It's a common refrain on this board that UK politicians are out of touch with the electorate. I'd be surprised if any mainstream politico weren't fairly out of touch - that's sort of the point. But I haven't noticed any of our born-again civil libertarians touching on the fact that a very significant part of Labour's plans has been put firmly on the back boiler: the Queen made no mention of the Communication Data Bill, which would have opened the way for the Govt to snoop on all our emails and telephone conversations to an unprecedented degree. Amid all the silly fuss they make about Damian Green and the Tories' plainly dishonest manoueverings to secure sensitive information, haven't they missed something? Who's really out of touch here? Historic fourth Labour term, here we come!

How can it be even "sort of the point" for our elected representatives to be out of touch with the electorate? Is this the same "out of touch" by which one might hear, (as one is feeding the draught horses after another day of ploughing), that "tractor production is up comrades"? E

They likely ALREADY do so. Think "new world order". There is no such thing as terrorism. Such is simply an angry mob of people whose money was swindled. Nothing more.

I have nothing to say as to the politics of Britain, I am not that well aware of them but, watched the ceremony before the speech as I was toiling on an eliptical machine at the gym. I had watched a PBS special on the Queen and it explained all of the ceremony to me just a few nights ago. I have no idea of the effectiveness of the British system but, the tradition is marvelous to someone unaccustomed to it all.

Madge has never uttered point by point all intended new law. The vast amount of it is always in constant adjustment anyway. She helps to symbolise the independence of government from crown (Black Rod) and announces the more popular policies.

Labour and a forth term seems fanciful thinking to me. You are correct that the Tories have made a big fuss of the Damien Green issue, but it doesnt alter the fact that Labour are using the police for political purposes. All Brown has done is shelve policies that may halt him getting elected. I think he is too late for that though, his time is up.

I would have considered it fanciful, too, a few months ago. I thought that the bounce after the credit crisis would lead to Brown effecting a fair patch-up of the economy, only to lose the subsequent election to the Tories. But watching closely since then, it seems pretty clear that the Tories lack vision and still will come the election - because they really are lightweights. I mean, what is there to actually vote for?

I too am deeply cynical, but thats not to say I shall tolerate anything less than the very best out of those elected and invited to form a government.
