I wonder how many ships will dock on the West coast from China this month?

Fewer and fewer Popeye as the months go by - if people dont have the income to buy it, it wont be brought in - which means lay offs at the ports, railways and in trucking etc, reduced insurance business and banking business etc; its a vicious circle.

But at least you have a reasonably strong currency; for us the threat as GBP sinks is that we wont be able to import anything at all, including the food imports we're reliant on, because no one will want to be paid for their goods in GBP and acquiring enough Euros or USD to buy the stuff will be impossible.

Its hard to get a job even with a college degree in supposedly something that has value such as microbiology. I was interviewing for a job recently, and the guy told me the position is a year, possible more depending on if he can get the funding. For years funding for scientific research has been decreasing.. so thus.. the funding isnt there, the jobs arnt there.. the whole system is wonky.

This is a very good point, Araven.
Many of the "clueless" don't realize that those with college
degree's and white collar workers are also being affected.
UNLESS you get a job in a critical need area, you will be standing in line
next to the blue collar workers.
You hit the nail on the clue by 4, the jobs for both white and blue collar workers,
are not there.
Now time for some jokes.

Full of toxic junk made by people making $3 a day.
When you lay off 100,000 blue collar workers you also lay off about 35,000 white collar workers.
And all the ancillary workers who support those people.
Hopefully P.E. Obama will be getting us out of all those "free trade" deals and "outsourcing" of jobs!
In my opinion it is very obvious now for everyone to see that all those things are a recipe for disaster.
It is getting increasingly difficult to defend "outsourcing" and "free trade" anymore.

Popeye? WHO is defending this outsourcing and free trade CRAP these days?
Those guys are hiding in their corners planning their next bailouts from the government that

they claim to hate!
Come on now.

America has been sold down the fucking river, Michael Moore sounds better each day.
The "sheep/followers" let this happen and even now are just sitting and watching the boat
sink.
The thing is Popeye, I was mad in the fucking 80s when this "free trade" was so popular.
I knew this shit would happen 25 years ago, now the chickens are coming home to roost.
"Free trade"?  "Outsourcing of America" "Lights on People/wake up calls!"

Gee none of that was brought up in the debates either when NAFTA was introduced it was doomsday for the American worker who did actually take Pride in what he did some of us still have that Pride and spirit though

I do take this kind of comment personally.  OF COURSE there is no (legal) job that I or most folks would not take to keep afloat.  Did you see my comment about collecting bottles?  Do you REALLY think that a part time job at the Wal Mart is going to replace a full time job elsewhere?  Presuming, of course, that a white collar worker could even get that Walmart job.  We are "overqualified", after all.

Mia, yes, and this was just another of the things that Pat Buchanan warned us about many years ago.

533,000 jobs gone in one month; depression rather than recession was used on the news here tonight as well

Humm, the thing is painpup, I personally have a job.
THIS post is about the maybe close to 2 million people that are or will

be soon unemployed.

If you think, we don't have a serious situation that is your right.
I think we are in BIG trouble.
I guess I took it "personal" when you responded with your comments about "The sky is falling."
That normally to me is a nasty little way of attempting to minimize what I am saying.
Again, I am entitled to MY beliefs and you are entitled to YOUR beliefs.
As far as I am concerned we are headed for the next Depression, it is not pretty, and for many people "their sky IS falling", dude.

Mia, I doubt that, unemployment was at what, 33% in 1932?
Where are we now 7, 8%?
The stock market "should" have been down today but it went up. Stocks are incredably cheap after being pounded into the ground for the last year!
Some of them are now yeilding 20-25%!
Try getting that in a bank.

Tell it, brother! I've been on a buying spree these last couple of weeks. Bought several thousand shares of various stocks this past week - mostly loading up on blue-chippers (3M, Illinois Tool Works, Johnson & Johnson, Coca Cola), but also rounding out the portfolio with some smaller companies that seem to have good futures. Most of them are energy-related issues (Boots and Scoots, for example), because they've just been beaten to a pulp these past few months. By the way, thanks for the tip on NAT; I bought a few hundred shares at 24 bucks a couple of weeks ago, and will probably scoop up a few hundred more next time it dips below 30. If it hadn't been for you mentioning it, I don't know if I would have ever even heard of it. I owe you a beer if you ever get out this way.

But anyway, yeah, I think it's time to buy. My gut tells me we're bottoming right now. I think it'll be a long bottoming process, with a lot of alarming bearish plunges between the bullish rallies, but when you consider that almost every day this week we've had economic reports ranging from extremely bad to utterly horrible, and yet the Dow has bounced back to close strong almost every one of those days, I think the market's reached a point where it just refuses to be beaten down any further. I think we're at the point of final capitulation, and there's a lot of money waiting just outside the door for some sign that it's safe to come pouring back in. I'm going to put about 10,000 each into a couple of mutual funds on Monday, and continue to watch for the bearish days to expand my positions in the stocks I like. Yeah, unemployment and other lagging indicators will continue to struggle for many months (maybe another year or more), but the stock market is ready to lead the charge, and I think it's time for us investors to hop back on board.

Back to the OP, which is about all the layoffs this year.

Front page news today, states that economists are SHOCKED at

all the layoffs.
Hummm, maybe I should become an economist, you don't need a crystal ball
to see what is going on.

"SHOCKED" eh?
Back in 1974 it was 650,000 a month not the 533,000 of today.

Popeye, this proves you don't read the links I post.
This shit is JUST beginning, there will probably be  WELL over 1 million
people out of work soon.
There will be close to 1 million people soon laid off.
We are no where near the bottom yet.
Let me go find my clue box so I can pass out clues to the clueless.
