Minimum of 6 years before he is eligibile for parole

Can someone please tell me why the Goldman's were present? Their presence does nothing but taint today's sentencing with questions on whether there was retribution over the acquittal of 13 years ago.

Seriously, this is what is wrong with the people running our judicial system. They can't do anything anymore without tainting the process and creating the doubt integral to an appeal.

Public trial, public sentencing. I doubt anyone had anything to do with the Goldman's being there except the Goldman's themselves.

Considering the number of goofball OJ fans living on the courthouse steps, the courtroom would have been filled before the Goldman's plane ever landed in Vegas. They got in with help. They were special guests of someone or some legal entity. They weren't "the public".

I'd say they were probably there to thumb their noses and royally flip him off, if even in spirit.

You don't know that. You have no idea how long they have been in Vegas. What ever there reasons, they are free to do as they wish.

As for the trail,getting appealed, when he was found guilty, there where several lawyers on the news saying they could not see any reason to allow an appeal, the rule of law was followed every step of the way. I'm sure they will try though

If you listen to the tapes played in court, OJ hangs himself ordering people around and saying not to allow anyone out of the room. OJ just thought he was above the law and now he learned he is not.

they are indeed members of the "public" no matter who it is that may have paid for the trip there(which I don't see any mention of in the articles) I am sure their motivation is as you say but, the fault is not the courts. I am certain no one connected to the court is paying for them to be there.

Given that the Goldmans attempted to inject themselves into the actual trial proceedings, their presence arguably could be used to support an argument that the case was not decided on the merits, but on external influences.

The Goldmans would be well advised to stay away from any courtroom containing OJ Simpson. No disrespect to the grief they are feeling over the brutal slaying of their son, but not all of OJ's misdeeds involve them.

Im not saying they weren't free to do so, but it was incredibly stupid for them to do so. Their presence does nothing but create doubt about the legitimacy of the sentence. If you are a smart prosecutor, you don't want them within 2000 miles of the place, because if they are, it has the potential to queer the impartiality of the sentence. They are chronically trying to use their celebrity to get the legal outcome they desire, and to me thats not "justice".

It shows, to me, that the Goldmans arent standing up for Ron and doing whats right (by their own actions) to get the best possible outcome, but its all about themselves now. Its all about Fred Goldman now, and that next book yet to be written.

they make it worse if they were there.

I don't disagree with what you say as to there motives, but, the idea that it is related to the judicial system I think is incorrect. I was in Vegas when the verdict came in and, no uproar, no riots etc. OJ's time has passed as has the Goldman's. Not usre which one is the larger publicity slut.

That is like saying, the press should not mention the murder trail when talking about OJ and this case.

They arrived for the sentencing, the trial was over since OCT, how can they influence the trial and I'm sure the judge had made up her mind about the sentence long before seeing the Goldmans in the court room.

Perhaps OJ is just guilty and that is all there is to it. I'm sure they will use the poor little old me, I'm to famous to get a fair trial, so let me free.

I was in Vegas when his trial ended and every station had on lawyers who could not find a basis for an appeal, his being famous has nothign to do with an appeal.

They stated that the rule of law was followed and the worst evidence was the videos and tapes played in court, not the Goldmans showing up for the sentencng

Im not talking about appealing the verdict. Im talking about appealing the duration of the sentence. Two different things.

The presence of the Goldmans only adds to the emotions that create the doubt over whether the duration was appropriate.

It was a violent act with a weapon and kidnapping, the chance he has at an appeal is if they can show his sentence is worse than others with the same charges, he could have gotten life and the DA wanted 18 year min. So he got less than what the DA wanted and a lot less than what he could have received.

I don't think it is to harsh, he broke into someones room with a weapon trying to take the law into his own hands, if you or I did that, me thinks we would get more than 15 years with a chance at parole in 6

The judge wrote out the sentencing order before court today, so she did not know the Goldmans would be present. It looks bad in the press agreed, but it has nothing to do with the sentence

Nobody's debating the crime or the verdict, so lets move beyond that and stop recycling such points.

Doesnt matter.

All the defense needs is a nugget of perceived impartiality to form an appeal on. The presence of the Goldman's delivered truckloads of nuggets. They put their own celebrity ahead of doing what was necessary to make the sentencing appeal proof.

I never said they would not appeal, though I doubt very much they will get a ruling in their favor. Nugget or not, his sentence is not overtly harsh

Besides, he will just get in line for a pardon from Bush anyway

In my opinion O.J. Simpson was sentenced for murder he commited 13 years ago. Las Vegas incident should have been misdemenour: there was no seriouus harm done (a few crooks were held for questioning in the hotelroom), nobody was actually kidnapped. Is it the way court system should work?

Having watched a bit of the judge in that trial....the idea of an appeal getting very far seems a bit slim. She appeared unbelievably thorough and suffered no foolishness. Appealing because you find the verdict incorrect without procedural errors will normally just kill the appeal.

Fortunately, neither O.J., nor you, nor anyone else without legal arrest authority can hold anyone for questioning. That's called kidnapping by legal definition.
