MzMia -> Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/4/2008 6:39:39 PM)

AT&T and DuPont will soon be slashing 14,500 jobs.
Adobe, Houghton Miffin and NBC Universal announced
announced they will be laying off more than 1,000 people.

Layoffs this year have been over 1 million in the United States.
I had no idea that there had been this many layoffs.
I wonder where these 1 million plus people will be working.
Buddy, can you spare a job?

Some of us aren't working.  I'm hoping I can get a job as a hotel desk clerk, a receptionist, anything.

I was working as an extra on a TV show but the TV show has wrapped filming.

There are many more who will be affected by these layoffs, primarily in service jobs like pet groomers, hair stylists, and the like, as well as retail jobs.

Anyone whose livelihood relies on discretionary spending is gonna be hurtin'.

Viva Capitalismo!!! [/sarcasm]

I agree, you forgot restaurants, travel agents, those that work in the spa industry,
as well as many small business owners.
It is the ripple effect that many people don't see coming.

OH, MzMia, surely you remember that other thread on jobs?  We should all be out cleaning windows and collecting empty bottles!  It's ALL  OUR FAULT that we don't have a year's salary saved up, and can't just walk away from our lives in search of greener pastures.

Yes, I know I sound unduly sarcastic, but seriously, where have you all been?

Aww Hib, interesting point!
I was listening to a Senator on t.v. talk about how easily the "bailouts" were given to the banks,

with few questions asked.
Yet, the auto makers, have to beg, give all sorts of plans, etc.
The Senator said it was clearly because the bankers were white collar, and of couse we must
bailout the stock market, banks, AIG, etc.
We are ALL going to be affected, in one way or another.
Even those of us that don't lose are jobs, are going to be affected because we will surely end up
supporting many of the 1 million that have lost their jobs.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/4/2008 8:17:43 PM)

It's wayyyy more than one million!!  And what about the executives and the MILLIONS of dollars that they get?  That could pay for an awful lot of expenses!

The funny thing is Hib.
I have been talking about the coming Depression for at least 6 months.
Many think I am being "depressing", but shit if I think my country is headed
for a damn depression, how can I not care?
Don't think about it, don't talk about it, the sun will come out tomorrow.
Maybe it will just go away!
lol

Aren't we all fucking effected?
Why are so many asleep at the damn wheel, many will be waking up soon.

Many will be scratching their heads and saying "What happened"?

NormalOutside -> RE: Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/4/2008 8:25:37 PM)

I heard that it was one million as of September or so, but that it was expected to be another .3 million per month for the last quarter, so I wouldn't be surprised if the total ended up being nearly 2 million jobs lost in 2008.  And of course, 2009 isn't looking very rosy, as we haven't even officially hit depression status yet.  And to think, it could go for years and years.  Eeeesh.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/4/2008 8:30:40 PM)

We have known that the country is in a depression for ages here in Michigan, MzMia!  We are nearly tops in the country for repos, foreclosures, job losses, business closings...  Those that are young enough to leave, are doing so, but nowhere is safe, really.  I have a job, but I need a better one, and what are my chances? It's not a matter of having disposable income, it's a matter of surviving.

Years ago when I was in college the first time, they were talking about how we were moving to a service economy in America, and most people were going to be processing dry cleaning and flipping burgers.  I believed it back then, and I believe it now!  Whenever I see some family with a passel of kids, I think WTF?  What are those kids going to do for a living?

I agree Hib, Michigan has been hit hard and has been
on the front line of the crumbling economy.

Sad thing is, many don't care until the ball is rolling in front of them.
The ball is rolling in front of many people these days, so more people can relate.

I thought it was fucked up when all the big companies took most of the manufacturing
jobs overseas in the 80s.
So they could save money, and pay people $5 a day to work like slaves and live in shacks.
Now we our a nation of consumers that don't hardly produce a damn thing.
We will all soon be paying the price of the greedy bastards, Capitalism and the global economy.
Hey! Its not working so well these days, folks.

This is a good article, what gets me is it does not matter how bad things are getting,
we can't call it a Recession soon to be Depression, until the government tells us!
The following article is great! A must read for those that are not afraid to read what is likely
coming our way!

I have heard the sky is falling crap so much, it bores me.
I am doing a great service, by starting threads like this.
I have a right to talk about the crumbling economy, and I am hardly wringing
my hands.

blah, blah, blah...can't hear you.

Its hard to get a job even with a college degree in supposedly something that has value such as microbiology. I was interviewing for a job recently, and the guy told me the position is a year, possible more depending on if he can get the funding. For years funding for scientific research has been decreasing.. so thus.. the funding isnt there, the jobs arnt there.. the whole system is wonky.

I wonder how many ships will dock on the West coast from China this month?
Full of toxic junk made by people making $3 a day.
When you lay off 100,000 blue collar workers you also lay off about 35,000 white collar workers.
And all the ancillary workers who support those people.
Hopefully P.E. Obama will be getting us out of all those "free trade" deals and "outsourcing" of jobs!
In my opinion it is very obvious now for everyone to see that all those things are a recipe for disaster.
It is getting increasingly difficult to defend "outsourcing" and "free trade" anymore.

moonvine -> RE: Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/4/2008 11:27:45 PM)

I had money saved, then I had one disaster after another after another.  Now I am without health insurance, as well as being without a job,  and if I get seriously ill will likely have to declare bankruptcy.  Actually a serious illness could bankrupt anyone short of Bill Gates and the like.

BbwCanaDomme -> RE: Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/5/2008 12:18:05 AM)

I have some friends who work at one of the AT&T call centers here (just a heads up, if you talk to someone who claims to be in Western Washington, you're actually talking to a Canadian haha, I worked there in high school and the first thing they told us was never to admit to being Canadian. If they have you figured out respond with "I was born in Canada but am currently located in Western Washington." I always thought that was funny), and apparently they're expanding. So yay us! Also, as long as NBC keeps the shitty, terrible, unbearable show Knight Rider going, I'll be happy. It's pretty much the only network show shooting up here now.

moonvine -> RE: Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/5/2008 12:20:08 AM)

Yes, very common to be told to lie to the customer in call centers or risk losing your job, I worked in one for 8.5 years.

It's like being chased by a wolfpack and you can't stop for even a second to catch your breath.

It only takes one or two unexpected expenses to leave one pretty much fucked. For me, it was surgery for a detached retina + having to replace the furnace and AC on a rental I have + having to put a rebuilt transmission into my car. Now I need a furnace for MY house, and I'll have to go the Home Depot 12 months same as cash route. Plus I'm fighting a bad case of cellulitis in my left leg; might end up with only 4 toes on that foot.

It never ends.

Vendaval -> RE: Buddy can you spare a job? 1 million layoffs this year (12/5/2008 12:58:05 AM)

Don't worry, all the laid off workers can have jobs at Wal-Mart and McDonalds.  They can still pay their mortgages and car loans and private insurance that way, right? (sarcasm people, sarcasm)
