was a continental slide along the crust that placed antarctica where it is now. But that is just my own theory.

But given the hopi and mayan prophecies, what could change the world as we know it over a period of 3 days?

TNstepsout -> RE: Hopi and Mayan Prophecies (12/9/2008 5:18:30 AM)

While I don't believe the end date means the end of the world, I do believe it is cosmically significant. The ancient people had a very good understanding of the cycles of the solar system and believed that when there was convergence there was a special kind of sacred harmony and that these times were special. To ancient people, mathmatics, geometry, sound, time and space were all aspects of the same thing. They were ways to measure the divine order of things.  The Myans did far more than count on their fingers and toes to come up with their calendar. It displays knowledge of the earths wobble. It takes roughly 26,000 years for the earth to return to the exact same position in relation to the constellations.  The coming "end date" is one of those times and it appears it will also correspond to another important alignment within the Milky Way itself.

"On this day a rare astronomical and Mayan mythical event occurs. In astronomic terms, the Sun conjuncts the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. The Milky Way, as most of us know, extends in a general north-south direction in the night sky. The plane of the ecliptic is the track the Sun, Moon, planets and stars appear to travel in the sky, from east to west. It intersects the Milky Way at a 60 degree angle near the constellation Sagittarius. "

Here's a link to a pretty good explanation of what I'm talking about (just ignore the mumbo jumbo- the explanation is good).  http://www.crawford2000.co.uk/maya.htm

It really is quite fascinating. We have come to see calendars as little more than a way to keep up with the passage of time, remember birthdays and paydays, but to ancient priests there was a significant divine order in understanding the cycles within cycles within cycles. They really did see a bigger picture.

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: Hopi and Mayan Prophecies (12/9/2008 6:57:54 AM)

Yeah, I've read this too. The Mayans were an amazing people really. We would know 1000 times more about them if the missionaries hadn't have burned the codex's because their "satantic" content. But yeah, the Sun aligns with the Mayan underworld then, and it happened to happen in 2012. Pretty cool if you ask me. And the Mayans never saw the ships, the conquistadors came over land from Mexico and it took them almost 100 years to bring them under the Spanish yoke.
