People fall into the trap of thinking they are sherlock holmes and that they can tell everything about someone from a single sentence or statement.
Hmm.  I believe you typed that with your left hand.  While wearing a trilby and listening to Mozart.

Sonata, concerto or symphony?

[Come on...it's so obvious!]

I am always passionate in my beliefs..even if trivial...and in the heat of the argument I usually will not admit defeat..BUT ...after the heat of battle dissipates I often learn things from others and appreciate their reasoning.

I never hold grudges..in fact those I argue with I often like best...sorta like a knock down drag out fight that ends in shaking hands.

kd, that is exactly what I was talking about. You equate being convinced that you were wrong with defeat.

With this newly described "insecurity", which is actually simply a combination of normal human traits, people seem to think that if they get convinced that they were wrong there is a crowd of people in Heaven or something all pointing their fingers chanting WRONG WRONG WRONG !.

I'll tell y'all this much, if you really truly convince me that I am wrong I will thank you. This happens rarely because of course I'm so perfect, and I will admit to a bit of hard headedness on certain issues, but I would thank you because if I was wrong, and I know I was wrong, and I know I am right now, I have just gotten a little bit smarter then haven't I ? Wait till the next guy comes along :-)

I just took the civics test HK brought in, and on one question I disagree with the correct answer. Well the answer "they" think is correct. So who are they ? Are they the college educators that scored thirty points lower than me ? Perhaps.

The way I see it, if two people are in an argument in a public thread, if in two posts at least some things are not agreed upon, it is a waste of time and electrons. Sometimes you just agree to disagree because what one considers proof, another may consider post hoc ergo proper hoc. If that is the case, even with all facts in hand, the two are very unlikely to ever agree completely.

People who realize that rarely become an annoyance.

There is an incredibly diverse range of people on this board.  Inevitably, friction occurs and factions form.  Usually this friction dissipates because the reasons were unfounded and it soon becomes clear that no slight was intended.

But I've noticed lingering resentments - so lasting that the origins are probably lost from memory.  I can't stop wondering why that is.  One of the reasons I am here is to have my thoughts and perceptions tested and to test those of others.

Have you noticed trivial disagreements become mini-vendettas?  Or certain posters who disagree with others, no matter if doing so contradicts their own views?  As a group, are we too insecure to have a debate?

Indeed we do have members here who readily resort to throwing insulting labels at others often - and then try to propose that the response to such tactics is evidence of some defect in the correspondent, and argue that no slight was intended when other motives remain remarkably unclear (other than to tip the discussion away from the subject matter and close down the debate perhaps) leaving very much the impression that slight must have been intended.

And when such members repeat this same behaviour over and over, presumably with their own ends in mind for such, it does often occur that they view their continuation of these tactics and the further responses to them as evidence of a lingering resentment with origins lost in the past.

And it also happens that such members come to wonder at it all and to hold that they wish only to be engaged in a reasoned debate that tests their thoughts and perceptions, when in the instance of such tests being presented they resort to such insults and labels and even to refusing to acknowledge the value of any argument presented by way of such tests, especially when said tests are sustained by independent sources of evidence, and further throwing more insults to suggest that the poster of such testing arguments lacks reason by way of failure to concur with such members.

Luckily there are only a very limited number of such members who participate here in such a manner; generally they are members with enormous investment in certain political and sometimes religious ideologies which is perfectly fine in itself. Where it crosses the line is in its tendency to encourage the use of such tactics when the ideology is challenged, indeed at times even when there is the faintest suggestion of such a challenge.

We have only to look back on the many threads regarding the election in the US and particularly as they relate to Obama and the insulting allegations regarding him and his ideas and his supporters to see evidence of all of the above.

Just a play with words...I have on more than one occasion acknowledged a mistake in my reasoning...I do thank them especially if the correction was delivered with grace...if not I still acknowledge them but I don't have to like the delivery.

Agreed kd, and when you are right it is not nice to gloat or brag. You must have been right sometime :-)

The Net is a means of communication that makes complete strangers interract with each other with no prior introductions. As in real life, people feel a guttural like and dislike of others...

With me, it's happened a few times that some of the people I initially butted heads with turned out to be great online friends... but they are few and far between. Most of the time, my gut instinct turned out to be correct for me.

In the end, one has to remain polite, even when one is confronted to people whose view of life makes them come across as insane fascists. And that's no small feat  .

Eh, I realize I am stubborn, and that people are not wont to change in the fundamentals of their beliefs. So when someone outs themselves as holding several views of the world that fundamentally contradicts mine, I'll just put them on ignore rather than engage. I've done that dance enough to know that it almost never ends well.

Yes, and I think it's pathetic, but by the same token I'd be very disappointed in myself if I didn't inspire anyone to become obsessed with me.

How did you know I'm an Aries?

And that description pretty much fits me to a T.  Creepy.
