Being open to the fresh, the new, the exciting is, I believe, a form of status quo. It is an existing state of affairs that is constantly shifting and changing, often in very subtle ways, sometimes in very big ways.

this is an interesting point and I think there is some truth to it.  As the saying goes in my business world "the only constant is change".  Constant being to me a similar term for Status quo.

Are you the person the drives to same route home from work everyday or do you take a different route often just because you can?

If you have to take a different route to see something new, then I propose that you aren't paying attention to the small things around you. I see something new using the same road I always take. Are the tulips in that neighbor's front garden past their prime? Have they removed the pumpkin and put up a fake reindeer? Is there a real deer watching the plastic one? And why is it the only person around here who hasn't yet spotted the 14 pointer me?

If you pay closer attention you won't need to make enormous changes just to feel a slight change. The world changes around us everyday. But you can just as well smell the roses in your garden as need to drive to a nursery to smell theirs.

Maybe the difference here is not between change and status quo but between adrenaline junkies and non? A small change for me is felt strongly. Perhaps those of you who constantly need something new and different simply don't feel the intensity of small changes and need much higher rates of adrenaline?

but it is kind of exciting to even discuss some things.

Nods.. I agree.  We three have a tendency to have discussions when soaking in the Hot tub together.  Relaxed and throwning out ideas or opinions on a variety of things.

Ha, although I see CE often and live pretty close to her, most of our discussions take place on a keyboard. You really know how to hurt a guy with this hot tub idea with your girls.

I certainly cannot speak for everyone but I know I am not at all an adrenaline junkie. I am just inquisitive and like to explore.

I don't pay any attention to what the human neighbours are doing but I would definately notice a 14 point buck!

I don't see why status quo and new and exciting can't coexist.  Just because there is stability doesn't mean there are new things to learn, or new adventures to be had.   No matter how much I do in this lifetime, or how many places I go, I'll never do everything or go everywhere.  There will always be new things to try, knowledge to gain, and memories to create.  Yet the things I've already done, continue to do, and memories that I have also make up a part of Me.

I think a lot of it is about perspective.  How are you seeing what is in front of you?  Very rarely is any event in life exactly the same way twice.  Even the things we do every day.  It only becomes routine if you let it.  Why not have the excitement of the new with the stability of the familiar?

I'd probably notice that. But beware.....first shotgun season opens this weekend!

Dammit, I had to go and remind myself........it's going to sound like WW3 in my neighbourhood Saturday morning.

Hey!!  Now don't be getting me in trouble... I can do that all on my own, thank you very much.  I was merely pointing out that anything that would be mounted must have a nice rack.

I am an adrenaline junkie.  That doesn't mean I am in a constant state of change or searching for it.  It does mean that I enjoy a challenge, a new experience, learning something new or shaking things up a bit once in a while.

Now, about this other discussion going on here.  Mounting KoM or LaT, depending on which one has the nicer rack...hmmm, yep that'll get my adrenaline flowing.

Do we have to have change and growth to have fresh and exciting?

Nope.  Too much change, particularly external change, gets boring and stale.    Seriously.  It overwhelms the senses and our ability to cope with different situations.  Additionally, it forces us to concentrate on the surface of things rather than exploring the depths.  Its like the idea of having a new partner every couple of months.  Some imagine that that would be the epitome of exciting but I'm guessing that eventually those partners would all meld into one, and it'd be impossible to differentiate between them.  It'd start feeling old.

Too much internal change, on the other hand, implies a lack of character or a fatal restlessness.  If someone lacks any consistency in their approach to life, its impossible to get to know them.  It would be hard to have any kind of meaningful relationship with such a person, let alone a relationship in which I would be trying to submit.  Learning them would be impossible, and they'd be like a different person every day.  (There is a philosophy of D/s which states that the power exchange is enhanced if the s is kept off balance.  Personally, I think that's bullshit.)

I think we need stability in order to grow.  Its like planting a seed.  If you dig that seed up every day, and plant it in fresh soil, chances are, that seed is never going to sprout.  Once the seed is planted, its best to keep it planted!  (This seems really profound as I'm sitting here in the early am, but I got that first cup of coffee buzz goin' on)  Growth is culmulative.  I think the tendency to equate change and growth is a mistaken one.  Not all change involves growth.  Some change destroys the possibility of growth.  Death itself involves a drastic change in an organism.

quote:

Are there areas that you seek to facilate change and growth and other areas that you seek to maintain a status quo? what are they.
Why do you choose these approaches?  Why is one way better for you than others?

Sir's and my relationship is a new one.  We haven't fully defined it except to say that its some brand of D/s.  It will evolve as we find what works for us and what doesn't.   We decided to take this approach from the time I moved into his house for a variety of reasons.  In my mind, the biggest reason is the fact that there are so many contingencies we have to deal with.

I'm not big on chasing change and growth and excitement for its own sake.  Life tends to hand that shit to me and it'd be foolhardy for me to go looking for it.  I like things old and comfortable, like a well worn shoe.  So, I wouldn't go out of my way seeking to facilitate change and growth.  I've had way too much instability in my life to be enamoured with the idea of change for its own sake.  Boring is just fine with me.

quote:

In particular with BDSM and Power Dynamics, what things you seek to maintain as a status quo and what things do you seek to change and grow with?

But, if somethings not working right, I'm a big believer in confronting the situation and changing to get things running smoothly.  So, in that case, I'd be like, yo, Sir, we gotta do something here.  You could say my approach is pragmatic.  If it ain't broke leave it alone.  I'm more likely to want to do the change and grow thing if it pleases Sir, and if it enhances our power exchange.  So, even if something was working for me, but he said he wanted to change it, I'd be ok with trying after I got over my initial resistence.  (Change is something that is best resisted!!!  The only thing worse than the way things are is change! --one of my favorite quotable quotes.)

One of those questions have had me thinking...  "What sort of things do you do to keep the BDSM component of your relationship fresh and exciting?"

I don't.  I don't pursue a relationship in order to be entertained... it doesn't constantly need to be "fresh and exciting"... like others what I want from a relationship is stability and reliability... I want status quo.  What changing and growing that occurs is usually in order to maintain the status quo, that growth is usually in response to changes brought about by Life.

As LA put it...
quote:

ORIGINAL: LuckyAlbatross

I'm still young, but I've found life offers unending opportunities for change and newness all on its own.  I don't have to DO anything, I just have to BE aware and make choices on what's offered.

Life itself offers plenty of new opportunities and brings about quite a lot of change.  I stay busy just responding and adapting to those changes, growing and adapting to that.

When I browse profiles, one thing I avoid is any profile that seems too focused on fetish play, on fantasies, or in other words... people who want to be entertained by a thrilling experience.  You can't build a relationship on those things, relationships need stability, they need commitment, they need status quo.

So no... "fresh and exciting" isn't a goal on the agenda... life tends to take care of that for me.
